Good morning! It's been a virtual posting marathon for me lately, updating the many Blogs where I've participated with such vigor until my very recent absence from cyberspace. The provocation has been my experience with the greatest Mac upgrade I've discovered yet: a little browser from germany called iCab. The installer for the latest preview version fits on a floppy, offers a serious challenge to the popular browsers. It's not designed to bury you in advertising either, but instead it offers a degree of control similar to Mozilla and Opera: for instance, it allows to to control how animated gifs will run on your machine: normal, once-only, or never. Like a true alternative browser, it strives to be "standards-based", and doesn't substitute it's own idiosyncractic behavior when it falls short. But iCab is much less of a resource hog than any browser I've used. I'm using it on an aging 25Mhz Mac with no math co-processor, and it's overall performance has been world class. I might add the interface doesn't suffer from the language problems we see in some "imported" software. An all of this free, from a single developer, Alexander Clauss. he's done a great job so far, but: "The development of iCab is not finished at the moment, some features of the final version are missing. But you can try the iCab Preview at the download page...." Get the preview now, I say, it's pretty darn good, especially for older macs. The finished versions will be for sale soon. Domain Registration, Design and Hosting Package " a low cost solution that frees you from the chore of negotiating each of the individual tasks neccessary to establish your unique presence on the world wide web." The is the cheapest and easier way I've seen to get a domain established on the web. US$100 pays all fees for the first year, and you also get unlimited mail accounts @yourdomain Monday, June 18, 2001
We have 2 kinds of chatrooms available now. There's an IRC gateway that is very fast after the applet loads. Help files are available from a link on the chat window. Soon we'll also have a JavaZOOM chat room installed here. Send mail to Empowered Web if you and your friends want to help test theirs. Tuesday, June 05, 2001
the archive links in BLOGWORLD are gradually being restored, and the audio postings will have a checkbox so you can decide if and when you want to load the file. Sorry they don't stream - but thanks to the fact that the Java 1.1 support in most newer browsers supports uLaw 2:1 compression, they provide a reasonable approximation of 16bit quality and no special software is required. Don't you absolutely deluge of adverstising that takes over your machine when you use RealPlayer? Bah Humbug! My plan for the near future is to stream higher quality audio from Java2 servlets. Stay tuned! Tuesday, May 22, 2001
A new audio posting to Virtual Eugene Oregon comes with it's own player. All in a Blogger post. The fact that this clip player supports uLaw 2:1 compression allows 16bit quality, which is a vast improvement over the sound available in java 1.0.2. We'll be using these for sound clips all over "BLOGWORLD' eventually. Thursday, May 17, 2001

It's my pleasure to announce 2 new blogs started by one of our software engineers at Virtualrealo. First, let's make it clear that I disavow all knowledge of what Silver Fox is doing at these 2 Blogs. Second, whatever it is, I am certain that it does not reflect the opinions of his employer. With that in mind, be sure to visit: NAZI BLOG and don't miss his continued ravings at: Have a Nice Day, Sieg Heil! Friday, February 09, 2001
I'm not supposed to announce this, but we're working on a sentient AI at the Virtual Republic. I'm curious about how it would do in a chat room. Coincidently, I got this from USENET:Subject: Re: ChatterBots Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2001 11:02:10 +0100 Organization: Budapest University of Technology and Economics Message-ID: References: <959uav$ots$1@node17.cwnet.frontiernet.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: ural2.hszk.bme.hu X-Trace: goliat.eik.bme.hu 981021739 7570 152.66.130.2 (1 Feb 2001 10:02:19 GMT) NNTP-Posting-Date: 1 Feb 2001 10:02:19 GMT X-Sender: pt131@ural2 In-Reply-To: <959uav$ots$1@node17.cwnet.frontiernet.net> Xref: news-out.uswest.net alt.irc.bots:1213 On Wed, 31 Jan 2001, Chris Cowart wrote: > Does anyone have or is working on a Bot that can carry on a conversation in > a chatroom. Greetings! Some timely and important announcements: 1) Almost Live is not fully connected yet at our new servers. I promise to at least get a 10 minute blues jam and the old QT movies back before the weekend. Once it's back up - it'll be great, thanks to our new international backbone connections. 2)We're listed with the New Blogs on the Bloghop page. Vote for this Blog, and all the other blogs in BLOG WORLD Vote early, and vote often, and punch that ballot ALL the way through, butterfly! 3)We now have a Chat room. It's connected to IRC and it works really well, once all the Java classes are loaded. Be patient the first time you use it. It's worth the wait. This version is only temporary, and it's provided by an outside vendor so there are some restrictions. I'm working on a better one that will allow you more options. Wednesday, February 07, 2001

Cards by Nancy Bright With the Saturday Market closed until Spring, Nancy's income has dropped to about zero, in spite of the 10,000+ visitors she's had at her gallery. Her greeting cards are actually less expensive than the "commercial" variety, and prints are also available at reasonable prices. I'm posting this to help support a local artist, whose images are well known throughout Oregon. Avoid those cluttered shopping sites - Nancy has an 800#. I've just added NewsNow to the Tuesday, December 19, 2000
Newsroom I've added some goodies as promised. First, the Portland version of Indymedia. I also added a really good I Ching applet. Give it a minute to load it's images the first time you use it: after that, it's pretty quick. For both of these items, you may need to use the scroll bar that appears at the bottom of your window in order to get a good view. Or grab the lower right corner and resize it.
