Would you serve hot dogs at your wedding reception? In a recent survey, 23 percent of hot dogs fans said they would.
More highlights from the survey, which is part of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council's July is National Hot Dog Month campaign: Twenty percent of fans also said they would try to outlast a group of high maintenance people on a desert island if they thought a hot dog barbecue was their reward. A mere 6 percent of fans said they would make a chain of hot dogs and wear them around their neck - for when you must eat and run, of course.

Beam Me Up, Iron Chef
Upstart tv network UPN is planning an American version of Japanese cult hit Iron Chef starring (drum roll, please) William Shatner.
Two specials, which will be taped on June 28 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will feature an elaborate kitchen arena, a live audience, American chefs and Mr. Shatner. ("His attitude," [producer Larry] Thompson says of his host, "is that food is the final frontier.") The shows will air in the fall and could lead to a series.

Jacqui Malouf: Culinary Bimbo? Shoba Narayan in the NYTimes identifies that sour taste women often get while watching Food TV. In The Food Network: Where the Kitchen Is Mostly a Men's Club she writes: Most of the prime-time male chefs on the Food Network have this edgy New York manner that borders on arrogance. This is all the more surprising given that 60 percent of the Food Network's viewers are women. Perhaps women like being talked down to. Then again, perhaps not. Maybe it is just the male chefs being themselves, along with a serious shortage of female chefs to change the model. Free, but requires registration.

Sterling, CO, says: Chex Mix Rocks! It
s official. Chex brand cereal snack mix is the official snack of Sterling, Colorado. According to a General Mills press release: "I was shocked by how many people called in to say Chex Mix ruled," says Murphy. "People here were so enthusiastic about it, I thought it would be fun to make a big deal out of it and build a little excitement in Sterling." Murphy contacted Mayor Doug Smith, who offered to participate in all activities including the four-block parade, which featured the high school band and cheerleaders, local ambulance drivers, a float from the hospital, and more. Countless townspeople pitched in to make the day a success, from local bakers who created Chex Mix doughnuts to Main Street businesses that posted kids' Chex Mix drawings in their storefront windows.
