We (Jim and Sally) joined Cox Fitness Center yesterday, had a health assessment, received help with a fitness program that meets our personal needs and that will help us reach our goal . . . Mt. Rainier in 14 months. We were impressed with Cox. They were very helpful. We decided to work out early morning before work . . . the fitness center is less crowded, and we have more energy in the mornings. We will be doing 30 minutes cardiovascular exercises 3-5 days per week and weight bearing exercises 2-3 days per week.

I am excited about the climb but also a little apprehensive because I am definitely afraid of heights.

Sally has made initial contact with Joe, one of our brothers who lives in Washington. Joe and his wife Cindy have been trying to find the time to climb to camp Muir. Joe is interested in climbing to the base camp and believes that Cindy will be interested in a summit trip. We're planning a conference call in the near future to discuss.

Subject: Motivation!!

The chapel speaker this morning used an interesting illustration . . .
talking about spiritual motivation, of course, but I was thinking more of a
physical problem . . . being physically out of shape the way I am.

He was asked to join a group to climb Mt Kilimanjaro . . . or how ever you
spell that . . . as a fund-raiser thing. He knew he would never be able to
do it in his present condition, so he began to diet and exercise. He began
feeling quite well. For some reason he had to back out the climb. Several
months later he realized that he had quit exercising and eating right . . .
beginning on that day when he lost his motivating factor . . . the climb.

It made me think about the time we climbed (a little ways) up Mt Ranier. I
thought I was going to have a heart attack that day . . . I probably would
if I were to attempt that climb today. I am getting really, really bad. We
talked about going back and climbing it again sometime . . . maybe even
going further up. Are you interested in planning something like that next
summer . . . or the next summer?

. . . just a thought.

How did it all start? Well, Sally heard a motivational lecture from someone who had planned a mountain climb and thought it would be a great way for us to get motivated to get into shape. However, Sally was thinking more along the lines of 'hike in the woods'. So, when we discussed it, I up'd the ante. If we're going to get motivated toward a goal, then that goal ought to be pretty amazing...so let's plan to summit Mr. Rainier.
