Since the holidays are nearing and many objects, foods, plants, et cetera are entering your household along with various people who might not be aware of things that would endanger the health of your Greyhound, we urge you to read up on things that may be a hazard to them and warn your family and friends. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center provides a hotline should your dog(s) become poisoned at anytime. Remember, many things that -seem- harmless can turn into a disaster!

Please, help to keep the holiday season merry, bright, and without tragedy for your pets!

A Greyhound's Christmas Wish

Dear Santa to you I make my wish,
This could be my very last Christmas list.
No time to be frivolous, I must hurry you see,
I'm no longer the best, they no longer want me.
I've heard of places where there are soft beds,
Sofas and pillows to lay your head,
Plenty of food and toys for play,
People who hug you night and day.
I've heard of the warmth the hugs can bring,
And car rides to get you wonderful things,
Large spaces to roam when you feel the need,
A place they will love me for being just me.
My wish, Dear Santa, I clearly state,
My hope as I sit closed tight in this crate,
To ask for myself I know is not right,
But please bring a family to love me tonight.

REMINDER:

This Tuesday, October 24, is the Halloween Parade in Johnstown. The Halloween Parade in Johnstown is a VERY big event. It is televized live on WJAC-TV Channel 6. Once again, we’ll be participating with Nittany Greyhounds in the parade – this makes for a wonderful showing of greys. We'll be in the first division, as usual, so that we don't have to wait or be delayed with the hounds. This also insures us of getting some air time!

For more information and directions to where we're meeting and what time to be there (I believe we should get there by 6), email Kay at houndmom@aasdcat.com.

The event at Dewey Beach was a success for Monica's Heart. We raised lots of money selling our merchandise at the tent for the group! I believe the final total was over $2000.00!!

Also, note that all the adoption reps and normal MH contacts are back home now. You no longer need to contact the "while in Dewey" people if you have a question or emergency.

Thepoop.com (Don't judge it by it's name! It's a dog site!) is having a "Howloween" contest. So, if you like to dress up your hounds (or yourselves with your hounds!), dress up, snap a picture, and send it in! They're giving away some "greyt" prizes!

Monica's Heart "while in Dewey" contacts update:

If you run into any problems while the greyhound reps from Monica's Heart are in Dewey Beach, please contact Joan Ebersole or Joel Varchol since Kay, Judy, and Gale (once again) will be attending the event and will not be available.

For the Johnstown area: Joel Varchol will be looking after Gale's fosters. So an update on the phone numbers during Dewey Weekend is as follows: Gale's home phone: 814-255-4013 (Joel will be there part of the time doing foster stuff). Joel Varchol phone number: 814-255-4173

For the Altoona area: Kennel Director Joan Ebersole will be at home – if you have an emergency (lost/found grey), call Joan at 814-695-1121.

Remember, as always, if you have a medical emergency, CALL YOUR VET! Don’t call us and waste precious time waiting for messages to be returned. If you have doubts as to “why your dog is acting that way,” WE would probably have those doubts, TOO. Also, everyone should have ID tags on their greys with their OWN information (name, phone number) IN ADDITION to the Monica’s Heart tag. That way, a lost dog can be returned home much more quickly!

There's a wonderful article about the Greyhounds Reach the Beach celebration in Dewey Beach in the online edition of the Washington Post. If you'd like to read it, you can check it out at this link.

For those of you attending the Greyhounds Reach the Beach 2000 event in Dewey, DE, you may want to check out the Rehoboth outlets webpage before you go. There's lists of all the shops, discounts, et cetera there. No trip to Dewey Beach would be complete without a stop at the outlets!

We recieved a few pictures of the research dogs, Max and Charley, from the people who did the GUR run for them. Max is the fawnish brindle in the second picture and you can see Charley with his head leaning against the back of the van and Max in the first one. The third is a group shot of the people who did the rescue and the dogs all together.

On Monday, August 14, 2000 we recieved two beautiful male greyhounds (Charley & Max) that were being used for testing pace makers at a research lab. If you'd like to read the story about what happened with these dogs, click here.

It's a real tragedy that this has happened, but we're happy to have saved these two wonderful boys. If you'd like to adopt and/or learn more about Max & Charley, please visit our Petfinder site.
