"Piss if you hate Bush."
---seen scrawled over a Gainesville, Fla. urinal

I was discussing the 1A headline in yesterday’s Star-Banner (“TIGER KILLS MAN”) with one of my more politically sophisticated carriers, and we were discussing how “the media” might have tried to introduce liberal or conservative bias into this headline. Our best takes:

Liberal Bias
“Animal psychologist says lifetime of captivity caused cat’s hostility”
“Lax safety regulations at zoo led to worker’s death”

Conservative Bias
“Concealed firearm could have saved man from tiger”
“Kitty execution soon”

By chance, I happened to open up the archives page today, and by an even greater chance, it turned out to be the one-year anniversary of my first post to this blog.

Over a year now since I graduated, nearly a year that I’ve been gradually been building up animosity towards my job, towards all jobs. A year in which I purchased and subsequently beat the hell out of my first new vehicle, a year in which I learned (too well) to appreciate hard liquor, a year in which I read One Hundred Years of Solitude, among other books, one year of a limited number allotted to me.

A year in which I did have the opportunity to travel a little bit, despite limited means, in fact just returned from traveling and am facing the horror of returning to work, which may explain the darkly existential tone of this post.

Advice of the moment: go see Moulin Rouge, if you haven’t yet. I thoroughly liked it.

As a conservative talk radio station I often listen to put it, today allegedly marked a step in the healing process for a city and a nation.

Did Tim McVeigh, like Chris Isaak's rhetorical "baby," do "a bad bad thing?" Beyond a doubt.

Are there people that our society would be better off without? Certainly.

Would I ever have the certainty and moral courage to ever serve as a judge, jury member or executioner in a capital crimes case? HELL FUCKING NO.

Text of President Bush's statement on McVeigh.

I know it's pointless to link stuff all my regular visitors already read, but just in case, this is really awesome, and funny to boot. The single greatest Horowitz rebuke of all time --- certainly better than Conason's pathetic simpering.

When faced with the choice, "Beer or Michelob?", 10 times out of 9, I will choose the beer. Actually, lately I'm on this tip where I'll only drink alliterative drinks - Singapore Slings, Maker's Mark manhattans, and of course the old Rolling Rock.

Anyway, I really just wanted to share the Horowitz thing, that's all. Goodnight. ---BT

It really is disturbing on some level that Walton is now richer than Gates. Not that Microsoft is some Gibraltar of corporate virtue; it just seemed as if the world was somehow a better place when software was bigger than some homogenized retail juggernaut. The new internet economy vs. the new, new, neo-feudalist economy. Or something like that.

A new Wal-Mart Supercenter just opened right across the street from where I work. It's the third Super in this county of 250,000... there are also two regular, baby-sized Original Wal-Marts (remember the good old days, when Wal-Marts were merely huge?). I am going to challenge myself to see how long I can avoid going in this new store.
