  • Nature Debates: Science must ‘push copyright aside’ It should be a truism that the scientific literature exists to disseminate scientific knowledge, and that scientific journals exist to facilitate the process. It therefore follows that rules for use of the scientific literature should be designed to help achieve that goal.

  • Peer-to Peer Copyright White Paper As the Napster saga illustrates, the future of peer-to-peer file-sharing is entwined, for better or worse, with copyright law. The legal fight has already broken out, with copyright owners targeting not only the makers of file-sharing clients like Napster and Scour, but also companies that provide products that rely on or add value to public P2P networks, such as MP3Board.com, which provides a web-based search interface for the Gnutella network.

  • Brown & Michaels - Comments of Mark Twain on Copyright Term MARK TWAIN ON COPYRIGHT

  • Love's Manifesto Courtney sounds off on the state of today's sordid and malicious recording industry in an uncensored quasi-essay that provided the basis for her speech at this year's Digital Hollywood in New York. Love does the math, delves into the industry's darkest fissures, exposes the miscreants, and welcomes the future's "radical democratization" through the course of her writing in an effort to dispel the corporate-engineered myths that have long plagued artists. Within, Courtney ponders the Recording Association of America, piracy, new options and equity for artists, tipping/music as a service, and new models for musicians sponsorships.

  • TheStandard.com: The Next Napster? Nowhere in Sight Improvements are being made; it's just a matter of how quickly they can address the problems on the horizon. Newer Gnutella-compliant applications like BearShare, LimeWire and ToadNode have easier interfaces and are better at managing bandwidth, says Kelly Truelove, CEO of peer-to-peer analyst firm Clip2. According to Truelove, Gnutella's network, which runs a distant second to Napster's, hasn't exceeded 200,000 unique daily users, despite a recent upswell from those anticipating a Napster shutdown.

  • The Heavenly Jukebox - 00.09 Rampant music piracy may hurt musicians less than they fear. The real threat -- to listeners and, conceivably, democracy itself -- is the music industry's reaction to it by Charles C. Mann
