My new employer is very cool.
They're matching employee donations to the Red Cross.
I just authorized them to take my donation out of my next pay check.
I think that's cool.
Dow Plummets More Than 650 Points: Excite has had to change this headline several times so far today... And it's not getting better: first 480, then 500 and now 650. The Dow is under 9000...
I wish I could find a link, though, because I saw a guy on the Today Show basically predict this would happen. He also explained that the rebound usually brings everything back in the black... It worked out to something like an 8% drop ended up turning into an 18% gain over time (That may have been just the Pearl Harbor example... I'm not sure.).
This MSNBC article doesn't have the numbers, but it echoes the sentiment.
Just added to my list of favorite Canadian groups/companies: Muttluks.
Here's why:
A Canadian company that makes padded boots for dogs has sent hundreds of pairs to New York police to help protect their canine unit's paws from splintered glass and debris while they help search for bodies in the remains of the World Trade Center.
If this article on WIRED News has it right, the Red Cross has garnered donations totalling over $26 million since last Tuesday's tragedy.
That rocks!
This is cool: Skyscrapers with built-in wind turbines!
Buildings with integrated wind turbines could generate at least 20 percent of their own energy needs, and perhaps all. They would be more power efficient than ordinary wind farms or solar powered constructions, say UK researchers. The extra efficiency comes from the funnelling effect the buildings have. If you've ever walked around downtown Boston in the winter, you know all about that!
Interesting....
President Clinton signed a secret directive in 1998 authorizing U.S. efforts to capture or disrupt Osama bin Laden and his terrorism network, and several unsuccessful attempts were made, a person familiar with the effort said Sunday.

Larry C. Johnson explains why our perception of Osama bin Laden and his organization may be wrong...
So this [Imad Mughniyah, Hezbollah security chief] is an individual who has been aggressive in his attacks against America. And we now know through testimony that came out in the trial in New York City on the bombing of the U.S. embassy, that Mughniyah was the mentor, the ideological inspiration, for Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden saw Mughniyah as one who used violence to force the United States to retreat from Lebanon. And he believed that that same model could be used against the United States to force it out of Saudi Arabia and to punish it.

Watching total grow as I refresh the page for the Red Cross fund at Amazon is almost enough to make my heart burst.
Yay people!
To all the idiots out there screaming that they want to kill and maim in response to the WTC horrors, I submit the words of Robert Wright's Slate article The Problem with Retaliation:
Consider an alternative. Bush declares that the Afghan government is morally obliged to turn Bin Laden over and that, if it doesn't, it will risk military attack and occupation?and its leaders will themselves risk being either killed or put on trial for complicity in murder. He asks for support from the international community?including military support from NATO in the event of a war with Afghanistan. And he puts all of this in the proper rhetorical context: He is not just retaliating, but rather setting the kind of precedent that the entire world needs to set as we approach an age when terrorists will have nuclear and biological weapons. It is important that we not only bring justice to the people responsible for this devastating act of terrorism, but that we use this to form international laws and political protocols of the future.
Major stuff going down in Beantown:
BOSTON -- A heavily armed FBI team searching for suspects in the terrorism attacks in New York and Washington stormed a Boston hotel Wednesday. One person was arrested, according to broadcast reports.
"In the City of God there will be a great thunder,Brothers possibly involved in the hijacking of the plane(s) from Boston.
Two brothers torn apart by Chaos,
while the fortress endures,
the great leader will succumb.
The third big war will begin when the big city is burning"
-- Nostradamus, 1654
Fortress (Pentagon) mostly endures.
Big city (NYC) still burning.
The "great leader will succumb" thing would have me worried if I was in Washington...
Thanks to Nicci and most of all Kevin for clearing up this bit of hype.
