Long live big government!: "Taxes are not a fixed price one charges the public, like retailers do for a carton of orange juice. They are calculated as a proportion of incomes that rise and fall with the fortunes of the economy. If the American people are now being "overcharged" for government services, it is because the economy is strong and their incomes are high, not because they are paying more than the value of the services they are receiving. Are Americans being undercharged when the nation runs a fiscal deficit? And will President Bush therefore raise taxes if we dip back into the red?"

1,212 soldiers were discharged from the military for homosexuality, a 17 percent rise from the previous year. Amazon and its Alexa Internet software subsidiary are facing two privacy invasion lawsuits and an informal inquiry by the Federal Trade Commission . . . Amazon.com has been utilizing a strategy called "dynamic pricing," . . . The company was recently revealed to be selling the same DVD movies for different prices to different customers . . . on its internal website Amazon has posted anti-union materials . . . A boycott has been launched against Amazon.com in response to the company's patents on "one-click" buying systems and on affiliate programs.
Or Bloomingdale's?
According to the National Labor Committee, as of March 1998, Federated Department Stores [parent company of Bloomingdale's] was selling clothes made in China under working conditions that actually violate China's own labor law and internationally recognized workers rights and U.S. corporate codes of conduct.
Or *gasp* Gap/Old Navy?
The company was accused of using indentured labor to produce clothing on the island of Saipan, a U.S. commonwealth in the South Pacific. The company was charged with a number of violations, including: failure to pay overtime and minimum wage; ongoing intolerable work and living conditions while advertising their garments as being "Sweatshop Free"; shipment of "hot goods" in interstate commerce; and aiding and abetting factory violations of involuntary servitude . . . Gap brand caps are made at the BJ&B sweatshop in the Dominican Republic where . . . women are paid less than men in violation of Dominican law, workers are hit, touched inappropriately, and belittled, and conditions are unsanitary. Eight cents of each $20 cap goes to workers, who earn approximately $40 after 56 hours of work, in violation of Dominican law . . . some Gap clothing is manufactured in a Thai factory that has long exploited its workers by underpaying, denying payment of overtime wages, requiring forced overtime work and providing none of the working welfare necessary under Thai law. Employees have been made to work in shifts, which each lasted for 12 hours with strict limits on permission time to use the toilet. Women workers have also been sexually harassed and violated. Workers who organized a 1998 strike were fired for their activities.

Why should Leno apologize? Giuliani IS a fascist and the people of New York should regret putting him into office.
Group demands apology from Leno NEW YORK (AP) - The head of a national anti-bias group demanded an apology Saturday from Jay Leno for his comment that Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was "fascist" to appoint a decency committee on art. "I think it's terrible," said William Fugazy, chairman of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations and a Giuliani supporter. "To compare him to a fascist, I think, is a disgrace." In a departure from his usual schtick, Leno on Thursday labeled Giuliani a "fascist" for appointing a decency commission to determine whether certain pieces of art are offensive. The comedian compared Giuliani's efforts to Adolf Hitler's crusade to remove what he called "degenerate art" from German museums in the early years of the Third Reich. Fugazy said his group planned to mount a letter-writing campaign to NBC urging Leno to apologize. The network carries Leno's "Tonight Show," where the comedian made the remarks. Giuliani's office did not return a call for comment. A call to the "Tonight Show" in Burbank, Calif., was not returned.

Keanu Reeves ex-girlfriend dies in crash LOS ANGELES (AP) - A former girlfriend of Keanu Reeves died when she lost control of her Jeep Cherokee, struck three parked cars and was tossed from the sport utility vehicle as it overturned. Reeves' publicist, Cheryl Maisel, said the actor will not comment publicly on the death of Jennifer Syme, 28, of Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Coroner's Office investigator Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said Reeves called the office after hearing of Syme's death Monday. He offered to identify the body, but was told positive identification already had been made using her driver's license, MacWillie said. Syme was alone behind the wheel of the Jeep at 6:15 a.m. when she was killed near Highway 101 outside Hollywood, MacWillie said. She wasn't wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The cause of death has not been determined, pending toxicology test results, said Lt. Fred Corral of the coroner's office. Syme was an actress who had a small role in the 1997 David Lynch film "Lost Highway." She and Reeves reportedly broke up last year.

Ex's. Aren't they wonderful?
Update: Brockovich trial yields guilty verdict LOS ANGELES (Launch) - A Ventura, Calif., jury has returned a guilty verdict in the case of a trio of men who tried to extort legal crusader Erin Brockovich-Ellis and her boss Ed Masry, both of whom were portrayed in the film "Erin Brockovich." In April of last year, attorney John Reiner, Brockovich's ex-boyfriend Jorg Halaby (the lovable biker played by Aaron Eckhart in the film), and Shawn Brown, one of Brockovich's ex-husbands, were nabbed by the FBI in a plot to extort some $310,000 from Brockovich and Masry. The trio had planned to tell the media that Brockovich was a bad mother and that she and her boss had had an affair, but would not float the fabricated story if a sum of money was paid. AP reports that the charges against Halaby and Brown were dropped, but that Reiner was found guilty Monday, convicted on two counts of attempted extortion and one count of conspiracy to commit extortion, and faces up to four years in prison. Reiner is scheduled for sentencing on May 2.

Dr. Laura's TV show canceled LOS ANGELES (AP) - Laura Schlessinger's TV talk show, criticized by homosexual rights groups and snubbed by advertisers and viewers, was canceled after one season. "Dr. Laura," which debuted in September, taped its final episode this week but could continue to air through the fall, Paramount Pictures Television Group said Friday. Poor ratings had prompted stations in major television markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to move the syndicated "Dr. Laura" from daytime to the middle of the night. Schlessinger, who was unable to convert her radio popularity into TV success, said she was proud of the program that she called a "true alternative." "I believe it could have earned a substantial audience in time, but the television advertiser boycott precluded that," Schlessinger said in a statement.
Paramount had defended the show as part of a free exchange of ideas in which "hurt, hate and intolerance" had no place. "We commend Dr. Laura, her producers and staff for their desire to create an alternative program for daytime viewers, and are proud of their efforts to do so," Paramount said Friday. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, a vocal Schlessinger critic since she labeled homosexuality "deviant" and "a biological error" several years ago, lauded the show's demise. "Paramount from the beginning said 'Let the people decide.' Viewers and advertisers alike have decided, and they decided to reject Dr. Laura's message of intolerance," said GLAAD executive director Joan Garry.

Author Fein can't follow 'Rules' NEW YORK (AP) - It seems some rules are made to be broken. Ellen Fein, co-author of the "Rules" books that teach women how to snag men by playing hard to get, is getting a divorce. The announcement comes just three months before the release of the third book in the series, which Fein again co-wrote with Sherrie Schneider. AOL-Time Warner is expected to release "The Rules III: Time-Tested Secrets For Making Your Marriage Work," in June. Fein, 43, has been married to pharmacist Paul Feingertz, 41, for more than 15 years, People magazine reported. The publisher will insert a paragraph into the new book's introduction, stating that Fein and her husband are divorcing. Schneider is still married. There are more than 2 million copies in print of the original 1996 book, "The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets For Capturing The Heart of Mr. Right." That number dropped to 350,000 for the sequel, "The Rules II: More Rules to Live and Love By," which came out in 1997.

This is why I love Mr. Blue:
Dear Mr. Blue, I am a 24-year-old public relations woman involved in an office relationship, or so it seems. Since I arrived at this company, a senior executive has flirted madly with me. And a few nights ago, at a karaoke bar, he got very touchy-feely and suggested we sing Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" together. We did so and the night turned into a touchy-feely love fest. But then at a co-worker's birthday party this weekend, he practically ignored me. (I think I've actually fallen for him.) Is this guy playing with my emotions or confused about his?
Dear Confused, Never believe what you hear in bars. Old guys get in a bar with a 24-year-old woman and a double scotch and they lose track of who they are and start playing Cary Grant. You're probably tall and slim with long auburn hair and cool green eyes and your effect on men is to stupefy them and make them fall on the floor and wave their arms and legs. At the birthday party, the lights were too bright and he was unable to have the same out-of-body experience. The poor guy is stunned. Use your charm to rise swiftly to the top of your company and when you get there, fire him. He's unreliable.
Oscars: This was my favorite part of the entire evening--Lehman stood firm . . . and delivered a ringing tribute to the Writers Guild. The word strike was never mentioned, but everyone in the house knew what he meant. That's what you hire writers for.
Americans are sleep deprived: WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans are sleep-deprived workaholics, with only about a third sleeping the recommended eight hours a night, and about 40 percent say they have trouble staying awake on the job, according to a poll released Tuesday.
