A more democratic outlook...

millenial redesign coming

august 4, 2001
My summer reading list includes:
There was a lot more natural history in Moby Dick than I had expected...I would say 'remembered', but I never had to read it in school. Too bad...it would've been a drag to have to examine it and report on it, I suppose, but it's fascinating. As for Antarctica, which I only started in on yesterday, I haven't read anything from Kim Stanley Robinson that I haven't liked, as he combines excellent storytelling with hard science---"It's both entertaining and educational."

Whole Earth, Summer 2001
I've been published in an honest-to-god national (albeit small-footprinted) magazine, and the copy (and check!!)
are in my hot little house as we speak. Whole Earth, man, Whole-Freaking-Earth. I remember when 'the catalog'
came out, back in '69 or '71 or whenever the hell it was - - classic cars, vintage mind-expanding magazines, sometimes
I lose track, I admit it. But hey, I remember lying on a lawn in suburban New England very drunk from drinking home-brewed
rice wine, the recipe found within Whole Earth's very pages...I drank one or two ice tea glasses of the stuff, and I was down!

'Hello, connection please?'

Fine. Well, no, I don't have a cogent connection 'cept that that was Whole Earth, and now I'm in Whole Earth, freaking published,
man! $200.00, signed, sealed and delivered. No, it won't buy me a new G4 with cinema-aspect screen, but it'll buy me a handful
of books from Zeising Books and clear the local shelves of the Summer 2001 edition
of the magazine as I send it out to friends and family.

I've only mildly perused the issue, having just returned from a Wired sponsored screening of Final Fantasy (cool special effects - go
see it in a new theatre), and there are some heavy articles in there about design, karma and Viridia, and it's worth a look.

Do I get tenure now?

mushroom pizza, anyone?

Not knowing that there would be a frost last night, the 'garden giant' (Stropharia rugoso-annulata)
patch was officially created at 24 Rawson - - mostly for a bit of fun, although they can be eaten, too. (Hopefully, they're
better tasting than a Portobello, which I don't happen to like.) Temperatures in the 80's - 90's from last week moved to the 30's
last night, but probably not long enough to cause too much trouble.

To find inspiration in a bottle of beer and a college alumni magazine...
(not quite the same snap as 'to sleep, perchance to dream', is it..)

President Bush cut federal funding for research into Solar Energy (or at least, photovoltaic energy generation) by something like 60% in his federal budget proposal! (I would like to have some reference to back that up, but right now I'm running on rumour -- I saw it in an article earlier today, but neglected to blog it.)
Needless to say; actually, it's not needless at all -- I'm just not happy about it. Short-sightedness makes me mad.

april 2, 2001
Forgive me, finalists; it's been ~47 days since my (or anyone's) last posting,
and it's Spring!!! Granted, there's precious little green out there, but I have seen some shoots
cropping up, and nearly time to order bugs online for small-scale ecoterrorism and defense.

So, what're y'all up to?

Notes on California:
Okay, what were the roads again?
Sunset Blvd (not sunset & vine, regrettably)
Brentwood
Santa Monica Freeway
Santa Monica Boulevard
lots of Porsche (one aging 944; mostly boxsters)
one humvee
one vw van, mint (mostly)
one model A
sumptuous views from the Getty Center, after the ride
up the funicular (what's with the multiple cables . . . loops?)
ethnic appreciation of ethnicity
big fat steel (copings, bridge)
1/2 inch?
rebar - -

Thanks to all who suggested that the Getty Center was a good place to spend a free day in L.A. - - - at first I was put off by the $45.00 taxi ride each way (concierge estimate), but then I found out about the #10 and the #14 buses (round trip, $3.25), which run down the freeway, up Bundy, up Sunset (through Brentwood) and up to the Getty Center stop. Not to mention the fine funicular and the views from the hills...wow!

Of course, that was when I got the first (good(?)) view of the yellow inversion layer that covers the city -- ewwww.

Pearblossom Highway, 11-18th April 1986, David Hockney

(I picked up a copy of this print (presumably for a David Hockney show back in '97) at the museum, and it now resides in the den)

I ought to be waxing up the boards for an afternoon ski, but we don't know for sure about scheduling

Plans are in progress for the Verdi/SuperBowl extravaganza at Rawson ave...now, what to wear...?

(of course, there was never any intention of leaving Virginia out of the realm of finalism (with a lower-case 'f', as evidenced by the official 'stamp of finalism', which I believe is in the hands of our attorney....

Additional photographs are not improving the snow sculptures at this point - - - it's about execution, I guess, and not presentation - - form over publicity. Fame, apparently, does not come easily.

Ah, winter, not a season of charms for me: I don't like the cold, I don't like the dark, I don't like the ice, especially when I lose my (already precarious) balance. I do like the light and her effects, though: the sliver of melon moon and her neon blue reflection on snow at midnight when full; the lavender shadows of trees in the afternoon of gathering light. I think of friends, scattered like stars across the heavens: Amy, Carol, Chris, Jeff, Jack, Matt, Leslie, and David. Words and ideas are good at this time of year. In another month, things begin to wiggle under the frozen layers.

Another day of sword training and my mental capacity (rather, the lack of it) exhibits the 3.5-year hiatus since I last trained. It is my hope that this will be the last time I ever have to learn these forms!...How many popovers can Ian, Adrian, and Emma eat? I lost track of counting them today after school: baked in a mini-muffin tin, the batter made ~40 . I think Adrian came in first, having eaten close to 15, Ian, 13, and Emma, holding her own at about 9 or 10!!! What of the remaining 3 or 4?...well, what's all that sword training for anyway?

city of ice...

Greetings! I will endeavor to stay current with my blog--check in daily for my thoughts and opinions. Weather today not at all unpleasant: I padded the sled with extra blankets, lay Emma down in it with her Snoopy and Monster, and trekked around the Arlington rez a few times. She napped out and I enjoyed the stillness and the somewhat balmy air. Wild swans and Canadian geese have taken flight for the winter but a community of ducks still makes a home there among the reeds.

Congratulations to pyra/blogger on the purchase of their new server - - and much appreciation to all who contribute(d) to the cause. (Regrettably, this does not include me, but I'm lookin' forward to a mug and a contribution soon (assuming there's a raise down the road (and soon!)))
Meanwhile, it's snowing in Lexington, so that means - -

sledding!

Yippee!

p.b. I would apologize for the blink tag, but .. I won't.

Through careful calculation, $42.50 appears to be the magic number to keep finalists.org alive (with email forwarding 'n all) through 2001. the name is registered through 02002; the cost includes last year's costs as well. (if you have already contributed to the cause, please ignore this post.)

shockwave.com's inklink game is amusing and fun - an 8-person version of Pictionary, albeit with a few spoilers who would rather draw genitalia than 'play nice' (so play at night.)

january 1, 2001
tiny bubbles . . . best wishes, one and all!

december 27, 2000

Holiday poetry:

Daddy, there's a monster up there.
Don't extroy, don't extroy him.
Because he's mine, and I love him.
