Patiotism is at an all-time high here. So is captialism (which I witnessed earlier when I saw 4 men hocking flags on the median strip over on Del Amo and Cherry.).

Everytime I hear the word "war", I feel sick to my stomach. I see no other recourse than the one our country has chosen, but I still twist it around and around in my mind...and wish desperately there was another way. Suddenly I feel very cynical, partially because I see so many who are "ready for war!"...so many people who can think of nothing but revenge and retaliation...and I can't help but wonder if they will feel the same way in 6 months. I wonder if they understand that this will not be another "Gulf War" situation. The Gulf War was a clean war...it was a pretty war for the media...and it was far away--nothing took place on American soil. This war on terrorism will not be pretty, it will not be clean, and it will not be far away. I will back my President, because I realize he has been faced with a no-win situation, but I will also remember that we are the ones who created Bin Laden...and God only knows how many more monsters we have created in the name of freedom and democracy.

I wish there was another way. I wish last Tuesday had never happened. I wish that we lived in a world that was free of evil. I wish for peace.

Pray for us.

This song is a little outdated, but it feels like a pretty damn good fit right now. Unfortunately.

The eastern world it tis explodin',
violence flarin', bullets loadin',
you're old enough to kill but not for votin',
you don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
and even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
Can't you see the fear that I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away,
There'll be noone to save with the world in a grave,
take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy,
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin',
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
handful of Senators don't pass legislation,
and marches alone can't bring integration,
when human respect is disintegratin',
this whole crazy world is just too frustratin',
and you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China!
Tehn take a look around to Selma, Alabama!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space,
but when your eturn, it's the same old place,
the poundin' of the drums, th pride and disgrace,
you can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace,
hate your next-door-neighbour, but don't forget to say grace,
and you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

--Eve of Destruction, Barry McGuire

Speaking of the Los Angeles Times, on tuesday morning, there were two articles on the front page of the paper-main section-one was about the attack faced by Ahmed Shah Massoud by the Taliban people and the other about poor screening for security guard positions...the same day of the attack....all I have to say is that this is not a coincidence, this goes deeper than the public is capable of knowing....the scary part is that this is a major newspaper....a respected one too...someone in at the newspaper knew of the coming attack, that is my theory, and that this person gave whomever the message was intended for, the confirmation that this attack was going to happen...spread the word everyone....this is major serious...if you don't believe me, pick up a copy of the LA Times-the tuesday print....PLEASE, LET PEOPLE KNOW OF THIS.....

I think it is just too soon for me to read articles like this. The pain and the grief are still too new, and this feels like salt in an open wound, and my first inclination was to strike out at this reporter for his opinion. Sigh. However, I'm not going to do it. I think there is enough anger floating around the universe right now--it's bad karma, and I'm trying to keep mine clean. For the record, I am one of the Americans who doesn't believe yesterday's attack was about Democracy. I think many of us know that we are hated. What most of us didn't realize was the degree of hatred directed towards America. There were children dancing in the street over this. Children. Human beings taught from birth to believe that it's God's will if America is obliterated. I get the feeling that all these terrorists have known from birth is hatred. They were fed it in the womb through their mother's umbilical cord, they were nursed on it as infants, and lived on a daily diet of it for their entire lives. They didn't KNOW anything else. There are entire generations of human beings who don't know how to NOT hate the United States. Is that not also a tragedy of untold proportions?

edited: Eventually, I will be able to face the part our government played in this. Just not right now. Does that make sense?

(Note: Nostradamus died in 1566)

Nostradamus didn't predict this, according to Rumor Watch...it would certainly be creepy enough if he did, but he didn't..so I wish people would stop sending me emails about it. I realize we are all looking for answers and explanations...but my opinion is that there ARE NONE. There is no way to explain 11 year olds dancing in the streets because thousands of innocent people were slaughtered--at least, not to a rational mind.

Within a half-hour of today's terrorist attacks, volunteers from around the country filed into American Red Cross blood centers and hospital blood banks...

I just got back from Long Beach Memorial Hospital...my appointment to give blood was at 1:30, but they couldn't get to me until 3:30--and for once, waiting was not a bad thing. From what I understand, people are turning out in record numbers (the wait here in Long Beach at the Red Cross was 4 hours.).

It's hard to find the words for this. This morning, I woke up in another country. We have been very lucky up until now in America. Terrorism is something that happens in those far-off Middle-Eastern countries. We blithely go about our daily lives, shaking our heads at the rest of the world and remarking about how horrible it is, all the while never once imagining that it will ever TOUCH us. It touched us today. Where we go from here is largely unwritten at this point. We will mourn the lives that were lost, we will express outrage and demand retaliation against whoever did this...the impact from this day will affect the rest of our lives. It will effect our children's lives, it will change the way we look at ourselves, and the way we look at other people...at other countries. Our luck, it seems, has run out.

Side note:
If you are unable to give help directly, but want to do something...here's something many of us can do...go to the nearest hospital, and give blood. They are going to need it in the next few weeks.
