It's really difficult to work when my neck is this stiff. I can't help but wonder if it's because my 'blog is down.

You know what I hate? Lisp code that is so tight the only way to figure it out is to step through it. We're talking about the kind of code that never uses structures or classes, has no type definitions or asserts, and uses almost no local variables. Comments are usually considered bad form, too. So every time I see (first blah) I have to first remember what kind of structure blah is supposed to have, and then figure out (semantically) what the first element is going to give me, etc.

Web apps are addictive, and I mean in the bad way. For example, I never used to use any bug-tracking or project-management software on my desktop, because it cost money that I just didn't want to spend. So now these free Web apps come along and I start using them, because hey, it's free and useful. But then when they're down, I can't complain (because it's free) but I also can't get work done. But life is like that. A lot of people become dependent on their jobs because they get used to the money and can't give it up.

For some reason this isn't showing up on the list of fresh blogs. Am I not cool enough?

Hmm, I liked the old "handmade" harrumph better.

Last night while I couldn't sleep, I was thinking about the differences between Manila and Blogger. The main difference is that Manila is page-oriented and Blogger is post-oriented. The advantage of a page-oriented system would seem to be that I can easily reorder the posts (e.g. on HTP' my posts are neither in chronological nor reverse-chronological order). A post-oriented system ought to be able to generate RSS files without having to use any heuristics (like looking for blank lines). I declare a draw.

And it's back up! How confusing.

Someone finally came up with a Gtk+ Look and Feel for Swing, so your Java apps can look (more or less) like your Gtk+ apps.

More downtime.

You would know that as soon as I sign up for Blogger, editthispage.com comes back up! Karma police, arrest this man...

I just turned on my lame free-5-megs RoadRunner site that is hosting this page, and wouldn't you know the agreement has the following line: "5. Web cameras and other utilities which automatically update personal home pages are not permitted in Road Runner because they unduly tax the supporting infrastructure of the system." How lame. I got my Mac set up so that I can bring back the WesCam, but I'm not sure where I'm going to put the images.

While riding the bus home from school today, I though of a new word. We have rockstars, so why not blogstars? You know who I'm talking about: "I am" Jason Kottke, cockybastard Halycon, etc. How do you afford your weblog lifestyle? And who will be the first with "blogstar" shirts and stickers?

There seems to be an interesting, uh, feature going on here. All my posts are dated Saturday, December 30, 1899. Can Blogger travel through time?

Don't worry, Hack the Planet is not moving again! But since everyone is talking about Blogger I figured I'd try it out.

Testing! Is this thing on? Better yet, is it multihomed, fault-tolerant, UPSed, fully backed-up, and earthquake-proof?
