america -- as a nation -- is way obsesssed with weight. i don't think i'm going out on a limb saying that. stand at a supermarket checkout and you'll see a cornucopia of headlines featuring the newest diet trend on the magazine stand. turn on your television and it's all the talk shows can, well, talk about. even legit news magazines keep yakking about weight loss. then, there are the studies after studies on obesity and its effects on health. the latest one says obese people invite greater health risks than smokers and drinkers. i don't care if it's a greater or lesser risk -- IT'S STILL A HEALTH RISK!!!
fast-food companies are not making it easier for people to avoid the temptation of gorging on greasy food, though. everything is being supersized -- add a measly quarter and you get 10 pounds more of this high-calorie beef! a nickle more and we'll give you a sackful of these oily fries! then there's the advertisement for a fast-food chain that closes really late so people can drop in for a snack. oh yeah, stuff yourself late at night and then sleep. let's see what that does to your heart. to think i used to like that white old guy (even if his line delivery really tanks). 'thought he looked like my grandfather.

earlier this evening, i came across a photo of a filipino priest celebrating mass in basilan. it was a nice, ordinary photo which i would have ignored if not for the caption. it said the priest carries something else aside from a bible and other accoutrements of his faith -- a pistol. the caption went on to say that in violence-prone basilan, a gun-carrying man of the cloth is not such a strange sight.
what's up in basilan, you ask? it's been a favorite haunt of the muslim separatist group, abu sayyaf. the group has been getting a lot of ink lately because of their brazen abduction of some 20 people from a resort -- filipinos and 3 americans. the number of captives has since grown. the group took more hostages as they shot their way out of a military siege.
filipino newspapers have been calling them rebels but i refuse to award them such a title. from what i've seen, their actions aren't the least bit noble and i seriously question their motives. they have said their kidnapping activities are a means to fund a movement calling for a separate muslim state in the philippines. hello?!?!?! you can't win people to your way of thinking by abducting and beheading innocent bystanders -- even if they are "imperialist americans" (btw, that term "imperialist" is so old it's full of mold) and even if they belong to other faiths. all you are doing is showing the world what a bunch of merciless thugs you are.

i was channel surfing late last night -- or maybe it was early this morning, sorry, can't tell anymore -- and this irish film on bravo caught my eye. titled "the closer you get," the film is set in a small Irish town. the story begins when the unmarried male inhabitants of the town decide to change their collective romantic luck by placing an ad in a Miami newspaper inviting women to come join them at the town's annual st. martha's day dance. however, their plan stirs up quite a reaction from the local unmarried women. it was a funny film but my enjoyment of it was dimmed by this one scene. the women get hold of the letter with the ad and talk about the men's foolishness. one of the women asks who would come in response to an ad from strange men from another country. the answer: filipinos.
comedian rodney dangerfield has a running shtick: i can't get any respect. well, rodney, old pal, step aside. let me introduce the people who really don't get any respect -- filipinos.

i probably should write something deep and introspective by way of introduction but my brain is kinda clogged right now by the pepsi ditty as interpreted by the navel-baring britney spears. you know, there's something really disturbing about that commercial. wanna take a guess which part makes me want to revisit my dinner? it's not the music and it's not britney. it's the image of former presidential candidate bob dole nodding and smiling at the britney extravaganza on tv and going "down, boy" to the dog at his side. eeeewwwww!
speaking of commercials that make you go eeeewwwww, anybody seen the snapple commercial about fruits intermingling? i thought it was cute at first until the guy opens door to reveal a fruit (i forgot what kind) peeling a lemon, then there were the two fruits in the vibrating bed, another pair of fruits in a hot tub and yet another pair channeling burt lancaster and deborah kerr in that classic scene from here to eternity. can you say 'disturbed'?
