I'm listening to Sade's new cd, Lovers Rock. It seems altogether appropriate for Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day to all!

New entry over at Diaryland.

Ugh. I'm sick.

I've left Danticat and have moved on to Garcia Marquez' Love in the Time of Cholera.

Testing 1, 2, 3...

Tuesday, January 23, 2001
Again, I'm sorry for being so lax about updating. It's just that whole choosing to do other things thing.

Right now, I'm listening to the most recent show of Fresh Air. It's all about the impact that fast food has on our country. Did you know that all kinds of natural and artificial flavors are added to fast food to simulate the smells of the actual food? So, for example, burgers are flavored with the taste of grilled burger meat. Also, McDonald's fries have natural beef flavoring added to them. I don't really eat fast food, but, all the same, this show is just sort of scary in what it reveals.

Okay, going to go write another entry over at Diaryland. It's good to have friends back again.

One last thing -- I'm reading Edwidge Danticat's The Farming of the Bones. It's all about a horrible massacre that happened under Trujillo's reign in the Dominican Republic. I didn't even know that genocide at this scale ever occurred in North America. It's a stirring and frightening books. I'm also reading Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres, which is pretty much a retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear. It's a fabulous read.

Off to write...

I've not had time -- no, I've had time, but I've chosen to do other things -- to update my Diaryland diary in about a week. Last week, some people @ work mentioned they'd read about online journals in the local paper. The article had mentioned the Diary Registry at diarist.net. I'm wary, now, about posting anything new there because I don't want them to read the archives from when I was student teaching. So, for now, that diary is, literally, under lock and key.

School will start again on Monday. I'm eager to get back in the swing of things again. I miss classes. I bought some of my books yesterday and I'm pleased that we're reading several interesting things for my Contemporary Fiction class. In fact, many of the texts happen to be ones I've meant to read for quite some time. Yeah! It's always excellent when I can pick a class with a good reading list.

Other than school beginning, not much new to report. Seen lots of movies lately; read lots of books. I've not been sleeping well at night, unfortunately, and I'm trying to figure out how to fix that. I may have to start drinking Valerian Root tea at bedtime. In addition to feeling a bit tired, I'm also wicked sore from Sunday's and Monday's exertions at the gym. I did quite well the other day and ran 4 miles in 35 minutes. It doesn't sound like much, I know, but it means a lot to me. I couldn't bear to go this morning what with soreness and sleepiness, so I'm going after work today.

By the way, I'm going to SXSW after all. Em's all set up with a place there and so we'll get to try out all the new bars. Yeah!

Okay, off to do stuff. I'm determined to get dumb errand-y stuff out of the way this afternoon.

I discovered a new journal over the weekend that I'm enjoying reading. Have you read Avocation? The author lives in Boston, which means I get a little slice of a life there.

I have a new journal entry at Diaryland.

I've wanted to go to SXSW ever since I heard about the music festival there. This year, I actually think I might go to the interactive festival. Emily and Brandon will move there next month, and so I'd get to see them and have a place to stay. I do have to check with the head of my department and see if she'll give me the time off as a conference. I only have one personal business day for the entire year. Ouch.

I knew Bejeweled was catching. It's hours of fun.

New journal entry over at Diaryland.

Teeth aching horribly; massive amounts of Extra Strength Tylenol purchased for consumption every four hours.

I miss the sun.

Hooray for the new server! I contributed towards the fund, did you? I'm happy that Blogger won't be so horribly, painfully slow.

Speaking of which, I have posted, or rather tried to post new entries since 1/2, but they never quite made it to published status. Between Blogger being so slow and my school's networking being periodically messed up, I've been completely unable to post.

Making New Year's resolutions are lame, I know. I'm just going to make a list of things I want to do this year. That seems easier than committing myself to make changes I may or may not be ready to make. Yeah, I did make real resolutions, but I'm not going to talk about them here.

Thing I Want to do in 2001 (in no particular order)...
1) Visit Emily and Brandon in Austin
2) Leave Binghamton; Move to Boston
3) Get a cool job working with kids and doing something with English Literature and technology
4) Learn HTML
5) Run some more 5k races and perhaps a 10k
6) Visit San Francisco
7) Make my online journal more widely read
8) Buy clothes that I will wear, books I will read, and cds I will love. I'm tired of my stuff defining me.
9) Learn a new sport. Perhaps kayaking or rock-climbing or yoga.
10) Keep drinking more tea than coffee. I really, really like tea. Why do I always think I need coffee?
11) Get Tivo because I know it will make my t.v. viewing more productive.
12) Read about Buddhism.

I think that's all I wanted to get down for now. I'm going to go work on #10 and make myself some tea. And also pay some attention to the boy, who has been so testing and sorting through his computer equipment all day (one of his resolutions).
