so finally cleaned up my work computer, got everything working again in tip-top shape. while backing everything up beforehand though, i found an mp3 recording of a party i went to in 1999 (specifically Spree & Ian's tag team from "True Luck" in Springfield). i havent listened to happy hardcore pretty much since then (except at the gym), but this mp3 instantly transported me back to that time.
it's a funny thing in retrospect. it was a funny year. it was the first year i made way more money than i could possibly know what to do with, it was the year "y2k" was more popular than jesus, it was the year many of my friends started dropping more than 200 dollars a week on going out to dinner. it was the year you could (and were expected to) have blue hair at your place of business, and it's the first year i dyed my hair an unnatural color. it was the year an mTV VJ proclaimed his love of happy hardcore, and the year futuristic rave fashions could be bought at emporio armani.
a few tableau for myself:
i was on a business trip in philadelphia. i walked into a moschino store on south street, which had been redone to look like an industrial futuristic space. all the sweaters were more than 200 dollars. i seriously considered buying one (to match the star wars prada boots i had just purchased). the mid-40s sales clerk came over and praised my outfit (futuristic lithium rave gear) as being "so millenial." she suggested i might find cooler stuff across the street. i noticed they had a 200 dollar knockoff of the 30 dollar shirt i had bought the year before.
i dyed my hair platinum and butched out. i wore leather pants to a job interview. i got the job.
i started saving money "in case of a market correction"; i sold all of my tech stock and bought philip morris.what do these things have to do with one another? i guess i think about that party, full of crackhead teens and 20-somethings, dancing at 180 bpm, screaming euphorically and completely hedonistically, and for me, it seems like the whole world was....
perhaps certain of it's own demise. perhaps it was that it seemed like everyone knew that the ride couldnt last much longer, whether it be due to a "market correction" or a bug in a computer. but it seemed like no one really cared. the prevailing feeling was that you should woop it up while you could, pretend that nothing was awry, and smash as fast as you could into whatever was in front of you, because why not. the cult of the "new new thing" has been overwhelmed by the 80s retributions, uncomfortable shoes, punk 80s do's and a certain sense of "oh well, back to the real world, kids".
maybe the party girl is gone. went out friday night to hear kenwood denard and tube play with a tabla player and indian singer, but as they went on first and didnt play so long, we ended up heading home early.
met a friend of j's i had not before, which was interesting. i took an immediate dislike to him, partially for foolish biased reasons (long, unkempt hair; cross-legged sitting on the floor; resemblence to someone unfortunate; etc), partially for intuitive distaste with word choice, lack of lucidity, and a strange vibe he was sending my way. i later found out from j. that the strange vibe had a lot to do with the web of their strange sexual history (fully the three of them).
my interaction with n had greatly improved however. j posited that this had to do with my letting her know that i was 'one of the family'. i always find this a little off-putting. i give in to it, of course, in the name of smoothness. but at the same time, i always think less of people for that reason.
not that i should. i understand that when people must edit themselves, they may feel discomfort. ive been there myself. but sadly, my gut reaction to that sort of bias is to run fast in the opposite direction. what i _really_ want to do is to play the conventional to their oddity. if only to poke and prod them into liking me despite it. me, 1:37 PM
the expected end came to a brewing situation. it feels secretive, although it need not be for any reason except that i feel strange having done it. like all bad things, it felt great while doing it, almost because it contained the element of the taboo.
i dont have anything too interesting to say about it i guess. only that i should know better. everyone save me seemed to know it was going to happen, so i got to play the fool. me, 1:37 PM

in all my literary fury, i dont think i ever told you what happened this weekend.
it was a bit fubared from the start. ride to nyc fell through; chinese express was full up; missed gnotorious; brother octaboy had invited a bunch of friends, based on my recommendation of the dj lineup, which was switched upon arrival; the club was, as expected, a B&T nightmare; finances were tight due to transportation costs and having to pay to get in unexpectedly, so la had to front me; octaboy's friend's car was towed; and on and on.
be that as it may. la is beautiful, cool, smart, hip, and a sweatheart to boot. a visit to singsing would be a blast, were she around. i hadnt seen octaboy in a while, and it strikes me that our relationship gets better and better. cat had a bbq and all the people there were expectedly hip and unexpectedly nice. cat somehow found a beautiful apartment with a back yard, so it was a very chill saturday night, a nice counterpoint to the crazy -fly night before. had brunch with la and another bostoner, fun as well, and with grits.
so all in all, i was a little burned out from stress, but im glad i went.
got home and had a continued odd interaction with the boy who lives next to me. i know better, so i wont. monday night, had chai with a new friend, someone who's been going through some trials. apparently even interacting with me brings him difficulty. i was harsher than i would have wished otherwise; you know my gig. i have such difficulty being anything but blatantly me, opinionated, terse, unforgiving. i think i must have been a dictator in a former life. all words emerge as dicta.
he says he likes this style. it's likely novel now, but such things grow old.
and after, had dinner with prada. plip. there goes my every brave resolve. but in the end, even after emoting more than i ever would confess later, i managed to remain discrete. not dissociated, perhaps, but at least discrete. and last night, shakespeare and strawberries. me, 11:52 AM

and the thing is, i cant even figure out if borges is antithetical to my personality (what a horribly mariah thing to say).
on one hand, he completely fixates on content. you know my feelings on content. after reading berkeley and frege a few years ago, my intuitive disdain for content (or perhaps _artful_detail_ would be a better way to express that) became a hard-edged sword, slaying the weak artful charmers. of course i know that content is not anti-thetical to form, but i do find it gets in the way, and frequently obscures the underlying structure, lulling observers to miss the real beauty if there is any.
but it isnt necessarily so. the dutch masters lull their audiences with charming, story-wrought pictures. in their case though, the stories are so banal, the characters so common, that the observer would be bored if only looking at the content. and so the structure jumps out and kisses you on the face, like so many rays of dutch window-light.
borges both eradicates the content (by making the fiction itself unimportant), but obscures his mode of content as well.
my suspicion is that i do not understand enough about his oeuvre to understand the tricks he's pulling out. i am wanting study, it seems clear. perhaps i have found contrapuntal literature at last. me, 11:52 AM
ive been slowly winding my way through borges 'ficciones', after many years of hearing how much it would suit my personality (a bit of a turn-off recommendation, if there ever was one). i inhale books usually, but it's taken me three weeks to read 75 pages. read a review, spend a few days considering, reread, look up references, simmer, read again. serious.
for those of you unfamiliar, ficciones is a collection of reviews, of fictitious books (that is, books that do not exist). apparently he felt as tom tounsend in 'metropolitan' did.
"I don't read novels. I prefer good literary criticism -- that way you get both the novelists' ideas and the critics' thinking. With fiction I can never forget that none of it ever really happened -- that it's all just made up by the author."
of course, borges is a rather bizarre twist on that (and who am i to compare borges to something that is so pop and post-dated?).
anyway. so this book is totally rewiring my head. i just re-finished borges review of a 20th century french author's "don quixote".. not _a_ don quixote, but _the_ don quixote, cervantes 17th century spanish classic. that is, as borges describes it, the modern french author learned archaic spanish, forgot 3 hundred years of history, became a soldier... all so that he could write don quixote, word for word, having become a 17th century spanish novelist.
a clever trick, but not worth noting, at least without borges next song and dance. after describing some of the difficulties of such a task, borges then quotes both cervantes and the french novelist, he quotes the exact same passage between the two of them (twice, mind you) and then goes on to explicate why the two are completely different.
i cant really do it justice. suffice it to say, i would recommend to any of you that you take a gander, if only for that one story. it's completely fubared me. me, 11:52 AM

what's amazing is how incredible it feels to be appreciated without the slick distractedness of my jaded peers. my older friends who are stable, married, settled, done (in a certain way) look jealously on the vibrancy of my life, and the younger friends who are green, and without the benefits of the experiences my life has bestowed, luckily, upon me ... to them i seem old and experienced, educated and stable. it makes me wonder if it is simply easier to be honest with people who are not solidly in your demographic. this gives me a certain amount of hope actually. every experience ive had has impressed on me how critical the mask of slick is. maybe when you eradicate the potential complications of the peer-group, you may begin more confidently enjoying others. is it competition? sex? what is it that makes people my age so tiresomely hidden?
the conversation last night was mainly one-sided. from the height of my soap-box, i saw the smile and heard encouragements. and how long has it been since i felt listened to, on subjects i cared about? maybe my last visit with trouble. or talk with the angel. i dont assume it will last long, but i will beam as long as the brights are shone this way.
by the way, i may end up switching to a new livejournal site; ive been missing the blogvoices functionality and i dont feel like running php. me, 6:03 PM

this one's for especial, a funny on the junglist massive. me, 4:55 PM
at the same time, news from defcon makes me think i should retreat into my formerly hermetic lifestyle. clearly, my ego is one of my major weaknesses. im too tired to start my tract on supressing desire, but you've heard it all anyway. all my love to seymour. me, 3:45 PM
i thought i could organize freedom. how skandinavian of me.
she picked up the message even before i knew i was sending it. i thought of intercepting it after i realized, but the rift of recovery would have been more jarring than the potentially un-received message itself. i was at once amazed at her perceptiveness and disappointed at her inability to take control. and though i dont think she precisely understood which aspect of this control was important to me, she understood in a general sense much more than i would have, were i her.
i have always understood the strengths and weaknesses of people, even before they became overtly apparent. i feel in some deep way what i can expect of people, and it has made me, for the most part, a relatively undramatic person. if you know what to expect of others, there is little reason to ever be angry or upset at them. they simply carry out the expectations you already have. still, i hopefully doubt my ability to do this. i tell myself that i couldnt possibly understand people all that well, and that i should expect the best of people so that they have a fair chance. i give the people in my life a certain carte blanche, in hopes that they will rise to the possibility that bestows. and when the seemingly inevitable happens, i stop seeing the person in front of me in any sort of real way, and in my eyes they begin to get folded into my person-mapping-architecture. the change is nearly instant. it's as though my eyes go from being cameras, recording data without corrections or interpretations, to being mapping devices, interpreting all terrain in terms of the abstract topographical outlines of expectation. the world becomes a mondrian.
disappointment, though in some ways inevitable, is not helpful. and so i turn off the cameras entirely, and allow the reaching fingers of idea relationships to grow organically through me. in the null space where input streams had previously deposited their wares, the angles grow. the angle of repose happens. me, 12:35 PM

(i love the dj on ukrumble right now; he's dancing along.. gotta love a dj who has a good time with his bad self.) 1369 last night became the mariah fan club, which was not at all bad. i enjoyed the company quite a lot, although it's a tossup as to whether they looked or sounded prettier. had a great time with a new friend, and a cozy little time at that. seems we have a lot in common, a lot of similar ways of looking at the world.
AND. when we got to the landing, i ended up meeting a new girl. turns out i wrote something on bp about the proper london/LA stylee thing and it made her laugh. man, there's no greater thing then knowing people are actually paying attention as much as i feel like i do. so after commiserating on prada knock-offs (thank you lithium) and invisible social barriers, she ended up telling me about yoga.
ok, so just so you all know, i am completely biased against fitness trends. yoga's like the worst (although i took a couple of classes of it in college), because it combines the fitness trend fervor with the image i have in my head of lactose- and humor- free lithe girls doing it. (why is it that humor so frequently goes with things that are bad for you?) anyway, im horribly biased, so shoot me. but lc (the girl at the landing) was so nice and happy about it, she very nearly convinced me that i should start going. i think.. i think... maybe i will. but dont tell anyone, it will sully my sullen reputation for sure.
so tonight im heading to the mfa for their friday-night pick-up joint. if y'all are around tonight, ill probably be there between 6 and 9. stop by for the party, kids.
might end up going to new york earlier than the expected friday night next week.

Thursday, Boston's own trouble plays a free party at BarB, 188 Allen street, between houston and stanton, along with other 2step and jungle djs. friday, as you know, is gnotorious playing with the stanton warriors at centro-fly. that's a can't miss. their remixes are almost all my favorite songs, no lie.
ok, so he used the word "irregardless" yesterday. does this bother any of you as much as it does me? or am i just a ridiculously anal person? you can be honest. go ahead. tell me im absurd. also, just so you know, i love you all. smoochy love and take care and have a good weekend! me, 4:05 PM

sixfootRetard for not updating/mailing/calling/whatevah. i know he's busy, but what about the alleged july party? he gets to crash mine, i dont get to crash his? bastard.
basement jaxx for writing so many fuXing catchy tunes, which i cannot stop listening to
troubler indeed for being so charming and forgiving and making me feel like i should be living in nyc RIGHT NOW.

my life is communism; everything feels equal.
on the other hand, the party on saturday near MIT was kickin'. walked in with mungie j. and j's little lady. the space was beautiful, industrial, although apparently people live there. one of the residents, mungie found out (she always manages to find the best person to know in the room), is an electrical engineer, who did the fantastic lighting, LED signs, et al. djs were all more or less unlocked groove folks. and the crowd was a mix of beautiful glam and glam geek. danced a bit, but spent most of the night in the second room, sitting on a couch, sparring with a boy.
friday was a little less glam. got blown off by a boy i was supposed to hang out with. wasnt that big a deal actually, since ive been a little ambivalent on such things anyway. so j and i went to harvard square to other music and drooled on the coolie other music boys. deb was working, so we chatted for a bit. she and greg schiff it appears are moving to nyc in the fall. just like everyone. any takers on betting how much longer i'll be here? serious. ended up splurging on music:
dj cam loa project
goldie timeless
everything but the girl (that one compilation)
basement jaxx rooty
amon tobin bricolage
dmitri from paris dj mix
praxis mold
autechre confield
dj doc martin dub mix
i got home and realized that it was all sex music. "deep" house galor. it makes sense though. was on a wild pheromone high friday. j laughed at me the whole way home, after two cars slowed down to look at us, and after a very immodest trip to diesel. i dont get it really, as i was dressed kinda dikey. still, it was a nice thing after getting blown off.
so just so you know, if you want to hang this week, ill be at fragment tonight for ian's oldskool set, tomorrow will be at the lizard lounge for livetronica, wednesday i will more than likely be at p.l. (unless i lose my mind and decide to go to area:one instead), same on thursday, then ill be at the day party at MIT on saturday afternoon. and if i can still pick my feet up, i may try to go on the redlight boat cruise on sunday night. we'll see though.
the new basement jaxx = yummy! i believe theyre playing at axis this thursday. if mungie has her way, i may ditch elements. me, 11:05 AM

i had been meaning to tell you, i updated the site to include a guestbook, which you will find in the right nav bio section. thanks, mom, for always making me feel loved. me, 10:55 AM
tuesdays at the lizard lounge: not bad. i usually avoid maxx haze productions, because he's so dodgy, but i couldnt resist another opportunity to hear tube and kenwood dennard play a live set. would have been better if i could have danced, but nevertheless. i was expecting it to be a more idm/berklee-heavy crowd. instead the room was packed with self-important d&b djs. eeeeee!
ran into lenore, completely incidentally, which was fantastic. i think d. was sketched by our interaction, but i suppose he's accustomed to my randomness by now. she was supposed to go to defcon, but to no avail. dot-busted apparently. felt sketchy yesterday, so stayed home, slept, chatted with my roommate, did chores. took a sad m. out to dinner last night. he's been down about his finances, so thought a little algerian nosh might be good.
not feeling too creative today. supping with r. tonight... he's a cool guy, but belies his militaristic upbringing. i always feel slightly bemused when we hang. ive had the ed case refix of gorillaz "clint eastwood" going through my head ad infinitum over the last week. ive been whiteboarding like mad at work. me, 2:15 PM

i have this bizarre desire to address personally people who visit my website whom i dont know. for example, there were some folks from CA checking us out at 2 am on a monday night, and i just want to say, at 2am, you should be sleeping or clubbing or cramming. stuff like that. (although admittedly, i was hanging out in front of a club last night, checking out the young d&b boy pr0n after the club; pathetic, i know.) or what did the person who was searching for rich feynmann think? the weirdest thing about having a website like this is that it is all one-way. it makes me realize what a dictator i am. me, 1:23 PM
after much hemming and hawing all summer, finally made it to fragment at great scott in allston. you know the usual story... "but allston... it's so _far_. i dont have a car. it's just drum&bass. i see all the same people on _thursday_." etc etc.
but it was fun. p. called me last night in search of a non-drag-show club night (shades of growing up in ohio... only two decent clubs, both gay clubs, one the eurotechnotrash Bret's, the other, the sleazy burlesque cracked out Caeser's), so we headed, after much getting lost (what? the other side of the river you say? say it aint so) and finally made our way into your typical allston frat bar. the bouncers both had ties. at the bar? guiness guiness guiness. there was even a picture of _doug_flutie_ on the wall! from when he was at BC! isnt that too perfect? had one of those quick moments of remembering mississippi, where the juke joints all had pictures of jesus or 70s colt 45 ads on the wall. for ambience. indeed.
anyway, all my excuses were perfectly right, but it was fun nevertheless. re-ran into/talked to the brandnubass boys, whom id met at clampants party. it was really awkward for a moment though because i was talking to matt (aka mateo) for a while and we were doing the whole "do you know this person? i hang out with that person," thing, all the while with me not realizing/remembering he was a brandnubass kid. these youngsters. they all look alike! but he was charming about it when it came up. you know how it goes though. these people, they come and go. i think back to all the people ive ever known in the 'scene' and the number of people who've come and gone, and then i think about how soon it will be before i go on to whatever the future will bring.
also walked into the lions den there. saw londonboy, who was sitting with scotty, and that whole crew. we ended up almost immediately getting into a heated argument about UK garage v. d&b. it was actually a bit fun. he was quite heated, all "these terrible UKG djs, they should just fuck off!" admittedly, garage djs are just horrible, really the worst. but as i dont really think there's much art in (at least most) djing, i dont care about that so much. it's just really good music. but i was attacked by the whole crew of them. it wasnt so bad. they were just cult-ing out, which i understand a bit. they have so much invested in d&b, they hate the idea of it being supplanted.
was nice to hang with p. he's such a great person to go to clubs with. he just gets it. me, 11:20 AM

there's really too much to go into now, but here are a few unusual things that happened this weekend:
ran into my little sister from college at clampants' party. she's ARTSY!
spent a drunken evening at charlie's kitchen with a boy i used to know and a bunch of people who reminded me of people i grew up with (remember the straightedge shows back in the day? hoodies before they had a name, ripped up fishnets, trips to the college town to pick up NaNa's, chipped off fingernail polish, two-tone lipstick, bands with names like "Majority of One" (moo for short) and best of all band stickers all over everything)
drooled on a hottie saxophone player at the brunch. it was the shoes that did it.
resisted temptation to quote along while watching heathers
first things first: go check out my article in the boston globe: 2-steps Closer To America. it's a flawed article for sure... a friend kindly pointed out all of them for me (thanks, baby).
i know ive been remiss this week. so much has happened, i just havent been around. defensiveness aside, here's the story.
i already told you about the mouse on mars show. it was insane. it was wonderful. so tuesday night, drove down to nyc with m., who was going to visit his friend for the night. needless to say, insane car ride. screetching saxaphone music, accident on the highway (SUV-driving crackheads), screaming conversation, windows open, double-fisting cigarettes (not me, him), jimmy smith at too many decibles.. and on and on. we arrived around 11:30, he dropped me off at octaboy's, i phoned trouble, who couldnt make it, as it happened. but i'll hopefully be seeing her this weekend, so ain't no thang. we headed to chelsea pier, and what do we see but countless hootchie mama pu tang. eeeeee! it was so grotesque. VPL everywhere. just to give you some context, i used to go to the frying pan last summer when they began the first 2step weakly in new york. it was actually a lot of fun, a mixed crowd, down-to-earth people, overlooking the river, outside. the soundsystem sucks, but anything outside is just going to be terrible like that.
then i went to london, and was awe-struck by the attitude and uncomfortable clothes.
so showing up this summer to find the hootchie in full force was a little depressing. but turned out there was another event the same night, right next to the frying pan, and the crowd at the frying pan was pretty much exactly like the one last summer, only there were more of them. nice to see that 2step is finally making inroads, but that it hasnt lost it's hominess to the crazy coked-out feel of london.
and then there was zed bias.
dood. im not usually one to run on about this or that dj, but i was fully surprised at how decent a dj he was. he kept it all pretty breakbeat, which can be a little over-much for too long, but his skills were just fine and he managed to keep the action going for a good long time. plus, he played a lot of stuff that i hadnt necessarily heard and stuff that i had heard but not so much. there were only a few anthems, and i thought they were pretty well-placed. all in all, this was the best 2step party ive been to. i think the emma feline show had a better moment (dinesh's set during that show was so on-point, i wanted to cry), but i was quite impressed with this one.
hanging with octaboy was also great. it's always nice to have someone to dance with who you dont have to worry about getting clingy or weird, someone who can take care of himself. we chatted a bit, which was nice.
so near the end of the night, i espy the most beautiful man ive ever seen. he looked a lot like the guy in that tanqueray ad, the tall black guy in the yellow suit sitting on a couch. he was pretty london stylee too, in a suit and a crazy shirt, and all smooth and stylish. it was a little dark, so i wasnt sure, but it appeared that he was checking me out. i couldnt see though, so i just kept dancing. the people on the bench in front of where i was dancing, they left, and he made a b-line for the bench. so i sat down next to him, and said "i was wondering when you would come over and dance with me." go ahead, i know it, im a super cheeseball. i winced even while i said it. he begged out, saying he just wanted to watch me dance, but we ended up chatting. turns out he owns a women's clothing store, goes to london quite frequently, and is friends with the woman who was responsible for bringing most of the big acts over here.
im so obnoxious. she came over, and i totally ignored him and started talking to her. what a horrid opportunist i am.
anyway, the club was closing up shop so i got his digits. didnt get much sleep at all, woke up and went to brunch with j., j. and m. had really great grits, and ganged up on m., much to his chagrin. we flew back to boston, i got back in time to go to the dancehall party at anthony's which was _great_. his mother was in town cooking up a mess of jamaican food, and the dancehall was flowing. then went to martha's, and actually had quite a nice time. everyone was there and i managed to chat with a couple of people. hung out mostly with prada and woosh. you know how it goes. i get caught up so easily it scares me. had dinner with he and h-m last night again, and it was lovely.
anyway, im headed off to the city again tonight to hang with trouble. i cant wait to see her. she's such a super sweetie, and im looking forward to seeing cornelius (the hot guy from the club) again.
im out of steam on the post kids. sorry. im tired just thinking about the last week. me, 1:33 PM

zed bias show in the apple tonight, frying pan, chelsea piers. it's where the kids'll be. mouse on mars, late night last night, too bling bling for the venue. if you missed it, it was hella hot. loose ends, loose for a year now, finally came to fruition last night. there's so much to say, i cant even remember how much, just from last night. me, 3:14 PM
