Mirabile Dictu

Mirabile dictu means "wonderful to tell." I just learned it yesterday, and already I'm using it. How impressive. Now you can read my rants and raves. Heh.

Send mail to me.

Well, it was a purging weekend. I got rid of a bunch of stuff, most of which wasn't even mine, but was left by my friends after we had a yard sale. I got rid of my incredibly crappy bed, which is a relief. My mom is buying me a new one. Thank goodness. I don't know how much longer I could have gone. I've never had a brand new, brand name bed before. This will be nice.

So everyone at work finally knows I'm leaving. I have no regrets or second thoughts. I'm so glad to get out. So glad to feel as though I'm finally doing something, instead of just drifting with the status quo. Of course, we'll see how I feel about it all when I'm bogged down with hundreds of pages of management texts to read....

I've started getting headaches rather frequently. I can't tell why. I'm thinking it's either allergies or stress. Allergies doesn't seem as likely because they started appearing suddenly and don't seem connected to any other symptoms. I think stress may be a stronger possibility.

The stress comes from the fact that I am going to give three weeks notice next Monday. My boss is going to be so damn pissed. And I have so much stuff to do by then. I'm hoping it won't be a huge deal, because I just don't want to deal with it. Besides, if they get real bitchy with me, it's only going to hurt them because I won't be inclined to help them train a new person if they get shitty with me.

It's also stressful because I"m not yet 100% sure that everything is going through. I still need to talk to financial aid and make sure I'll get my pathetic little amount of money. And I need to talk to my school to make sure I can indeed go in fall.

But before I go, I've got to write a 5 page article and edit and lay out a 16 page newsletter. And do everything for the next issue. And take over proofreading duties. And be temporary webmaster while the webmaster is on vacation. So that's why I'm stressed. Too much to do in such a short time to do it. And they don't even know I'm quitting yet. That will be so hard. But hell, I've quit smoking cigarettes. NOthing will ever be as hard as that.

But on the bright side, only three more weeks of work! Woo hoo!

I feel like ranting and raving a little today. So I got into grad school. Yay. But now I find out that I'm not getting much money. I'm gonna be so damn poor. It's gonna suck. I was counting on getting $18500 a year, and now i find out I'm only getting $14900. That is not a huge difference, but to someone as poor as I'm gonna be, it's a big difference.

Well, I'm sure that no one wants to read about someone bitching about money. I think there's quite enough of that in the world at large as it is.

So I'll bitch about something else. I have this old, shitty Mac at work. It sucks. So the computer person was going to come by this one day and take out the damn PC card, which makes it even slower (we're talking a full minute to load a frickin' web page), and which doesn't work anyway. Does she take the PC card out? NO. What does she do instead? She DELETED MY FUCKING BOOKMARKS. Fucking bitch. She apparently saw them, realized that not many have to do with work, and deleted all of them except the work-related ones. Keep in mind that this is the bookmarks file that I've had for a few years now, that I add to as necessary. And she, without telling me of her intentions, took it upon herself to delete the bookmarks. What's more, I outrank her anyway! She had no say to mess with something other than what she was supposed to mess with.

Good thing I keep about a gazillion backups of my bookmarks, eh?

Ok, now it's time for a list. We'll call it
Things I won't miss about my job
Slow, obsolete Macintosh
Big flowery dresses
Writing boring, mundane prose about people I wouldn't like in the first place
Deadlines (I know, I'll have them in school, but it'll be different)
My stuffy, windowless office
The attitude of most of the women here (why do they think they are so important?)
The vending machine
Driving to work
Pantyhose
The fake smiles I must wear at events
8 a.m. arrival time
Selling ads (how did I end up doing this?)
Macintosh (it deserves a second mention)
Gobs of junk food because it's always someone's birthday

OK, I think that just about wraps it up. Now, to be fair, I should make a second list:

Things I WILL miss about my job
The money
The perks
The status
Hmmmm. I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for playing.

I got accepted to graduate school. That is great, but now there are two things weighing heavily on my mind. One is that I'm supposed to take statistics BEFORE I enroll in the program. I haven't done that. I don't know how flexible they are with that. I really hope they don't tell me I HAVE to take it first, because then I'll have to stay at my job. The second thing weighing on me is that it is going to be so hard to tell my boss I'm leaving. She loves me. I only started last September and essentially promised them that I'd stay at least a couple (few?) years. C'est la vie. But my boss really likes me. It's kind of freaky. She is my mother's age, and has almost adopted me. You can see why I'd want to leave. She asked me if I would go out with her divorced son when he came to visit. She brings me old dresses of hers that she doesn't want anymore. Big, flowery, gaudy dresses that old women with big hair that work in universities wear. Not me. I don't want to become that kind of person (another reason to go!). Last Halloween, she asked me if I wanted to come over to her house to hand out candy. Uh, no thanks. After I had a cold which turned into a nasty ear infection, she hugged me throughout the day. Get me the fuck away from this! I don't want to turn into a Prunella type!!

Anyway, you get the picture. But she is going to be so disappointed. And I'll have to face that for the three weeks I'll still be here. Now I have to call my school and hope that I can take stats my first semester. Keep your fingers crossed. I don't have much more room for big lady flowery dresses.

Bored? Bored enough to watch corn grow? I am, but then again, I'm at work.

I just sat down and figured out what my schedule will be like when I"m a fulltime master's degree student. I'll be in class 10 hours a week. Man, after years in the real world, I"m psyched. It'll suck to be poor, but I can't wait to quit my job.

This is really funny. Although I am normally much too high-minded to pay attention to what celebrities do, I'm making the exception today. Besides, it's better than working.

Well, my 30th birthday has come and gone. Like every other year, my dad forgot, or else couldn't be bothered to call me. But my mom made up for it by calling me about three times, sending me three cards, and emailing me a gazillion times. Plus, all my friends, real life and web, sent their birthday blessings, so that's nice.

I haven't actually sat down and dwelled on what it's like to be 30, which is probably good. It's an arbitrary number and by giving it some huge significance, I'm doing myself a disservice. Besides, everyone says their 30s were tons of fun. I'm finally an adult and can do whatever I want! Ice cream for dinner tonight! Thurty schmurty!
