Upon checking my admission status at a nearby Catholic university I applied to, I was surprised to find that I had not only been accepted, but made a "University Scholar." This is what this title entails:
The University Scholars Program provides enriched courses and seminars as well as special programming for the student of proven ability, broad interest, and enthusiasm. This enhanced intellectual and academic environment offers the University Scholar numerous educational options at each level of his or her course of study.
During the first two years, the University Scholar can select special scholars sections of existing courses that fulfill general education and basic skills requirements. As upperclass students, University Scholars are eligible to enroll in specialized courses and seminars that satisfy their special educational and professional goals.
While Scholars courses are designed to offer superior students a more sophisticated approach to their education, students are not penalized for their academic accomplishments by being held to a more rigid standard than their non-Scholar counterparts. All Scholars offerings receive a special designation on the student's transcript.
In addition, the Scholars Program sponsors a variety of speakers, cultural activities, and special events for students. In particular, the annual Scholars Symposium provides opportunities for students to learn from and interact with distinguished experts and recognized leaders in various academic disciplines.
Benefits and privileges available to University Scholars
Only incoming first-year University Scholars have the right to apply to the University Honors Program.
University Scholars have the privilege of enrolling in Scholars courses and seminars.
Scholars are extended invitations to Scholars Program functions and events including the Scholars Symposium, the Scholars Address, and the Scholars Authors Program.
University Scholars are assured academic scholarships through the University's scholarship selection process if appropriate application materials are submitted on time.
Begun in 1997, the Hull International Fellows Fund was established to foster international learning, leadership, and service among University of Dayton scholars. Scholars who have completed 60 semester hours are eligible to apply for grants ranging from $500 to $7,500 to assist with independent international projects.
In addition, limited funds are available to support Scholars' travel for scholarly research.
Scholars housing is available on a limited basis. In addition, funding is provided to develop and present special residence programming.
The Graduate Guidance Center assists students considering graduate school and students applying for prestigious awards and nationally competitive fellowships.
Hmmm. Interesting. I wonder how much scholarship money they are planning to give me.
