When I moved into my apartment, I signed up for both Roadrunner and Verizon DSL, and have been paying for both ever since. DSL (which took about a month to get set up) was more reliable, but Roadrunner was almost twice as fast. Today, I was like, hey, it would be cool not to pay $30+ every month for this shit.

Oops.

They'll be happy to disconnect my service, but at some point, whil I was signing up for this and five other utility services, they slipped in the fact that it was a one-year contract without me noticing. So guess who's stuck paying for DSL until the end of Mach 2001, whether I get the service or not?

And what about the fact that I'm paying for an inferior service?

"We don't guarantee any particular speed, but if you want to talk to tech support, they can work with you in regards to getting the speeds up, and if there's a technical problem, they can file that as the reason for suspension of service."

So guess who gets to spend some quality time on the phone with some condescending tech support fucknut dweeb, only to be told I'm stuck paying for this shit because it's working up to their unstated specifications?

My ass.

via BBC: "Everyone should put human considerations above political differences and stances and offer aid to the victims of this gruesome act." —Muammar Gaddafi

Michael Moore: Death, Downtown
"Someone on welfare is flying my plane? Is this for real? Yes, it is. So spare me the talk about all the precautions the airlines and the FAA is taking. They, like all businesses, are concerned about one thing — the bottom line and the profit margin."

From MSNBC in 1998: Bin Laden comes home to roost
"Indeed, to this day, those involved in the decision to give the Afghan rebels access to a fortune in covert funding and top-level combat weaponry continue to defend that move in the context of the Cold War. Sen. Orrin Hatch, a senior Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee making those decisions, told my colleague Robert Windrem that he would make the same call again today even knowing what bin Laden would do subsequently. 'It was worth it,' he said."

CNET.com: eBay thwarts sale of presidential election votes
"Why should the American Citizen be left out? Congressmen and Senators regularly sell THEIR votes to the highest bidder!"

Artisan Entertainment has announced that it will be releasing Twin Peaks on DVD in February 2001. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me will be released separately by New Line Cinema on December 19. Apparently there's a problem in that the original cut of the movie was 3 hours 40 minutes, and another company own the rights to the deleted footage and wants an astronomical sum for it. More info is available at the link above.

Tuesday: Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay. I had no idea that they were owned by crap beer purveyor Anheuser-Busch until this week. If there's one thing I hate about beer, it's the phony intellectualization and empty "tradition" that goes along with it. I was reading this very history while trying to choke down a quarter of my complimentary Dixie cup of AmberBock before throwing it away in shame and disgust.

Most hateful quote found today:
"The TOPBUYS.COM™ site, presented by WebMagic, Inc., offers a wide variety of other products and services. Ask your account rep!"

"Yeah, their old stuff is better."
So You Wanna fake being an indie rock expert?

"Cassandra does the dishes, listens to Eddie's inanities. Karen angrily folds her laundry. Josh pets the dog. And another riveting episode draws to a climactic close."
Salon.com's overview and day-by-day recap of Big Brother is essential to enjoying the show. (Fellow anglophiles can also watch feeds from the UK version of the show.)

Slate perfectly sums up why I love Target in a critque of their new ads:
"You can find bargain-priced clothes that are perfectly in sync with current fashion, and you can save money on the stuff you simply have to buy. You have class, and yet you are not a sucker who pays too much. Somehow it's all very cutting edge, not middle class or embarrassing like Wal-Mart or Kmart."
