ti livegear case study - research and design shape a new business unit
John Rheinfrank and Chip Wood
This shows how design can be at once strategic and tactical, and how watching people in the field can lead to whole new business lines. This taken from a nice collection of papers at the industrial designers society of america(IDSA). Since their site uses frames, I couldn't link directly to the paper. But this link to the idsa design management section will get you to all the other papers. Worth a browse --this is about product design, but all the big ideas apply directly to electronic products and services as well.

New Rules for the New Economy : 10 Radical Strategies for a Connected World
Kevin Kelly
This book does a great job of providing a high-altitude view of the important aspects of network economics, then bringing you right down to the ground where you can think what to do about it. Other business books will tell you about increasing returns, value webs, exponential growth, network ecologies, and why you should give stuff away on the web. Kelly does so in few words with clear insight, then adds what he does better than most: he synthesizes all this into a handful of ideas that matter. This book is already changing how I think about projects and how I do my work. Write "Siskel" on one thumb, "Ebert" on the other, and turn them both up.
