sunday, september 16, 2001 i won't be around much again until thursday. i could write about my night last night, but i think i'll keep it to myself for a change. it was a good night and that's all i'll say. :) tomorrow evening starts rosh hashanah. i have work in the morning and then michael and i are *hopefully* flying out to baltimore. i'll be back late wednesday. l'shanah tovah to all those who celebrate jewish holy days. take care and i'll "see" you all soon. 04:17 pm est [link] [5 comments] saturday, september 15, 2001 incredible: this 11:06 pm est [link] [1 comment] it was very good to see my family tonight. we had dinner all together at a restaurant for my grandpa's birthday and then we hung out at my grandparents' house for a while. it felt good to hug loved ones. 10:27 pm est [link] [1 comment] "Heart's Gladness is seeing the United States unite after the tragic events that occured on 9-11-01. It is seeing flags waving, people praying, and candles burning. It is knowing that we will get through this, together." 01:12 pm est [link] [no comments] new entry: the process of reaction. my poetic attempt at expressing emotion, thoughts, ideas. 12:05 pm est [link] [1 comment] friday, september 14, 2001 my brother just phoned and said he's in my area so he wanted to stop by. cool. he hasn't seen the house since we moved in. and it'll be good to hug him. (i actually haven't seen any of my family since tuesday, so i really need to see them this weekend.) 10:39 pm est [link] [no comments] i guess i was more drained that i thought. i got home from work late, around five, and ended up falling asleep in my bed until around nine. i'm trying to decide if i want to write an entry about last night yet. guess we'll see how i feel in a bit. 10:06 pm est [link] [no comments] thanks for calling me from california thom. i really appreciate it and i enjoyed talking to you, even if the subject matter wasn't so enjoyable. i miss you and love you. 10:03 pm est [link] [no comments] it's things like these, the red cross relief fund via amazon.com, that make me have faith in humanity. i can't even recall all the details i heard on npr this morning, but people are really reaching out, giving of themselves, and trying to help. it makes me feel proud to be an american, proud to be a member of this people. if you want to help, here are some resources! 12:46 pm est [link] [no comments] flags hang from the poles all along harvard street in brookline, even in the rain. my mom said that yesterday, while driving her school bus van, she was overwhelmed by the number of american flags she saw everywhere. yesterday my brother hung the flag on my parents' house and then he lined the front walk way with lots of mini flags. and i heard this morning on npr about former marines calling in to the recruiting office, wanting to come back into active service. the patriotism that has swelled forth from people in this country is impressive. all of it makes me feel more secure. 09:20 am est [link] [no comments] thursday, september 13, 2001 new entry: note to my readers 11:48 pm est [link] [no comments]
when i must leave you for a little while, - author unknown 11:39 pm est [link] [2 comments] on tuesday, upon seeing my mom within hours of the attacks on the US, my papa said, through clenched teeth and arms shaking with emotion: if they'll take an eighty year old, i'll go and fight. my papa shouldn't have to feel this way. he fought in a war already. he shouldn't feel the need to fight in another. this makes me so sad and so very angry. (i will be posting an entry tomorrow about the service i attended tonight. it did help me feel a bit better, so that's good news at least.) 11:37 pm est [link] [no comments] fortune cookie fortune from my lunch with the rabbi this afternoon: "keep on charging the enemy so long as there is life." i read this less than half an hour after i was telling the rabbi about the rescued firemen that were found alive in the SUV buried under the rubble at the WTC. it gave me chills and even the rabbi declared "oh my G-d!" upon reading it after me. wow. 03:46 pm est [link] [no comments] (CNN) -- Five firefighters were found alive in New York on Thursday, trapped in an SUV buried in rubble from the World Trade Center. Two of the firefighters were able to leave the vehicle unassisted; all five were transported to the hospital. yay! some good news! 01:40 pm est [link] [5 comments] a special solidarity guestmap 11:15 am est [link] [no comments] wednesday, september 12, 2001 i came online to attempt to clear out my inbox. instead i talked to wendy on aim and received confirmation that my dear friend shubhra is indeed safely grounded in philadelphia. i just can't focus this evening. i wrote a message to my wild women friends, who i haven't been able to hang out with in ages. i'm just out of it. i should try to sleep. not that i can fall asleep without having thoughts of all the people going to bed alone tonight. people who should have loved ones next to them. damn these terrorists. damn them all. 10:46 pm est [link] [1 comment] tomorrow night we are having a special service at the shul, along with a catholic church, in response to yesterday's tragedies. since it will be an interfaith service, catholic and jewish, my mom and dad are going to join michael and i. i hope it will help me feel a bit better. we got the southwest thing all worked out. if we can't fly we've made secondary plans to drive. i'm not crazy about these plans, since i have to work until one on monday and then be back to work on thursday morning, but i do want to see my/our family for rosh hashanah (michael's side of the family that is). so we'll drive if we have to. 10:24 pm est [link] [no comments] well. today i went to southwest.com to check on what would be happening to ticketless travel, which is the way michael and i always fly. as expected, ticketless travelers must now provide something on paper to board all southwest flights. so tonight i used our confirmation number (provided by michael) to attempt to retrieve, online, our flight confirmations. turns out the number michael gave me is from a different time we flew home already. so michael called southwest. they can't find a reservation for either of us for any flights in the next month. hmm. so who knows. we're waiting for his dad to call with this trip's confirmation number. hopefully we'll be able to get home to baltimore for rosh hashanah after all! 06:49 pm est [link] [no comments] "BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- A day after catastrophic strikes on two renowned symbols of American power, law enforcement sources say officers in Boston and southern Florida took several men into custody in connection with the attacks." they've raided a hotel in the city (boston). the whole thing is simply frightening. i'll let you know if i find out more details. 02:09 pm est [link] [no comments] i am afraid of what the future will bring. how will the US respond to yesterday's terrorist attacks? what do you guys think? 11:43 am est [link] [1 comment] i guess i've been posting a lot already today huh? i am at work, but i'm still shell shocked. i can't stop thinking about yesterday, the day that changed everything in the US. i'll probably be taking and compiling all of the blog posts i've written since yesterday morning into an entry, just for my own purposes. i often re-read my journal archives and don't often re-visit my blog archives, so i want to get all these posts together in one place. i've also been saving copies of many of my friends weblogs, journal entries, and news pages from the past 24+ hours. i just feel this need to document this event, the day. maybe it'll help me explain what happened to my future children with more clarity and resolve. i don't know. thank you to everyone who's e-mailed, commented, and thought of me. i love you all. i will write back when i'm able to. now, i really should do some work here at the shul. 11:32 am est [link] [no comments] i am flying to baltimore with michael on monday afternoon for the jewish new year. then we're flying back wednesday night. my dad says that security will be air tight and that i don't have to worry. my perspective, however, of air travel, has forever been altered. i don't like the fact that i'll be traveling in an air craft that terrorists can turn into a weapon of death and destruction. i'm scared. we were going to go to the israel solidarity rally at the UN in NYC on sunday, september 23rd. now i'm not sure we'll be going. i thought it was safe before, now i don't know. i don't know if it will even happen now, but if it does, i'll have a lot to think about before saying i'll still go. i know i shouldn't let these terrorists get the best of me, but it's hard not to be scared. especially since it seems this attack may have something to do with the US's support of israel. i don't know what kind of plans these terrorists have in place. :( 11:27 am est [link] [1 comment] hey mar, i want to share two things with you (and with others as well). according to my dad, michael, and the news, they do have radar covering the no-fly zone, however, the planes were too low *and* the hi-jackers had dismantled the devices on the planes that send out the signal to the devices that track planes. so hopefully that will help clear that up for you. the other thing is this, everyone i've spoken to has told me that there's no way anyone in the WTC tower would have seen the plane coming at them. it would've happened too quickly. so hopefully that will help you feel a little bit better about that as well. i kept having that horrifying thought myself. hugs to you and all who are feeling the effects of this terrorism, especially those who lost loved ones. 11:21 am est [link] [5 comments] judy posted this: "Just a note... I don't know if the cities that were attacked are still in need of blood or not, but if they are, and you're holding out on donating just because you've been pierced or tattooed in the last year -- THAT IS BULLSHIT. Go give blood anyway! It is tattoo discrimination at work, getting inked does not put you at risk for contracting hepatitus or any other diseases when it is done in a sterile safe studio enviornment. All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitus, they screen the iron levels and all kinds of other potential problems before it is given to a bank anyway." that's what i used to think too judy! however, when a close friend of mine was desparately in need of blood back in 1999, i investigated this thoroughly. as far as i know they don't even ask about piercings. and as far as tattoos goes, it turns out that the reason they can't accept blood for a certain period of time after you've been tattooed has to do with the pigment from the tattoo ink. people receiving chemo and other treatments are highly sensitive to these pigments, which generally don't affect healthier people. since they really can't or don't regularly screen for these pigments, they set limits on how recently you can have been inked before donating. this keeps all of the blood available for all people who might need it. does that help explain it judy? i hope so. :) also, the red cross is requesting that people wait until tomorrow to donate additional blood because they've been swamped. 11:02 am est [link] [no comments] there are many interesting articles on boston.com this morning. 10:52 am est [link] [no comments] the rabbi i work for is the jewish state police chaplain in massachusetts, so he's at logan airport talking with families who were affected by yesterdays tragedies. we're trying to arrange for a special service to be held tomorrow night here at our synagogue. hopefully it will work out. it would be nice to have a service to attend. 10:17 am est [link] [no comments] so last night i turned off my computer and the television too. we decided to go to get a bite to eat because i was hungry and needed to get out of the house. however, we went to a restaurant with televisions, without thinking, so we never really escaped the media blitz. fortunately the coverage was different than what we'd been seeing all day, but it was still overwhelming. i didn't sleep well at all and there's already been someone in here today (the shul office), complaining about not getting a big enough discount on her high holy day seats. she was being impatient and then started yelling at eleanor. what a joke. some people are totally clueless. today, of all days, is a day for patience and compassion. 09:58 am est [link] [1 comment] tuesday, september 11, 2001 i just freaked out a bit on michael and his two friends. it had to do with someone telling me to turn the tv off and then asking me questions while i was on my pc, making me feel cornered. so i ran out of the house in my bare feet and got really, really upset. then i talked to michael and my dad on the phone. anyway... it's not worth explaining in detail, but i think i need to turn this off and read a book or something. i plan to watch the president's address and then maybe i'll go to sleep. i'm just so devastated by the loss of life and all the horrible things that have happened today. not to mention my inside family and how they're feeling. so i'm calling it a night folks. hope you are all safe and sound and tucked in tightly next to or near your loved ones tonight. 07:52 pm est [link] [1 comment] i received this e-mail from my friend heather just now:
Sent: September 11, 2001 7:02 PM today has been a difficult day for us all...
i believe that violence is a call to love,
peace, --here is my response to her and my message for all of you as well: thank you heather. i extend love, warmth, peace, and gentle hugs back to you.
shalom, 07:10 pm est [link] [no comments] putting away laundry to distract my mind a bit. also watching bits and pieces of the cnn broadcast on tv. 07:01 pm est [link] [no comments] "As rescue workers tried to reach the injured and recover the dead at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, explosions were seen and heard in Kabul, Afghanistan. President Bush will address the nation at 9 p.m. EDT." -- from cnn.com 06:15 pm est [link] [1 comment] i can relate to what mar expresses here. i'm afraid to turn the tv off. i'm afraid that something else might happen. i'm scared for the country. 04:27 pm est [link] [2 comments] the red cross needs blood dontations. the site is really bogged down right now, but i'm hoping to find out if i'm eligible to donate blood when it gets back to normal. (i have tattoos, so i don't know if they'll take my blood these days or not.) 04:26 pm est [link] [no comments] susannah of flutter glub meow has been posting a lot today too (about today's events). she's also in boston. 04:24 pm est [link] [1 comment] we voted. we walked and talked. i still don't feel much better. thom heard that his sister's friend slept in late today (here in boston) and decided not to take an early flight back to LA. that decision saved her life. why couldn't all lives have been saved? why? 03:45 pm est [link] [no comments] new entry: a very sad day in the US today 03:42 pm est [link] [no comments] michael and i are now going to vote. i need to do my part to support democracy today. now even more so than planned when i woke up. 02:34 pm est [link] [no comments] the section of the pentagon that was hit, that is the very location in the pentagon where my uncle's office was when he worked in that building. that's the part of the pentagon he visits when there on business. thank hashem he wasn't there today! my mom has seen many listings of synagogue closings on a different news station than the one i've been watching. i'm glad i didn't go in. 02:02 pm est [link] [1 comment] disgusting: palestinians cheer upon hearing of the attack on the US. 01:54 pm est [link] [2 comments] i know i've been blogging an awful lot this morning, but it's helping me to manage my emotions regarding this most terrifying event. 01:06 pm est [link] [4 comments] many, many colleges, including my brother's, have been closed for the day. even the local mall has shut down for the day. nasa has shut down as well. judith's fiance john is still unlocated. my old friend gary and his wife haven't been located by thom yet. renee has friends she's trying to find out about. my uncle has friends he's worried about. scott, from work, has a brother-in-law in nyc, in manhattan. eleanor, from work, has a granddaughter in manhattan she is worried about. i'm worried about dara. i'm praying for all of these people and anyone else i missed. 12:55 pm est [link] [2 comments] the governor, jane swift, just spoke on tv. no direct threat has been made on massachusetts. they are not going to shut down the special 9th district congressional primary today. jane swift says that the most dramatic response we can make is to go vote. show the terrorists that they can't shut down our democratic process. so i'm still going to vote in a little while. 12:47 pm est [link] [1 comment] 12:31 pm est [link] [no comments] link from marilyn: world trade center terrorism attack 11:44 am est [link] [no comments] i'm staying home. my uncle mark has a ton of friends who work at the trade center. he's scared and sad. the details are still unfolding, but the president has denounced the alleged terrorist attacks and has vowed to hunt down those responsible. i'm so sad. going back to the tv now. 11:43 am est [link] [no comments] i can't believe we watched the second tower collapse. i can't believe this is happening. we've even seen footage of the second plane hitting the first tower. i can't even imagine what it must be like in NYC right now. dara - are you okay??? there still aren't many details released on the pentagon attack. 11:05 am est [link] [no comments] the car bomb at state department didn't actually happen, however, a united airlines flight has been reported by the fbi as crashing at or near camp david! they are trying to decide what to do. congress may be evacuated from DC. these coordinated, simultaneous attacks... wtf? terrorism attacks on the USA? 11:01 am est [link] [4 comments] a car bomb at the state department in DC. a plane going down? in pittsburg? so many details. not much news on the pentagon though. so that's still unclear. gotta get back to the tv. 10:51 am est [link] [no comments] there is talk that the palestinians might be claiming responsibility for these attacks. i'm not going in to work. at least not yet. i mean yesterday someone dumped a refridgerator (with the door on) in front of the shul. carol thought it might be a bomb. what if it had been? we have family in all of the places that have been hit. my uncle WORKS at the pentagon. michael's sisters are in manhattan. i can't believe this. this is so scary! 10:42 am est [link] [no comments] this is the scariest thing i've ever heard. get to a tv. turn on the news. the US has been attacked by terrorists. the world trade center and the pentagon were hit by planes. i can't even type, i'm too upset. all non-essential massachusetts state workers have been sent home. the FAA has shut down all air travel nation-wide. all boston hi-rises are being evacuated. one of the two world trade center towers had been completely destroyed. seven people were seen by CBS news, jumping from the top of the second tower to escape the fires. american airlines flight 11 left from boston, headed for LA, and was hi-jacked.:( :,,,( the second tower just collapsed. this is so scary! 10:28 am est [link] [2 comments] i'm off to vote. then i'm headed into work. tonight i'm babysitting for benjamin. then i'm going to come home and go right to sleep. ha! yeah right. just like i went to bed on the early side last night (1:30 am). guess i wasn't tired, just sick of working all the time. hopefully i'll be refreshed for today. of course the oil delivery truck had to come this morning while i was trying to sleep in! ergh! oh well. gotta run along now. tah-tah! 09:57 am est [link] [no comments] monday, september 10, 2001 so much for leaving early. i left at five and then went to have dinner with michael at johnny rockets. i am going in late tomorrow though, around 10:30 or 11, so that's good. i'm also having lunch with the rabbi tomorrow, that ought to be neat. tonight i'm going to read, play with my clie, shower, and relax in bed. yay! tomorrow morning i'm going to sleep in a bit and then i'm going to vote for cheryl jacques in the special congressional primary election. :) 07:32 pm est [link] [no comments] i am so looking forward to leaving early today. i just need to, so i am. i'm tired, run down, and sick of working tons of extra hours. i just need a mini-break this afternoon. so i'll be leavinv early... well, i will be if i'm able to get a certain amount of work accomplished. anyway. i'm hoping to go home, take a bath/shower, put my new, fresh, clean sheets on my bed, and snuggle up with my clie and play some bejeweled! :) did i mention that the game is addicting? i've totally fallen in love with my clie. i've already bought luach, the jewish integrated calendar add-on, and i'm planning to buy splashID, a password storage program, after i've tried it out a bit more. who knows what else i'll be downloading and buying for it? i'm glad these programs aren't too expensive! lol. anyone got suggestions? send me links. :) (mid - where can i find dope wars?) some things i want to mention about this weekend: michael went out on saturday while wearing a t-shirt he borrowed from me - might i add that the t-shirt was an ani difranco one with the words "here comes little naked me" written across the front and the naked chick righteous babe records logo on the back. LOL! i was quite amused. i also listened to gordon by the bare naked ladies a lot this weekend. what a great cd. i don't love all the songs, but i do enjoy most of them. (i've also included this post as an entry, just because.) |
