Read this Pakistan newspapers editorial, "Time to change tack", for some insight in the local situation. and middleeastwire.com on the Israel-Palestinian situation: "With regard to Israel, perhaps the only ones to gain from this tragedy, they are now seizing Palestinian cities and sending in bulldozers. Many Palestinians have been shot, and Israeli Knesset members have urged Ariel Sharon to go forward. "The world will understand," said Zvi Hendel, one of the advocates. And as one Israeli military official noted today, "we are operating in the Jenin area and nobody's complaining." When asked by the New York Times as to what the latest tragedy means for relations between the United States and Israel, Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gloated that, "It's very good.." Then he edited himself: "Well, not very good, but it will generate immediate sympathy." Are we Going to Lose our Nation? [source: Tom Parmeter's desperado]

"Far from being the terrorists of the world, the Islamic peoples have been its victims - principally the victims of US fundamentalism, whose power, in all its forms, military, strategic and economic, is the greatest source of terrorism on earth." When I began crying I thought, "Bury the dead. Bury the dead and tell each one of their mundane American stories, all with the same ending, and make everyone read all 10,000 or 30,000 or whatever, and see if that makes people thirst for more blood, when it's all told out, when they've heard the stories of all the dead, and when they understand that America will go and put the ending on tens of thousands of other stories, in Afghanistan or wherever we decide, then ask if they want that to happen, or if they want to figure out some way around it.'' http://ftrain.com/wtc_attack.html [via tonie]

I managed to use the vacation (and sickness) to catch up on my reading. I can heartily recommend you the latest China Mieville novel Perdido Street Station. An excellent steampunk thriller that regardless of it's bulk you will finish in no time. If your thinking; what's steampunk? Think The Difference Engine by Gibson and Sterling. Only in my humble opinion Perdido Street is much more exciting. I've also read the dutch version of The Elementary Particles by Houellebecq but I guess this one is less interesting for non Europeans. And you or your parents would have to have been leftist hippies if you like this book ;-)
update: judging from the reviews Elementary Particles is getting at Amazon it does seem to interest Americans quite a lot. So I guess I'll recommend it too.

I've been spending the last few days in bed due to the post vacation shock of coming back to the grizzly Dutch climate after tropical Mallorca (the flu in short). This accounts for the low posts/day ratio. I'm feeling much better know so the posting should pick up pace again soon.

Received an email this week, asking if wanted to pay some attention to lichtvervuiling.nl (in Dutch), a website to create awareness of the problem of light pollution, and to educate about the value of preserving dark skies. As it is a very informative site with astounding pictures, I did.

I'm back. Had an ultra relaxing holiday in Mallorca (no, not the concrete-hotel-mallorca but the quiet finca-in-the-mountain-village-mallorca) which is absolutely beautiful (pictures will be online soon).
