Sunday: This wasn't an official SXSW show, but I wanted to mention the afternoon/evening show in McMillan Park that featured lots of really good austin bands. I missed Monroe Mustang, but arrived in time to catch Pajamacus, Viper Horse, and Subset... all 3 bands were great, and it was a wonderfully peaceful end to a crazy week.
I hope there are more events like this, and I think I will try to make that happen...There are few places for good bands to play in Austin and I think it could be a good thing for people who enjoy seeing bands and for the bands themselves as well.

Saturday: slept late and then watched Rushmore instead of trying to see Papa Fritas at Waterloo. the fu manchu in-store was pretty crazy.. way too crowded, pretty loud and women with fu t-shirts dancing on the counters. We went to Club DeVille for the Insound party and saw some punk band that didn't impress me much.. if I had known that Rhythm of Black Lines was playing at Emo's earlier, I would have gone there.. by the time we got down there.. At the Drive In was playing and there wasn't much hope of getting in. So instead we went down to the Millenium to see if there was a chance to get Jeremy into the Revolver party where GbV was to play later in the afternoon... it was actually quite easy to get him in, although Susan scored huge sister points by offering to let him go to the party in her place. The party was awesome!!! My homies Davis and Jacob were making some furiously strong drinks and I had plenty of time to drink them during the Unband (who Sean P. called "a crime against rock"). Nashville Pussy was next, and this was my first time to see them.. what a freak show. Loud Motorhead-ish music with T&A and fire-breathing courtesy of Cherokee Parks' sister... yee-haw! Guided by Voices is the best rock band in the world... enough said. so after an inebriated walk towards 6th street.. i was just in time to see one of my favorite austin bands, the palaxy tracks, who have a new cd out... after their set.. i stumbled back over to the Austin Music Hall to catch the Delta 72, who i was not too impressed by.. perhaps the big venue is not where they should be experienced... modest mouse and sebadoh were both pretty good, but not spectacular.. i was also very tired and it would take the almighty tenacious d to get me going and they put on a great show that was a great end to the festival for me.. a couple of my compadres went to the Electric Lounge to see Bright Eyes and Spoon which I'm sure was great as well...

Friday: after a pretty loose day at work (St. Patrick's Day), went to Frank and Angie's for dinner, thinking that it would be best to arrive early to La Zona Rosa to not have to wait in line to see Creeper Lagoon and Elliott Smith.... this seemed like a good idea, but in fact, i would have rather watied in line than see KGB and Cupcakes..actually i didn't really see them, i drank shiners and margaritas with my favorite Finnish band near the bar.. Dreamworks must have lots of spare change for mediocre bands.. Creeper Lagoon did not disapoint however and turned one one the best performances that i saw all week... Elliott Smith was also really good, with Sam on the bass, but after about half an hour in a huge, chatty crowd, i thought it would be best to try to catch the Frogs at the Electric Lounge (Gallery Lombardi). what can i say about the frogs? it was a surreal show to be sure and equally bizarre was Ex-Girl who was playing the indoor stage.

Thursday: whew... what a day yesterday was! I went pretty much non-stop from noon to 3am...... The BBQ was awesome and I hope everyone had as good of a time as i did... our ABBA cover went over pretty well i guess, but we will never play it again... we're just that cool.... after spoon decided not to play in the drizzle and risk electrocution, my crew and i went to pato's to see the gloria record... their new ep is really good, and they will be playing on some really good bills the upcoming weeks with Pedro the Lion, Ida , and Death Cab for Cutie. After TGR, we went to Club DeVille for the Dolittle party and sort of saw the Bottle Rockets, but mostly flapped my gums with various buddies... then we headed over to the Blind Pig Pub and caught Kissenger, next was Lemonator, and then we were up... I felt like we were playing in a narrow hallway... it's amazing that the same building used to be the Bates Motel. Our showcase was okay i guess, i broke a string, which always sucks, and the sound on stage was poor... after a shot of Jagermeister with the boys from Helsinki, we galloped down to the basement of the Empenada Parlor just in time to catch the Mittens this was an emotional show for everyone... the Mittens had unfortunately called it quits a few months ago, but had somehow managed to get into the festival... so they reunited and played a show that left everyone chanting at the end "GET BACK TOGETHER!, GET BACK TOGETHER..." ...John and I continued our role as the Drunken Fivehead Mittens Choir that we began on our fall 98 tour with the Mitts ... the Shinidgs were next and played their last show... i felt bad that they had to follow the Mittens, but they rocked as only they can... everyone is looking forward to Death Ray Vision, which has Geoff from the Shindigs and Lucas from the Mittens, they had their debut at the GBV hoot nite and damn near tore the place down.... more later.. i'm gonna walk over to waterloo records to see fu manchu's in store....

so we played the BBQ w/ Calexico, Neko Case, and the Rachero Brothers ( old 97's) spoon didn't play, because it rained a little bit.. damn! ... Jeaneane and Bob were there.. okay, so i am starstruck.. what's it to ya? ............About last night...Wednesday: The Kindercore showcase was pretty good... kincaid and dressy bessy were really good, and i was really looking forward to seeing japancakes, but they took almost a freaking hour to set up... that really killed the mood i think.. their show definitely had it's moments, but i'd prefer to listen to them on headphones while sitting down....more later...

i was expecting to be much worse off today, i actually felt okay.. got to work on time even. fivehead had an early practice scheduled for 5:30pm, but it was moved back a bit so that our friends from Finland, Lemonator, could try out our equipment that we are going to share tomorrow at our sxsw showcase at the Blind Pig Pub. The lads from Helsinki were a breath of fresh air... really swell chaps.. and also they rock...... i wish i could say that fivehead's first practice this month was as successful, but it wasn't... we are a bit rusty and i was having equipment failure. I am now off to party at John Bernard's and then to the Kindercore showcase at Emo's.... i'm most looking forward to see japancakes, if their live show is half as good as their cd, we're all in for a treat.

so the guided by voices hoot nite came off without a hitch... (speaking of hitched... congrats to jeff and maggie who have shocked the world with their wedding plans)....hooray for us...all of us, the bands that played, the people that showed up, the people at flamingo, everybody... all the bands were great and props to davis and ryan for having all of us at their house for the glorious post-show party... beware of the woman who was asking me "where all the producers are"!!!! she stumbled in after fivehead had gotten done with our gbv set and asked who we were and what kind of music we played..."alternative?" "world beat?" ... huh? she went on to explain that her boyfriend, who is 19, by the way is in a band called blah-blah and they're the next green day and that she wants to hook them up with a producer..."do i need to go to LA or Nashville?" huh? (So SXSW has officially begun now)... she went on to explain to Susan how she is 31, and how she had performed various sexual acts with said 19 yr olds in green dayish band... ok...and you are...? Listening to the new Elliott Smith CD "figure 8".. good stuff. Guess I'll have to check his act on friday night... it's nearing 6AM and work will not be fun tomorrow... thanks again chepo!

went to the smile and act nice party at the Red Eyed Fly last night... Janeane Garafolo was there, but i didn't get to see her... apparently she was swarmed by tons of people wanting her autograph and fawning over her and she left.. this makes me sick, especially since i wanted to invite her to see my band on thursday, and see if she could introduce me to Tenacious D. ...... but, i did have a great time at the party though... thanks to the wonderful hostesses, namely Jen S., Jennifer, and Luisa.
