Apart from a rather pompous writing style, this article in The Times regarding US foreign policy is quite reasoned and sensible. Interesting reading. [found while cruising Scripting News]posted by howie, 9/17/2001 01:31:37 PM (Permalink #5736047)
Congrats to Penguin on finishing his first half-marathon today in under his target time of 2 hours! He completed the Great North Run in 1:55 - good job.posted by howie, 9/16/2001 03:02:45 PM (Permalink #5718294)
Friday movie this week was A Knights Tale which is not bad if you know what to expect. As afficionado of cheesy football movies (which is basically what a fair part of it is, except with lances), it was fun.posted by howie, 9/15/2001 10:43:08 PM (Permalink #5708600)
Big up to Graham Sanger, of QHP Quality Hydraulic Power in Chester. He's sent me about 18 copies of the SirCam trojan over the past few weeks and continues to do so, despite being warned 4 times by e-mail that he's got the thing. No replies, more trojans.posted by howie, 9/13/2001 12:40:37 PM (Permalink #5660268)Ever After and Never Been Kissed were last weekends mini-Drew Barrymore season, which I didn't mention along with Audrey. Drew is a sweetie.
I was actually going to avoid posting the seemingly obligatory 'shock, disbelief' message about yesterday's attacks on american cities - no-one needs to be told what to think about something like this, they already have an opinion and a point of view, and I have no information or opinion to add. However, while having a look through Blogger's special search page yesterday, I found this series of posts on EastWest, which are a much more personal account than you'll get from any of the news services - really compelling reading. The tragedy is about people, not countries or beliefs.posted by howie, 9/12/2001 01:22:08 PM (Permalink #5637900)
One of the better uses of Flash I've seen in a while, antcity puts you in control of a giant magnifying glass with which you can focus the sun's energy on citizens of your choice. Someone's put a fair bit of work into this one.posted by howie, 9/10/2001 10:58:38 AM (Permalink #5586783)

Actually, the scarier part of making that list was seeing how many books I own that I haven't read yet. I don't seem to be able to pass bookshops (or CD shops for that matter) without spending money. It's like that Dilbert cartoon with the tool shop.posted by howie, 9/4/2001 04:59:14 PM (Permalink #5477091)
After reading through a bunch of caterina.net after it was mentioned on the Blogger home page, I came across her list of every book she'd ever read, which was interesting in that wierd way other people's photo albums are. So last night, I started compiling my own list, and it was surprising in a couple of ways. First, it was shorter than I thought - I would consider myself someone who reads a fair bit, but I'm up to about 300 titles so far - and then it was very much big-list-of-one-author and then big-list-of-another-author with a few fillers. I'm sure I'm missing big lumps of something. Anyway, when I'm done, maybe I'll post it up here, with selected reviews. That'll be nice.posted by howie, 9/4/2001 04:54:35 PM (Permalink #5477010)
Went to the movies on Friday and saw Rush Hour 2, which was about what you'd expect. It's a lot more of the same as the first movie, but with more Chan-ish fights and more comfortable Tucker. Mindless fun. No surprises, but decent enough entertainment.posted by howie, 9/2/2001 10:45:00 PM (Permalink #5442806)Oooh - Huddersfield Town are top of the division! Admittedly it's the wrong division, but it's a good start. Good to see McAlpine on the telly again too.
MTV are showing 'Top 5 Extreme Videos' at the moment and number 5 just happens to be Alien Ant Farm, which is most definitely in heavy rotation at the moment. Extreme? Hmm. Unless there are some cutting child-molesting scenes to add to the Michael Jackson spoofing that they can only show after 9pm, then I really don't think so Chet.posted by howie, 9/2/2001 10:37:37 PM (Permalink #5442717)The other week they had Top 20 All Time Teen Bands, and somehow managed to get Atomic Kitten into it. Uhm, The Beatles, the Bay City Rollers?
I suppose getting annoyed at MTV playlisting is one of the first signs of cabin fever.
Oh, the upshot of all that is that I've got this thing until the end of the month. At that stage I still have a surplus screw to be removed, which I think means a repeat of at least part of all this - they can't be much easier to get out than in. After that, it just a case of exercising it and getting it used to carrying weight again. Incidentally, I've lost close to 14 pounds in the last 6 weeks or so - so it's less weight at least.posted by howie, 8/31/2001 06:02:58 PM (Permalink #5407783)
posted by howie, 8/31/2001 05:56:33 PM (Permalink #5407652)It wouldn't be Friday without some piece of rigid material going on or coming off of my leg. Having had a look at the wound on my ankle (that's what they call it - I couldn't think of a better word. 'cut' doesn't do it justice) by cutting a little window in the side of the cast, they patched it up with day-glo green fiberglass. It's quite fetching, I think.
Having spent the weekend with my folks - very relaxing - I'm now back in sunny Slough*. A couple of funky books turned up over the weekend - the new Douglas Coupland book ("All Families Are Psychotic"), which I haven't started but I'm looking forward to, and Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, which is very cool. It's a deconstruction and analysis of comic books, how they 'work' and where they are going. Halfawy though so far, and definitely recommended. Oh, and of course it's a comic book itself with the author as the main character.posted by howie, 8/29/2001 07:05:29 PM (Permalink #5367219)* it's not really Slough, but sunny Taplow doesn't have that same humourous ring to it.

Only a couple more days before I get the nice light fiberglass cast again :) Not much new in the last few days, mainly because I've been stuck at home. I could get used to this working at home business though. With a decent internet connection it would be rather pleasant. That and a wireless LAN card.posted by howie, 8/22/2001 02:30:12 PM (Permalink #5231022)
Hmmm. I don't feel any different. This whole birthday thing is overrated. I got a really funky cake from Penguin though - I'll have to try and take a picture of it.posted by howie, 8/18/2001 03:58:06 PM (Permalink #5161421)Since moaning about it the other day, I found that Belkin make a 'PDA adaptor' thing, which is a USB-to-serial-without-a-box gizmo. It's just a 'fat' serial cable that presumably shows up as COMx on the PC end. I ordered one of those, and I'll let you know how well it works. Hurrah!
For the last couple of days my butterfly-like mind has been occupied with the first few levels of the PS2 version of Red Faction, which is fun enough in a HalfLife sort of way. The controls take some getting used to after the PC-FPS standard of cursors+mouse. It has something like a plot, and OK level design. Quite pretty. I never thought I'd say it, but I think I prefer SoF to this, although it depends how violent a mood you're in really. The Iraq levels of SoF where you have just got the HMG and the bad guys don't yet are fun. Maybe Deus Ex spoiled me but all of these other things seem really linear after that.
Other things... thinking about a redesign here. Not sure what yet, or how radical exactly, but I want to play with stylesheets again.
Two other brief announcements:posted by howie, 8/16/2001 02:07:49 PM (Permalink #5123301)(in an old-skool ordered-list, no less)
- Windows ME sucks, just as much as previous Win9x's did. I'd forgotten how annoying it was since I moved to Win2k. Now I'm back with it again on this notebook.
- It's my 30th birthday tomorrow - feel free to shower me with gifts. I will be.
The final bit of substantial reading is The Hobbit followed by the Lord Of The Rings, which I've never read before. So far, I'm halfway through Book 1, and it's quite cool. I decided I wanted to read it before the first movie appears this Christmas (looks rather nice too),posted by howie, 8/16/2001 01:56:11 PM (Permalink #5123142)
