Congress has released vast sums of money. Country after country is lining up to pledge "assistance" to the US. Countries "harbouring or helping terrorists" are to be considered as targets.

Countries like the UK for instance, where a number of organization raise funds for questionable organizations? Countries like Israel for instance, which employ the same tactics of assassination and bombing as the terrorists they seek to stop? Countries like the US for instance, which have funded and trained various unpleasant organizations in Central American?

Or countries like Afghanistan, where a quarter of the population is in danger of starvation, such government that exists is in place through force, and which largely, it must be said, keeps itself to itself?

The UK is in no danger of "defeating" terrorism in Northern Ireland, despite 30 years of trying. Spain is unable to "defeat" ETA.

It won't matter how big the coalition assembled is, or the size of the military force the commit to action is, it will not be possible to "eliminate terrorism".

Uniting the nation in exceedingly tasteless jingoism.
According to no less than the Sunday Telegraph the nation is dazed but delighted after the English football team's 5-1 victory over Germany on Saturday. What a load of bollocks. Football is popular, there's no denying that, but the idea that it unites the country as one big smiley happy family is rubbish.

On Saturday night the BBC screened They Think It's Uber Alles and the Sunday headlines included Blitzed and Don't Mention the Score. My aching sides! Earlier in the week The Daily Mail, to remind us just how dastardly the Hun is, ran a picture of Germany's 1935 squad doing Nazi salutes. I'm surprised none of the papers managed Owen gives Germans the ki-bosch! or Take that Fritz!.

I must have been out with the only 2 other people in Nottingham as the pubs sloshed out at 8.30. We sat at a window table of a pub as everyone converged on the Market Square, to be rowdy in a larger group. One development over the previous decade is that there were quite a few women in the groups, something which 10 or 15 years ago would have been rare. Having been trapped in a pub during the world cup, this development seems to lower the level of aggression. Only slightly, but I'll take wjat I can get. There were also a few families. Give us another 10 or 15 years and we might be approaching a more European position.
by stephen prestage on 11:42, 3rd Sep 2001
[Add a comment]

Hi Jez,
My name is Emma Shaw and I work for London Weekend Television on a
programme called "Nightlife" which takes an in depth look at what's going on in London. On reading your advert in Bizarre magazine I was interested in finding out more about the trading cards game, about what it entails and if you meet up with people. Any information you could send me about it would be great. I'm just researching items like this at the moment, so was basically interested in finding out more to see whether it may be something we would like to feature. You can email me on name.deleted@someisporother.com or give me a call on 0000 000 0000. Thanks in advance for your help and I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
Emma Shaw
LWT.

Hmmm, what to do? The trading cards game is obviously the Trumps, but I do get the feeling she's rather missed that it's a joke, is several years old, that I don't live in London and didn't put an advert in Bizarre. Bizarre are still running it on the front of their website, but that's their doing, not mine.

I did think about offering up Pete as he does live in the Big Smell, but he declined before I even asked.
[Add a comment]
