i woke up from a strange rain...

i woke up from a not-so-strange rain.

it's been raining for days on end.

as of today, legible thoughts is temporarily out of service for the summer. this is partly due to a great many things...some of which include lack of time i'm willing to devote to lt's upkeep, abundance of other various activities, and honestly...burn out. when i'm at school, i have far less responsibilities...it's easy to pick up whatever i'm doing and sit down at the computer for an hour or so. at home...it's not that easy. so...this summer...until late august, i am retiring from legible thoughts, from blogger, and from the swimteam. it is hard for me to sit inside when the world outside my window is blooming and basking in the glorious sun. i'm sure that i'll be back in action...doing what i truly do enjoy doing...in august. until then...later, gator.

once upon a time there was a waterdeep show. It was a very, very good show too. Maggie came all the way from Arkansas to see it (this is Hilary). So here we sit a day later in my small dorm room searching for entertainment. Our options you ask...it's a toss up between I love Lucy or Jerry Springer. I hope Maggie opts for the first. It looks like it's I Love Lucy. Ricky and Lucy are arguing over who has to tell little Ricky to get rid of the dog...they have matching pajama's. Who has stuff like matching pajama's??? anyway, goodnight.

p.s. maggie says hi

there i was, studying for the chemistry test that i have in the morning. refuge, the campus-wide praise and worship service each thursday night, had obviously just let out...because i heard about 63958609 girls screaming in the stairwell. they were louder than usual...and talking in deep, deep voices (as if to imitate the male species). so when karla, my roommate, burst in and asked me if i had heard (MAGGIE...DID YOU HEAR!?), i, naturally, said yes. she was this mad woman (karla is the farthest thing from a mad woman...normally), and she kept screaming something about "chris". so i thought, well, there's this guy who sneaked into the dorm, and he was the one making all the noise on the stairwell. karla said, "I WAS STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM....OH MY GOSH!!!!!!" i thought, ok...i don't know who chris is, but that's cool. i kinda laughed at her. then, amidst the cries of "chris," i hear, "RICE...RICE...RICE!" i said, "what??? chris rice??? what???" karla said, "YEAH...CHRIS RICE...THE CHRIS RICE CAME TO REFUGE TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!" i said, "no way!" she said, "YES!!! HE SANG BACKUP FOR THE GUYS LEADING WORSHIP TONIGHT...THEY HAVE A WORSHIP ALBUM AND HE SINGS BACKUP FOR THEM ON IT!!!!!!!!!!! CHRIS RICE WAS AT MY SCHOOL...AND I ALMOST DIDN'T GO TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" oh my. the girl was insane! it was hilarious. but d-nag, the one night i don't go to refuge...the one night i decide to be responsible and study...is the one night that CHRIS RICE shows up, completely unannounced, to lead praise and worship!!!

coming from my physics lab this afternoon, i had an intense desire to be a science person. the science center smells of crisp paper, bright black ink, yellow chalk, and odorous chemicals. it smells of intelligence. of scientific breakthrough. of knowledge. as i walked down the three flights of stairs 30 minutes ago, i longed to be one of those students who spends 85% of their time in the science building. i longed to be a chemistry, physics, zoology, biology...a science major. i don't like science. i don't like math. i have no natural talent in either area. yet they are absolute. they are real. they are true. there is no guesswork...no flexibility...no need for creativity. science just is. i wish i were able to study something that simply is.

and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit, who lives in you.
romans 8:11

i, maggie spillers, have the resurrection power of Jesus Christ in me. so why do i live a life of beige and gray...a life of mediocrity? that Spirit which burst into my life is not a timid spirit, not a mild spirit, not a powerless spirit. it is the Spirit of God...the same God who lifted Christ from physical death. if i allow myself to think that this same God cannot rescue me from spiritual cancer, i am not living a life worthy of the Spirit. God, renew my spirit and fan the flame of resurrection power living in me today.

i don't feel the nails
i don't feel the thorns
i don't feel the stripes
i don't feel the taunts

i have no right not to feel
yet i do not
i have every reason
to hang there, today

crucified, i am not
will never be
persecuted, i am not
i am not

i deserve the pain
i long for the pain
the pain is real
i would feel it

yet i don't suffer
i don't burn from
the blood stinging
my raw, exposed flesh

please, can i feel
just a bit of that
that which is true
that which is free

that for which the tree was split
that for which the sun was killed
that for which the truth has died
that for me

you said, maggie, write
a rhyming word or two
so i wrote this out of spite
for bossy little you

yellow slithering sock
sliding up the bone
with the ticking of the clock
the pairless stands alone

one, just one, is he
perching on five toes
longing only to be free
whoops...well, there he goes

yellow slithering sock
shall slither hither no more
for those toes long to walk
unhindered, out the kitchen door

go...tell it to the mountaintops, that i'm alive

APRIL 12TH, 2001. FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS.

6:47 p.m.
arrived at westark college for a don and lori chaffer (of waterdeep) acoustic set. starts at 7:00. matthew perryman jones opens. i drove up alone, following kristin and meredith. reunited with hilary and brie. met t-rev a few moments ago...decided he's a pretty cool guy.

10:20 p.m.
heading to my car, where kristin will transfer her junk from meredith's car. the concert ended about 45 minutes ago. some of the swimmer gals talked to don and lori after the show. i listened and talked to t-rev and his friends. hilary and brie went their separate way to oklahoma. meredith, kristin, and i danced around the fountain for 20 minutes. now, meredith will head back to oklahoma, herself, and kristin and i will head back to obu to spend the night.

d&l were awesome. i've never seen two folks rock so well with only two acoustic guitars. catch a show if you get the chance!

listen to my life?

listen, you say
listen to my life
just listen
be still
know
listen

nothing, i hear
no more than nothing
deaf am i
unmoved
yet
listen

to what, i ask
listen to my life
the nothing
flowing
through
my ears

again, listen
listen with your eyes
unopened
gaze fixed
on
the sound

once more, listen
to the grace between
the nothings
making
all
the music

everytime i visit barnes and noble, i make my way to "christian inspiration" and slide the copy of listening to your life off the shelf. being a poor college student, i never actually have the $14 to purchase the book when i'm in the store. but about once a month, i pick up a copy and read it. i read the meditation for the current day. i read the meditation for my birthday. or even someone else's birthday. i close my eyes and randomly choose a meditation to read. i read tomorrow's meditation. although a slim volume, the book...the man...the life...speaks to me. one day i will buy the book. one day. but for now, i am thankful for those few treasured moments spent listening to my life in the midst of little rock, arkansas.

Death's Sigh
by Melissa Tuckfield
in memory of Vanessa Seals:

I sat in tears amid the crowd on long
And lonely pews, choking out words in song
I could not understand, of life that's after
Life, where all her tears are changed to laughter.
Now was all I knew about and pain
Was all I felt, and all I heard was rain
Upon the roof, falling steady as my
Tears; and then there came a voice, a sigh,
An earnest moan in low and whispered breath.
"Life," it said. It was the voice of Death.
This solitary word became vibrations
Within my soul. Emotions and sensations
Of guilt and hope, of fear and peace, all pulled
My heart in mixed directions. Youth had fooled
Me to believe that time was never ending,
And minutes would be wasted, vainly spending
And never savoring that softly spoken word.
Death breathed a sigh, and life is what I heard.

in chapel (the mandatory "service" each week), i sit in the front row of the balcony. i am able to rest my feet on the rail. the rail that separates me from the world below the balcony...the rail that obscures half of the stage...the rail that obscures more than half of the praise and worship lyrics. nevertheless, i like my (assigned) chapel seat. every tuesday morning, i daydream about hopping over that rail. i have this constant urge to quickly and quietly leap. this urge isn't suicidal in the least. i don't necessarily long to jump and plummet to the depths of jones performing arts center. i simply want to jump over the rail...into the world below and beyond. i know what would happen if i did jump. but i don't know how it would feel  to jump. hmmm...
