I finished A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius recently and solidified my niche in weblogger hell in doing so.

I read the Dune saga again. It was weird.

The End.

okay, i think ive got the weird dialogue shit figured out. it seems to happen when the characters are on the move or travelling to an unknown place. like the characters are taking mental notes of the differences in their surroundings, but not putting too much time into analyzing them because theyre on the go and the next difference is right around the corner already. i have a little travel book that i take with me on every trip i go on, starting with europe just over 4 years ago. i picked it up while i was thinking about all this and found that my chickenscratchings in that book are almost identical to the "notes" gibson's characters are taking. "man at bar with big floppy hat ordering a drink that was on fire" "tall old buildings with gargoyles" "nobody making eye contact on the sidewalk, everyone looking at their shoes when they walk" ... for what its worth, ive made my peace with those blurbs this way. plus, mona lisa overdrive was written later in gibson's career, and he doesnt pull this shit in that book, so maybe he just grew out of it eventually, realizing it didnt quite cut the mustard doing what he wanted it all to do.

ive also noticed something very... foreshadowy going on. let me know when youve gotten to or passed chapter 20.

i'm glad you can appreciate it, cuz it bugs the crap outta me. i'll have to play a little catch-up (ketchup? catsup?) as i pushed the pause button on idoru (well, actually i pushed the eject button and put something else in, but i'll pull it back of the shelf), but right from the first sentence i was like: "oh yeah. william gibson. now i remember why i don't read william gibson." i just find the way he does things strange, almost disconcerting. sure, the words are beautiful, but it's a cold empty beauty...which i suppose may be intentional now that i'm analyzing it. cold, unfeeling beauty as opposed to warm and emotional. machine as opposed to human.

but there's a point where you go too far and you lose your focus. let's take star trek, for example. what most of these trek geeks standing around in borg outfits at conventions trying to get jonathon frakes autograph don't realize is that the whole point of star trek is the humanity of it. that fighting the borg is dealing with the fear of losing one's individualism to a conformist mass. that being vulcan is about holding part of yourself back every minute of everyday, because you know that if you don't you'll hurt the people around you. the people you're not allowed to admit that you love. so anyway, my point being that we need a little more human feeling in this story. it seems like everyone (at least up to the point i've read) deals with every situation with a vague sort of fear slash curiosity. let's get some crazy freaked out terror, or some self-forgetting rage. or SOMETHING.

im still kind of dealing with this writing style... its all bare-bonesy. i can appreciate the frankness of it, ive never been big on lengthy descriptions unless absolutely necessary, but i guess its taking me a little while to get past the imperfect (or just non-existant) grammar... its like gibson just lists off details sometimes, and then other times he really gets into the beauty of the language itself. im going to have to pay more attention to whats going on when each style is used, to get a better idea of the whys behind each one.
