rain on the plain

rain. in fresno. in the summer. how odd.

actually, it is probably quite fitting. for two reasons--one, i just washed my car, and two, because my life it seems is an oddity. i created a moral debate over a decision to submit a resume. i know more of history and literature than my history and literature professor. i am well educated, but not an educated person.

the list goes on. but i am hungry, so i shall eat.

swimming lessons

i suck at swimming. i mean, i am pathetic. i know i haven't done laps in over two years, so it's not surprising that i'm rusty, but i can't even go a lap freestyle without swallowing water.

i'm not quite sure where my current corporal enthusiasm has come from. definitely my poor self-image and social pressures have made me unsatisfied with my body, but that hasn't always driven me on before. and my father is quite the fitness/running/body improvement motivator: i always feel guilty when he goes to the gym more times a week than i do.

but i think one of the main things is it is something i have complete control over. something that i can progress when and how i want to. the only limitations are physical (which can gradually be overcome). i have power over my health and fitness, and shallow as it may seem, it's one of the few areas of my life where i feel i have some control. so i will keep swimming and running and lifting and stretching and eating better.

classroom antics

today we were told to be sure to sign in to class for attendance. the reason given was thus: a student in the theatre department once was accused of murder, but was cleared because the attendance record proved his alibi.

now i may be old fashioned, but this disturbed me both in the fact that a student was accused of murder and that it was so non-chalantly brought up as an example of why one should come to class.

mechanical trouble

I have driven over 1000 miles in the past week.

i am sick of the interior of my car. and of the lovely scenic vistas of Cal 99.

mechanical advantage

there is nothing more macho than oiling and lubing a car. all of the homo-erotic imagery aside, getting greasy with an automobile is a very masculine thing. and no matter how puny i see myself, or how lacking i feel as a male, i am completely and fully a man when i roll under that car.

and it all washes away as i dice peaches for a fruit salsa marinade....

a/v club

so i was watching this french movie called sitcom . which is a very good movie, especially if you like a touch of porn in your cinema. but i can't stop thinking about the movie: mainly, how the title relates to the film, and what the hell "it" represented in the movie (i have changed names to protect the innocent). the movie reminded me however that my dysfunctionality was pretty tame compared to what could happen....and maybe that's why it is called sitcom: it acts as a surreal counterpart to actual life.

or maybe it has no meaning. but it's french, so i doubt that....
