The life and trials of a sleep-deprived, forgetful college student.

So it's the beginning of another school year and everything, so I've decided to try a new look. Tell me what you think.
8.31.2001
Oy. I've been playing Riven again (got the game for Christmas the year it came out, made it about halfway through, got hopelessly stuck and gave up). Bought the cheat guide today for around $2 (fabulous sale at Chapters), and um, well it's going a lot more smoothly this time.

More stuff about the word 'cunt.' It doesn't come from cunning, it's origin is uncertain, see Take our Word for it for more. I was surprised to find out that it's considered by many to be the worst, most obscene word in English. I guess I hadn't really thought about it much, but right now I can think of worse... although they're more combinations of words than ones often used. Um, let's see. There's an entire dissertation on the C-word, written by Matthew Hunt. Here it is. Apparently, it's really good. At the same time, I found some promising feminist websites, links to which are here. Just finished Goblet of Fire last night... pretty upset by the ending.
I never liked the word 'cunt' because I heard somewhere that it was a derivative of 'cunning.' And you know, the image of the devious, preying seductress. However, I just learned that 'cunning' used to mean (before the late 1500's) clever, learned, and skillful. Just got the new David Usher CD. Nifty halographic case. Ooh, mesmerizing. Oh yeah, and those eyes... hehe. Oh, and what's this, a poster of the gorgeous guy himself inside? He's pimping himself, but I'm okay with it. Wow, track 8, My Way Out. This song rocks.

Check out my new collaborative blog, it kind of sucks. But that's because it isn't really anything yet. Now reading: - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Wonderful, as expected. - Sympathy and Science: Women physicians in American medicine, Regina Markell Morantz-Sanchez. Pretty good, dry of course. A history of women's entrance and acceptance in the profession.
I've been trying to find stuff on the internet about Dr. Yellow Fever and the Jive, they're this amazing funk-groove-dance type band based out of Halifax (I think. One assumes, as they play here a lot). So far, I've only turned up two links, one a paragraph blurb relating to a track they have on an indie compilation, and the other, an even shorter blurb in the Coast. Happily, I found a 40 second sound clip; this is Funk d'fied (mp3 file).

Current reads: - Deborah, Golda and Me: Being Female and Jewish in America, Letty Cottin Pegrebin. I have to admit, I'm reading this book because I'm going to be doing the camp counsellor thing at a Jewish camp in the states, but this is fabulous. I also have to admit that I'm new to most of it, like sexism in the Jewish faith (in practice, but not in ideology), and how bad anti-Semitism really is in the US, and in the feminist movement. Now here's something funny, on the back of the book, there's an accolade from the washington post: By the way, I love living in Canada. Plus, anti-Asian sentiment isn't too much of an issue here in semi-rural New Brunswick. But I do have to deal with all of the locals thinking I'm a Japanese exchange student. 'So, how are you enjoying your summer in Canada? It must be quite a change.' It gets tiresome. I get rude. - Life After God, Douglas Coupland. That nuclear holocaust bit disturbed me. Otherwise, it's just not as good as the other Coupland stuff I've read. I can't get into it, it's disjointed and doesn't have enough context for me (maybe that's the point?). and finally... From Key to Grape Ferns (Botrychium!): (opps, I typed 'bed' instead of 'bud' at first. that would make it a lot more interesting.) It doesn't help when I have to look up every second word.

White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh "I have met very few men who are truly distressed about systemic, unearned male advantage and conferred dominance. And so one question for me and others like me is whether we will be like them, or whether we will get truly distressed, even outraged, about unearned race advantage and conferred dominance and if so, what we will do to lessen them. In any case, we need to do more work in identifying how they actually affect our daily lives. Many, perhaps most, of our white students in the U.S. think that racism doesn't affect them because they are not people of color; they do not see "whiteness" as a racial identity. In addition, since race and sex are not the only advantaging systems at work, we need similarly to examine the daily experience of having age advantage, or ethnic advantage, or physical ability, or advantage related to nationality, religion, or sexual orientation." 3.28.2001

I tend to read a lot of books at the same time. - Where the Girls are, Susan J. Douglas. This is an absolutely fabulous book. It's about media portrayal of women - on TV, in movies, in the news (including media coverage of the feminist movement, which really gets me very mad). This was also my first exposure to the early days (well, 50's and on) of feminism in the US, something I hardly knew anything about until now. I started reading Greer's The Female Eunuch awhile ago, and I totally didn't know she was _that_ controversial. - Out of Poverty, John Stackhouse (of the Globe and Mail). It's a book I have to read for my Developing World class, and is pretty darn interesting. If you think the IMF's structural adjustments are where it's at, read this book. - Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls - read this on Thursday. I remember first hearing about them in a feminist art book. They're absolutely crazy, fun, and vital. I've seen some of their posters reprinted around campus lately, it was exciting. I wonder who's been putting them up. - Wild Swans: Three daughters of China, Jung Chang. Chang has a PhD in linguistics, and has mostly said only good things about communism so far. So it's looking good. No sob story, no 'my life royally sucked because of Communism before I was saved by a US soldier and brought to the blessed land' epic here - the narrative centres around smart, strong, gutsy women. - The Female Eunuch, Germaine Greer. It's taking me a really long time to read this. I don't always agree with everything she says (stuff about how similar men and women's bodies are), but she does bring up a lot of good points.

It's the coast online, Halifax's entertainment source. Does Halifax actually have a nightlife? Where is Halifax anyway? Looks like a night at the Attic, guys. Dawson's Creek on in... right now! The show isn't so good (kind of painful to watch sometimes), but I think I watch out of loyalty.

Bush Moves Against Abortion. Plus, he wants to open up new oil fields in Alaska, start a completely unfair anti-missile system, and considers US-Mexico relations far more important than US-Canada relations. It's not looking good.
Now doing a paper on the effect of AIDS in developing countries. Will probably try to look at it from a specific point of view, like its effect on women. For now, an article from the Globe and Mail: Fight against AIDS gains strong new voices.

I am super irritated by CNN's new redesign of its website. It's removed all of the direct links to different continents, instead, all of the world's news is on a single page, making it extremely difficult to browse all Asian news. I suppose I should have expected as much from a company so closely affiliated with Time Warner. It's only underlining the self-importance the US has for itself - which CNN is a huge supporter of. This may be the last straw. Closing night of my univ's musical (Kiss me Kate) was last night, but the website for the musical is still the one from two years ago. It's okay because I got to go to the cast party anyway. 1.24.2001

Welcome to the UN. It's your world. What a cheesy slogan! Not only that, but when you go to the website, you get a never-ending cascade of ad windows. What is this, UN.inc? [ahem] hot guy link #2. Check out the pic of him in tribal dress (opps, had to clean off my keyboard). 1.21.2001
I'm doing some research on the status of women in Polish society. Identities in Transition: Women and the Negotiation of Identity in Post-Communist Eastern Europe. I haven't read this yet, I really have to get home for supper. No, the US has not ratified the treaty. "The Convention, adopted in 1989 and now the most broadly ratified United Nations treaty... Deputy Secretary-General Louise Fréchette told the Assembly that achieving truly universal ratification of the Convention would be a fitting way to enter the new century. It was, therefore, a concern that the United States was one of the only two countries that had not yet ratified that pillar of human rights law.. as of August 1999, it had been ratified by 191 States... Although the United States had not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, its actions to protect and defend children clearly demonstrated its commitment to the welfare of children. The international community could remain assured that the United States stood ready to assist in any way they could to enhance and protect the human rights of children." So my question is, why haven't they ratified the treaty?
Nigerian may escape 100 lashes. I have a question - what exactly has to be done for a nation to ratify a treaty? I heard day before yesterday that the US has yet to ratify the UN convention on the rights of children. Is this true? I'm quite shocked, but not really, poor jaded me. My parents came today and brought me a wok! Horray! Making stir-fry tonight. Oh, the archive really isn't working right now (weep). 1.19.2001

My sister's Christmas present for me - we're like Charlie's Angels, only cooler because we don't rely on some mysterious paternalistic guy.
So the big question is, what am I going to do this summer? I'm thinking about working overseas. I've just been lazing around for the past week (which is fine by me... past month, really), but now it's going to get a lot busier. I think I'm going to be working in the lab again for the next month... it'll be grunt work, though. 1.12.2001

Here's a totally useful website, WHquestion. If you have a random question, and don't know who to ask, this is a good place to go. I've asked questions about how to revive my dying rosemary plant, where the best shopping is in San Francisco, and how to dispose of mercury (actually, a lot of the answers to that question were pretty bad... one guy told me to pour sulfuric acid on the mercury, so it would react and form a 'harmless mercuric sulfide.' Really now).

Horray! Home for Christmas. And now, in the spirit of all that is warm and fuzzy, a webcomic (guaranteed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy). ![]() In my... 3 days home, I have: - watched two movies, Naussica (Miyazaki is awesome as usual, but argh, so many bugs! It creeped me out), and Presumed Innocent. Hmm, didn't see that 'surprise ending' coming a mile away. - written the rough draft for my phil. take home. It's due tomorrow, yikes! - um, slept a lot. On the couch in the living room. Yup, I no longer have a bed in my own house, at the age of 20. - did some laundry. - not gone Christmas shopping on Saturday afternoon, on the advice of my family. - spent inordinate amounts of time on the internet. So sad! 12.6.2000
I haven't written for a long time, haven't I? Some numbers to note: exams start in 4 days and... argh, I have 4 exams in 2 days... I haven't started studying for 2 of them yet... why am I even here? Right, must get back to studying.

Martin Luther King Jr., wrote from his jail cell in Birmingham: "We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of bad people, but for the silence of good people" I urge you to go to wenholee.org and sign the petition to ask for a presidential pardon for Wen Ho Lee. Or better yet, call the White House at (202) 456-1111 (I'll be doing that once I get home this afternoon).

Went to see a house tonight. It was absolutely gorgeous! I think I was drooling a little bit (opps). The rent was decent, but unfortunately, you have to pay for all your electricity, oil heat, and water (they have metered water here, is that not weird?) and everything, which will make it far more than what we're paying now. Okay. There's this guy (Felando) running for assembly somewhere in California. He has some press releases on his page, and in typical American politician mudslinging form, it has the following quote: --------------------------- “This is not a karate championship. This is not a boot camp for Soldier of Fortune mercenaries. This is the California State Assembly, the people’s house. George Nakano was not elected to threaten and bully those who disagree with him. He was elected to represent the 53rd Assembly District’s constituents in a mature and professional manner. He is supposed to successfully carry legislation to benefit the district, but instead he chooses to antagonize the very colleagues whose support he needs to be an effective legislator.” “Its’ no wonder so many of his bills never pass.” “His nearly collapsing from chest pains raises serious questions about his ability to handle the rigors of an increasingly stressful, political cutthroat environment”, Felando stated. I don’t believe he can handle the stress of another term. Maybe it is time for him to hang it up and pursue a less stressful profession.” I couldn't resist. Here's my modified version (which I sent to him... he probably won't even see it): FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 11, 2000 “This is not a kindergarten playground. This is not a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan. This is the California State Assembly, the people’s house. Gerald Felando should not base the majority of his campaign on demonizing his opponent. He is running to represent the 53rd Assembly District’s constituents in a mature and professional manner. He is supposed to run his campaign ethically, but instead he chooses to antagonize the very voters whose support he needs to be elected.” “It's no wonder he put the photos of Reagan and Barbara Bush on his campaign page... he has nothing else to stand on.” “His supreme lack of moral ethic and his racist remarks in his campaign raise serious questions about his ability to handle the rigors of an increasingly diverse, open-minded, intelligent environment. I don’t believe he has the integrity to run for office. Maybe it is time for him to hang it up and pursue a profession that doesn't require as much maturity.” 10.8.2000
According to a recent test, joey has a lesbianity level of 45%, and 61% femme. Here's the analysis: Also, I'm 71% pure. That sounds about right. So I have to be writing an essay now. Right. 10.5.2000
This is a movie I really want to see: Bamboozled. "What are we as African Americans?" she asks. "Let's really examine how we are contributing to the projection of our own images of ourselves. What are we really willing to give up? Our integrity? The honor of our community, just for some money? " "You have to know your past, in order that your past not revisit you again," she said. "... It's Hollywood history, some of the images you see in the movie. That's the biggest problem in dealing with some of the racial issues in America: We all would wish to sit on it and forget about it, but that doesn't create a forum for healing." 10.4.2000
I'm writing an essay on the state of communism in China. So for your personal edification and better organization of my thoughts, relevant websites! China extends its restriction on freedom of thought and expression on the internet. Vast corruption in government officials. The state of China from different viewpoints:
I went in and talked to the international student advisor in person on Friday. Feeling a lot better about the whole thing. She's much more of a real person to me now, we shared experiences with racism, I asked if I could help with reachout to the community. It's all good, I think. I really wish I could confront someone without starting to cry. I used to think I was unemotional, now I believe I'm quite the opposite.

I think the 'B' in the Blogger logo looks like a rather comfortable chair. And hey, what's the title of this site? Joey's comfortable chair! Woohoo! This is just wonderful. Another tv season with white main characters and supporting minorities, just like the real world.

A-Bian is awesome. I actually met Linda Gail Arrigo while in Taiwan, at a DPP information session for young 'overseas Taiwanese' and others in Taipei held every summer. This article gives you an interesting perspective, it's written by a Caucasian woman who's lived in Taiwan all her life, and has been very much involved in politics (she helped found the Democratic Progressive Party, after all).

Profiles in Outrage : America is home, but Asian Americans sometimes feel treated as outlanders with unproven loyalties. It's the little things, like when standing outside of my friend's house, a group of 12 year old boys walking back to school from lunch, as soon as they saw me, began mock fighting, yelling 'judo-chop,' and, while walking my bike, a boy saying to me, slowly, 'you're cruisin.' When I gave him a Look, he says, 'You know, cruuisin.'' A friend's mother asked me how I liked Nova Scotia, I replied that I've lived here most of my life, I like it just fine. My landlord's brother asks me whether I can speak English well. I had just been talking to him. People have praised me for 'speaking English so well;' can't they tell? I speak no other language besides English, I even speak with a Nova Scotian accent. Or does my face somehow blur my words for them, does how I look somehow affect their hearing? I just wish I could shake off the daze that hits me whenever someone says something like that to me, the disbelief that yet again, someone has defined me as a foreigner, someone who just doesn't belong, and that for some reason, being Asian offers me up as a subject for ridicule. It's been over ten years since someone has straight out said a racial slur to my face, but it's the subtle things that make me angry, the things you can't exactly pinpoint. This is why I've never felt like I was home, how can a place be home to me unless the people around me also perceive it as my home? I am homeless.

Did anyone else see Brian William's interview with Olympic equestrian Lamaze this evening? My issue is not with Brian's opinion - although I believe that since cocaine couldn't improve his performance, and since we shouldn't pry into every private aspect of atheletes' lives (I'm against taking drugs, but that's his own personal choice, and he should be punished for taking cocaine as any normal person would be), that it was the right decision to lift his ban - but I have to say, Williams was being extremely unprofessional. He was grilling Lamaze. Asking him the same extremely critical questions again and again, only rephrasing them, it was so obvious that he was completely against Lamaze. If his intention was to turn the general Cdn public against Lamaze, I don't know... he certainly put me more on Lamaze's side. While I'm venting my opinions, the Barenaked Ladies apparently oppose Napster (which is too bad, they're one of my favorite bands, and I'm also very much pro-Napster (although the way they opposed Napster seems v. amusing).
9.15.2000
Oh my goodness, this time, censorship is going much, much too far. The Handmaid's Tale was amazing, and the Diary of Anne Frank? "We've had complaints about 'The Diary of Anne Frank,'" she says, "because it was, and I quote, 'a real downer.' Well yeah, I guess the Holocaust was a real downer. I'm under the impression that a lot of people censoring these books are delusional. 9.11.2000
Back at school! Fun and more fun, seeing everyone again, meeting new people (people are so eager to meet new people at this time of year, it's great). I just applied to be a college rep for a Magazine, despite the fact that there are what, 5 Asian-American/Canadians at my school? Oh well, might as well try. Book of the moment - Asian American Dreams, by Helen Zia. Highly recommended! Also, reading my roomie's feminist psychology textbook (I never said I'm not a geek), Women and Gender, by Mary Crawford. It's so very interesting and well written, just an introductory survey type book.

I've joined the grrl nrrd webring... although I'm not so much a tech/computer junkie kind of nerd (granted, I'm an internet junkie, although the kind that refuses to pay for anything; I'm even getting free internet access for goodness sake) as having a general nerd mindset.
This is absolutely fabulously funny. Napster's one of the best things on the internet, and you know what, I'm actually buying more CD's now than before it came out.

Horray! I've only spent 15 minutes on the internet today... *dance I'm so productive. Let's see, what's on the menu today... I'm now an anime superhero!!! My sister drew this awesome pic (granted, it was copied from a pic in Animerica) of me in this big kickass boots (15 minutes on internet is now turning to an hour... how easily this happens). It'll be up as soon as it's inked and scanned.
Why is no one ever on icq these days? pooh. I'm trying to pick some select webrings to join, so this blogging is not a pointless exercise. Oh yeah, and it's 3:44 am. I'm thinking about moving the webring links to the bottom of the page... if there's one thing I can't stand it's a cluttered website.

horray! parents have decided not to recarpet bedrooms! And now since I have so much free time, I can afford to goof off for awhile. (oh right, except that I promised myself I'd read 1 1/2 chapters - these chapters are long)
Oh my goodness, there's going to be an Asian-American television channel: AZN's mission is to show the world what it's like to be Asian American. The company plans to achieve this objective by producing, acquiring, and distributing high quality entertainment programs that capture the essence of the Asian American experience. AZNtv programs will be aired via UHF, cable television, and world-wide on the Internet. The broadcast launch is scheduled for May 2001. The work of Asian American artists is largely ignored by traditional media companies because the Asian audience in the United States is relatively small. Lucky for us, the audience in Asia is huge and growing rapidly. Asians want to watch programs about life in America, and we're gonna bring it to them. I've been watching some of the audition tapes for 'go w/the grain.' Um... I'll get back to you later on that. I think they're suffering from some bad script-writing. Wouldn't improv be better? Why's the station called AZN? I've always found that to be an annoying (what's it called, when they spell something wrong, and then everyone starts spelling it wrong... like doughnuts/donuts and drive-throughs/thrus). I have such hopes for this new proliferation of AA media... a magazine has already let me down somewhat (bought a copy in Pasadena), I hope that AZN doesn't do the same (not that I'm going to get to see it anyway, in Nouveau-brunswick.)
Never underestimate the importance of a comfy chair. I had something really interested written, and lost it in a very confusing way (clicked the italics button too many times, right-clicked it and went back too many times, then lost my entry altogether). Anyway, I can't duplicate it, so I'll just complain about what I have to do now - namely, box everything in my room up (even though I've already technically moved out, there's still a lot of stuff, dude), and bring it down to the basement. I wonder what's going on at the SURVIVORblog... I guess my addiction to /approval of this website means I'm tragically uncool. I was thinking about writing something for the yell-oh girls anthology, but couldn't think of anything to write... but I think it's because it's too early for me to write... about my experiences as an AA girl... because they're only just beginning.

2000-08-31 - 17:48:18 Here’s my dilemma – how can I be a feminist and a devotee to the Asian American cause at the same time? Complicated with the fact that I am a Christian? And how can I possibly decide which is more important to me, which should take precedence? On one hand, there are the human-rights abuses in China, and their notoriously terrible treatment of woman, their inferior position in society. Foot binding, men taking multiple wives and concubines, the favouring of boy babies over girls (and subsequent highly publicized and criticized abortions and abandonment of girl babies)... On the other hand, in Christianity, women are also inferior to men. In a Christian marriage, it is said that the woman must obey her husband, that his word is final in all decisions. Then there is also the Chinese American-Christian autobiography, which 'perpetuates and advances the sterotype of a Chinese culture so foul, so cruel to women, so perverse, that good Chinese are driven by moral imperative to kill it'[or the very least to revolt against it]. The image of China that we have here in North America - men as oppressors, women as the oppressed victims, which I have believed for so long because they're the only images I have, and only recently have been rethinking. Then there's the women's suffrage movement, much helped because of the 'alarming' increase of 'Chinamen' in the US. A certain leader of the suffregettes whose name I forget helped advance her cause by using the reasoning that, because the majority of the Chinese immigrants were men, giving women the vote would ensure that politics in the US were always in favour of the white majority. Writers like Amy Tan (who used to be one of my favorite writers) and Maxine Hong Kingston who rag on Chinese men, characterizing the majority of them as mysogonists. My guilt that being in love with a white man could mean that I think my race inferior, that I really do agree with Tan and Kingston.
2000-08-14 - 11:56:51 Yesterday: slept in and missed church again. It was my last chance this summer, feel really bad about that. Whiled away the morning, went shopping in Moncton (Evan and another girl were supposed to come, but could not find them... like to hear the story behind that)... late for frisbee, played a horrible game - could not catch for shit - watched the simpsons, malcolm in the middle... did not work on essay like I was supposed to, though it's just as well* really feel tired and out of it this morning. *prof wrote me back, and changed the topic of my essay! Slightly annoyed, although it's also good because it's a better topic now... I think I can actually write 5 pgs on this one. Howie wrote me back, so nice to be writing to him again. Have to run, many chores to do: (will list them so I will remember:) - buy textbooks for next year while used ones are still there and still have car - get Krista to open cage so can get furniture - start packing! horray! Hmm, actually, that isn't too much. lunchtime...
Yikes! Get ready for some fast blog-action. 2000-08-13 - 00:39:18 Admittedly, the main purpose of this journal is to sort my own life out... I just want to write down what happened on a particular day, what I was thinking about. I don't want to forget. It's not you, it's me. So, today, I woke up and watched Saturday morning cartoons with my boy (something about a sponge). Got my hair cut for the first time in a year, which was great. I was just like, wow. I should cut my hair more often. It has shape and everything. After you get your hair cut it is, of course, entirely necessary to walk around looking in every reflective surface, and constantly sweep your hair around. Studied at the coffeeshop all afternoon (difficult as people smoke and music is loud, but better than my apartment). Saw four friends come in, an asian couple, and a white girl-asian guy couple. V. exciting. It's always sort of thrilling now to see interracial couples. Then an asian girl-white guy couple walking down the street an hour later. Quite astounding for such a small town. Anyway, then some of my univ friends come in, they're up for the day, moving stuff into their house. Good to see them, it's been a long time. I miss the girls, really. Have lunch (v. late lunch), see their house, which is absolutely fucking huge. It's not typical student housing. It's this huge mansion, with crown molding, oak panelled walls, 7 entrances, antique furniture left behind, a jacuzzi and... ugh. I cannot believe they will only be paying $100 more a month than me. grr... but will not be envious. Somehow whiled away the evening on the internet, supposedly looking up stuff for my essay. The internet is great. Absolutely love it. Nowhere else can you find such a broad range of ideas, so many minds, so many different wonderful (and not so wonderful) people. Unfortunately, no online biography of Ida Pruit. May have to actually go to the library and find a real book for that. Imagine.
I have just been wasting the days ever since I got back from California. Now every once in awhile, I get a scare, remember how absolutely precious life is, and vow to myself not to waste time, not to waste my life away. But what do you know? I'm in bed at 4 in the morning, sleep until 12, and spend much of the day reading and on the internet (granted, I'm usually doing something 'constructive' like checking out a magazine or writing email.) Hmm... Man, check this out. Great, I'm now addicted. But this has to be better than the show (although I swear I've never seen it). I'm moving my webjournal over from diaryland.com to here... believe me, this place is much better. But I wouldn't want you guys to miss out, I'll post the older entries here somehow... *glaring lack of HTML knowledge |
