Hear, hear! As someone who regularly commutes (by bicycle) around the Washington Monument, I have to heartily agree with this article/editorial from the Washington Post about the disgraceful jersey barriers around the monument. Tear them down and put up something more aesthetically pleasing, please!

As this article from the Post points out, there is a difference between saying that data is inadequate to prove that condoms are accurate, and saying that condoms themselves are inadequate. I dread seeing the consequences of this report on family planning and sex education efforts under the current administration.

I am torn by this article from Salon. I agree with the premise that if a community is going to scream about someone else using an offensive term they should first look to themselves and their own use of the word. But when I apply it to the queer community, it becomes more problematic for me. Yes, when someone screams, "Dyke!" at someone it's meant to be hurtful and organizations like GLAAD should fight the use. On the other hand, it's become an acceptable terms in other contexts (witness the term "bull dyke" to express a certain "look" or "type"), so where do you draw the line?

Yet another example of the idiocy of the drug war, courtesy Arianna Huffington at Salon.

This was a very, very amusing article about how little Americans know about Canada. I would like to think I'd get most of the questions right, but you never know!

Just when you thought it was safe to ignore the Bush v. Gore lawsuit, Salon went and reviewed a few books about the suit. The reviews alone have done little to inspire confidence in the majority opinion issued in that ridiculous suit, and I think reading the books would do nought but infuriate me.

I have to agree with the title of this article, the crackdown on safer dance venues is pure Raving Lunacy. That the federal law enforcement types use such things as the presence of a cooling room, or a private ambulance standing by (ever heard of alcohol overdoses, folks?) as evidence that the club is the equivalent of a "crack house" is ludicrous.

Finally! A way to challenge Bush's idiotic energy policy that would actually appeal to conservatives! I read Mother Jones on occasion, and I'm frequently exasperated by some of her stuff, but this article was just fantastic. Now we can only hope that the new Senate majority is actually listening...

China Dealt a Blow on Taiwan (washingtonpost.com). Finally Lee Tung-hui has shown his true colors (which should not be a surprise - he was co-opted into the Nationalist Party after being a known pro-independence advocate). Fascinating development, and it'll be neat to watch how this develops over the next few months.

More fall-out from the last story I blogged. Seems the searches were much more invasive than first thought. I really do question where these people's brains were.

OUCH! Teach that guy to sexually assault someone. Of course, given the circumstances, I doubt he'll be trying it again. ;-)
