We did look at each individual account and made a decision by looking at the web site for each individual account before making a decision.
It's an unfortunate fact that people using free services don't take them as seriously as they do ones they pay for. Free service users rarely cancel their account, with a good quarter of them not even remembering they ever signed up in the first place. Many of them never bother to read, much less follow the rules. We did our absolute best to try and maintain those sites that looked like they were live and were being used, and also do our best to delete as many inactive sites as we could to reduce our maintenance burden and possibly begin offering support to free users again.
In some cases, we may not have made the right call, but there were certain criteria that we required people adhere to including checking the web site at least every two weeks for news. Ways to avoid being deleted have been posted for well over a month, and they were also mailed out in August of 2000. We feel we gave ample notice before we began trimming the fat off the service.
If we take just 2 minutes on each site, that means we could get through and make a decision on all of them in 9.4 days - that's 224 hours. As in, a solid 9.4 days - for each staff member. Because of the sheer number and sheer volume, we are unable give specifics on your particular site
