Bob Stein tells us that VisiBone has released new HTML Foldouts which are three fan-fold quick references on HTML tags, CSS styles, and special character codes. They have 50% larger type and fold more compact than the VisiBone HTML Card. The new edition HTML Card is also updated for the latest browsers and standards and now uses non-glare lamination.

Now, to address a mundane aspect of last Tuesday's events: for those of you - residents, regular visitors, vacationers - who are wondering how you're going to orient yourself in Manhattan now that the World Trade Center is gone, there's word that there's going to be a ray of hope to aid in that task. Bradbury Software has just released TopStyle Pro 2.5 CSS Editor. New features include a palette editor for manipulating all color values in style sheets and a powerful site reporting feature that indicates where styles are used and where they are not across a site. TopStyle is my prefered CSS editor not only because of its good intergration with Macromedia's Homesite but also because it is easy to use. To top things off Nick Bradbury is going to donate all money earned from TopStyle during the months of September and October to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Great companies are made from great people. [Link from Shirley Kaiser]

Over the past few days at work I have been checking out the new Macromedia Homesite 5 Beta. I have been impressed with Macromedia's forward direction on supporting XHTML. I have been running into a few issues here and there, mostly due to some misinformation I received about the W3C's specification. When I need help, I go to the Beta forum and one person has been there every time to answer my questions. Her name is Marjolein Katsma, she runs the site Homesite Help, but she does more than that... She was a Product Manager for the Visual Tools in Macromedia's Homesite (she was responsible for 13,000 lines of code regarding XHTML 1.0 Tag Definitions) and Allaire's representative in the WAI Authoring tools working group at the W3C. Why am I mentioning her? Well, recently she resigned from her Project Manager role because of the direction they were taking Homesite. You can read her first hand explanation of this in his article "NOT Goodbye - a Promise"

My rebuttal: The worst war the world will ever see is when innocent civilians are direct targets of violence and political agendas. It is easy to say that we will proceed with "rooting out these groups" but the reality is that it is not that simple. Terrorist live among us, how do you defend yourself against an invisible army? If I was to put you in a room with six of your close friends and was to tell you one of them is actually your enemy, how will you determine which one your enemy is? Furthermore, why should you believe that someone in the room is in fact an enemy? You won't know until he attacks you.

From the point of view of many in the world, the U.S. is a haven of evil, of hypocrisy. I can see the point of those who feel that way, and in the wake of especially disgusting events, I agree with them. But in many cases, what we say is also what we do. We are screaming for vengeance not to uphold America's greatness, but the greatness of the human spirit, the sense of duty that says the strong should protect the weak. [From anticipate.org - savor the irony.]

I have to express dismay at the tone of Nick's post from five hours ago, but I certainly agree with its spirit. Do not forget that we are the same country that went in four bloody years ('41'-45) from being nearly on its knees to winning the worst war the world has ever seen. I have grave concerns for civil the future of liberties here, but in the meantime, we can continue, assured that whatever the terrorists sought will not be found. This is the point in history where terrorism - state-sponsored or otherwise - becomes no longer a viable activity... the United States and a host of other countries will soon adopt a policy of rooting out these groups wherever they show themselves. That will be the victory, the revenge. My thoughts and prayers are with all who have suffered loss as a result of Tuesday's events.

CNN.com is running a poll asking what people's feelings are about Tuesday's terrorist attacks: Shock, sorrow or anger. Anger comes in the lead with 49%, shock is at 27% and sorrow is at 24%. When all is said and done and when they find the people who planned these attacks (the masterminds behind the whole thing) I think there will be one strong message: You don't fuck with the United States.

One feeling that I have had lately is the feeling of helplessness. So I did some research... How can you help? Go to the ELCA Disaster Response donation page or the LCMS World Relief donation page (where my friend and contributing editor Steve works) and donate what you can. These are non-profit organizations that provide medical supplies, food, clothing and such to disaster victims worldwide.

Well, it's been over 12 hours since I first heard to the atrocities that occurred in New York. Most everyone on my list has checked in or has been reported as safe and well, however there are still many loved ones of others that are still unaccounted for.

For those in New York, if you can, please help those in need and donate blood. Many people already are as is the case all the way across the nation in Portland Oregon, the citizens of this great country are lining up around the block to give blood completely flooding the Red Cross and in some cases being turned away until the donation centers can accommodate them. If you can't donate blood, the Red Cross would appricate any financial donation you can afford.

Some of New York's finest firefighters, medical personnel and police are working hard and in several cases risking their own lives in order to save the lives of fellow citizens. This is a risk they take every day on the job, it is nothing new for them, they take risks every day and for that we thank them and honor them for their dedication, commitment, courage and heroism.

"The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment, but it is no less than a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. People do what they must--in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures--and that is the basis of all human morality."

- John F. Kennedy

"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb", "The third big war will begin when the big city is burning"

- Nostradamus, 1654

[It's been common knowledge for several days, but this is falsely attributed to Nostradamus, who died in 1566. It would not be false to suppose that there are millions who would gladly let loose the "dogs of war" in order to see terrorism rooted out. -Editor]
