SCD Research Lab Results - Nestle Modulen IBD: Strong 'Avoid'
Nestle has come up with a product for IBD-ers. Unfortunately, it does not appear to be any more than a copy of the already-existing 'liquid nutrition drinks' on the market, and is complely full of sugars which will aggravate the heck out of one's colon. Called Modulen IBD, this product is already being rejected by IBDers everywhere (*including the ones on alt.support.crohns-colitis)! Read the complete lab results.

On a "let's mask the symptoms so the patient will feel better" topic, the effects on pain receptors by chili peppers is under investigation in the UK and in Canada. The goal: a drug to block the pain stimuli. Editor's note: folks, if it hurts, don't eat it!

In his March, 2001 presentation titled "White House Commission on Complementary & Alternative Medicine", Jeffrey S. Bland, PhD, discusses the importance of nutrition (including diet and supplements) and lifestyle in staying healthy. "...Through advances made in understanding the genetic code locked within our 23 pairs of chromosomes, researchers have determined that common age-related diseases are not single-gene diseases and inevitable, but that they are instead controlled by multiple genes on different chromosomes. They are usually not expressed as disease until the person's genes are plunged into a harmful nutritional environment and lifestyle. In a sense, this relates to the concept of "genetic potential through nutrition." Nutrition and micronutrients bathe our genes each day with information from which our phenotypes result..."

According to new research by two independant groups, "Crohn's disease appears to be caused by a mix of both inherited and environmental factors...". These findings concur with the research by Dr. S.V. Haas and Elaine Gottschall implicating microbial growth as a factor in causing Crohn's disease as well as their advocating the Specific Carbohydrate Diet in altering the microbial growth both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Says one new SCD-er:
"Frankly, I am not looking forward to starting this diet and leaving so many of the foods I love behind me. Then again, it seems many of those foods I am so fond of are not so fond of me!"

One reply:
Many people find that the diet is not a diet of deprivation; it is a diet of substitution. For every food that you like that you have to leave behind, you will discover some new food or combination of foods that you never knew existed, and end up liking every bit as much as what you gave up.

In other words: it's easier than it looks.

Welcome.

Erik Freedman in Germany has created a German SCD homepage! It will grow as soon as the German translation of BTVC is available (early Summer, 2001)
Here's the URL: http://www.scdiet.de
Here's the site description (for our German visitors and the Internet search engines):
Diese Internetseiten beschäftigen sich mit der Speziellen Kohlehydratdiät für Crohn und Colitis Patienten (scdiet) und allgemein mit chronisch entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen (CED).
Die Spezielle Kohlehydratdiät hat bereits vielen Crohn- und Colitis Patienten geholfen, ein schon verloren geglaubtes Lebensgefühl wiederzuerlangen.

The following appears in Dr. Mercola's Newsletter:
Complementary Medicine Sought by Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's)

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are more likely to use complementary medicine therapies when they have had the disease for more than 10 years or have been repeatedly hospitalized. The most common reasons for using complementary medicine were the side effects associated with and the lack of effectiveness of conventional medicine. Standard therapies include corticosteroids, which are often accompanied by unwanted side effects, immunosuppressive drugs and/or surgery.

Am J Gastroenterol May 1998;93:697-701.

The following appears boldface in the newsletter: [Dr. Mercola's] COMMENT: Patients are not stupid. They will only tolerate so much abuse by a discipline that is nearly clueless on the cause of most of the problems they treat. Fortunately, there are some very effective alternatives. If you know anyone with inflammatory bowel disease, like Crohn's, the first step is to order the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. It can be ordered from Book People 800-999-4650 #48480. It is the best single book on relieving this problem. One should also use Flora Source as a good bacteria. Most people will also need to be monitored by a gastroenterologist. Fortunately, our state has an excellent one. Dr. Brasco (847-253-6483) has an office in Arlington Heights and is one of the few natural medicine oriented gastroenterologists in the entire country. He is an excellent physician and I have worked with him with a number of patients and found his services to be exceptional. He is familiar with the Gottschall book and uses it in his practice.

A Swedish study concludes: a majority of irritable bowel syndrome patients consider their symptoms to be related to meals. Especially foods rich in carbohydrates and fat cause problems [emphasis added by webmaster]. Nevertheless, the majority of IBS patients are normal or overweight. Female sex and anxiety predict a high degree of food-related symptoms in IBS. Read more >>
