ONDCP live webcast on MDMA (Ecstasy) 10:30 a.m. to noon PST

Wanna tell the government what you think of their idiotic new MDMA policies? You'll get your chance today, as the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), is holding a live videoconference (you can still watch the archive) from 10:30 a.m. to noon PST on the topic "What's All the Rave About?: What You Should Know About Ecstasy."

Viewers will have the opportunity to call or fax questions to their "experts," a panel of government-selected lackeys whom I've never heard of, and former MDMA users - none of them a part of National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) researcher Marsha Rosenbaum's interesting study of happy campers, I assume. I doubt anyone will be talking about their life-changing experience blissed out at the Endup on a Sunday afternoon, but who knows?

We encourage you to take this opportunity to call in and let the government know how you feel about its policy of prohibiting MDMA and making criminals out of otherwise law-abiding people who use it without causing harm to others. (Steve Robles)

Read Steve's report on another MDMA conference and some of his other writing.

4/21/2001 04:07:32 PM This week's U.S. News & World Report (often dubbed U.S. Snooze) has an article:
Anarchy Inc. hits the streets of Quebec
Protesters crib from the companies they hate
Writer Joshua Kurlantzick doesn't seem to know his history. It has largely been the other way around. Activists have been doing more with less for a long time.

Activists were using the internet back when it was a completely non-commercial space. And it is corporations that appropriate ideas, images, and even tactics from activists.

Paul Krugman bashes the protests in the Sunday New York Times while a story in Saturday's LA Times give a more sophisticated picture of the activists. And a column in Newsweek is nostalgic for old-fashioned radicals (who were attacked with just as much venom back then).

4/21/2001 01:50:21 PM We've posted an article by John Ross on the lessons from Mexico for what would happen if the FTAA is implemented. There are also links to coverage and resources.

The Institute for Public Accuracy is putting out releases with comments on the FTAA. One of the people quoted in a release on Thursday, Maria Luisa Mendonca of the Global Justice Center was on a panel on the PBS Newshour on Friday.

Commondreams has lots of great opinion pieces, news and links.

One of the draft chapters of the FTAA focusing on investment has been leaked and posted online. The Toronto Globe & Mail has an article on the leak.
