§ Why wait until Saturday? I've hardly been able to write anything these last few days. I've been trying to cope. Tuesday I was in some kind of shock, making futile attempts to comprehend what happened. But it was just too big and evil and wrong. Wednesday morning everything started to sink in, and I just wanted to cry and cry. In fact, I nearly cried a fair few times yesterday. I saw the same images I'd seen over and over since Tuesday, but this time I could actually relate them to the end result: thousands of people killed, thousands of people hurt.
Last night I switched the central heating on because I was cold. But the chill inside is not going to go away that easily. I find myself craving normality, routine, anything that will make this world feel like the world it was before. Because for the last two mornings, I have been waking up in a world that is decidedly uglier than it used to be. I've been waking up with a heavy heart because things have changed forever. What I find hardest to cope with is the fact that someone, somewhere was evil enough to plan such a diabolical act of destruction and pain.
I find myself craving beauty; beautiful music, beautiful art or just the smile of a loved one. Maybe it will let me have a few moments respite from the horrible images that are replaying on continuous loop inside my mind. I'd like to be able to not think about or be aware of what happened for just a few moments. Instead, I deny myself sleep so I can gather more and more news, as if knowing everything will help me understand.
So, how are you dealing with this?

§ I went outside for a break, but as I walked towards the doors leading outside, I was stopped by security. Then I noticed that several policemen with kevlar vests on were frisking a guy right outside the glass doors, while another policeman several feet away pointed a submachine gun at him. We were told to stay in the building. The scene was surreal, like I'd walked into a film set by accident.

§ Yesterday afternoon, our office was evacuated, so I went home and stayed glued to the telly and the net until it was very late. Today everything somehow seems different, more menacing and ugly. I haven't seen a smile so far. My faith in humanity was pretty low as it was, but what happened yesterday pretty much wiped it out completely. That's about all I can write about it for now - I'm still trying to get my head around the magnitude and the the evil of the whole chain of events. I want to recommend
World New York; it has excellent links to things people have written about how they experienced yesterday.

§ How surreal. One or two planes crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York about half an hour ago. There are unconfirmed rumours of a plane hijacking. Just saw some footage on CNN and it looked like something from a film. If this is an act of terrorism (and from the footage I've seen there were 2 planes crashing shortly after another), it's one of the biggest ones yet.
Story on MSNBC.

§ Chess as foreplay? Spice up your chess games with these
erotic chess sets. Although with bronze or pewter pieces that are up to 17 cms tall, I imagine a game would be bit of a work-out.

§ You don't often get to see a beautiful sunset in the city, but last Friday's sunset was
gorgeous.
