Blue

I received my replacement American Express Blue card today (they sent me two cards initially, the primary card without my middle initial, and an additional card with my middle name... so I had them cancel the additional card and reissue the primary with the middle initial). I cut the blue square out of the middle of the old card... it looks nifty ;-p

Target Smart Visa

Ok, the real reason for the blog... I received a totally unsolicitated Target Visa (smart chip inside). It's to replace the cheesy Target "Guest Card" I've had for a few years. The cool thing is that it comes with a US$5K limit ;-)'

New list of cards:
$6.5K LinuxFund MBNA Platinum Plus (Linux Penguin on front)
$2K Capital One
$2.5K Direct Merchants Bank Titanium
$5K Discover Platinum
$5K FirstUSA Platinum
$5K AT&T Universal Card Platinum
$6K Citi Platinum Select
$3.5K Chase Toys'R'Us (1% rebate on all purchases)
$2K American Express Blue
$6K Chase Platinum
$2.5K FirstUSA Smart Visa
$5K Target Smart Visa
Total credit card limit: $51K!

Emily will appreciate this blog, so I'll list it here.

I was reading Mynx:
"As New York was crashing into bits, an insightful and courageous woman lost her battle with breast cancer. Catherine Anna Young died at 9:30am, Tuesday morning. She asked that in lieu of flowers, you join the boycott against Nestlé. I've been participating in that boycott since 1997."

I started my boycott today. Emily has been boycotting Nestlé for some time, but, well, chocolate is my weakness. More money for Mars and Hersey, tho ;-p

Noah just said, "Tomorrow after my birthday party, I'm going to Broadway!" One will note that his birthday is in April, and that Broadway is 2000+ miles away...

I was driving home from FunWorks with the kids, and Noah really wanted us to stop at Del Taco to get some lunch. I agreed, but in the meantime, he and Rebekah were snacking on crackers. Rebekah began her tell-tale "uh-UHH" noise, which means she needs more food, so I said to Noah, "Rebekah needs more crackers; please give her some."

His response was: "I'm not up to doing that right now."
Me: "Well, she needs you to."
Noah: "I don't think...I'm not very sure about that. I think we need to save them for later."

Argh! I ended up giving her some myself, but what a little mimic he's become. I'll leave it up to you, gentle reader, to determine which parent he's learned this from ;-)

Tall white pantry cabinet

Yesterday I was contemplating spending lots of money on various items (new custom-built PC for the kids), and I think I mentioned it to Emily, who protested and said she had "other priorities."

Well, I was thinkin', and I figured if I was going to speed a few hundred dollars on a PC, I might as well get her the cabinets she's been wanting for the kitchen. I don't know why I've been balking for so long at doing it. I think partly because I'd like to build them, but then I know I want them to look perfect, and that means it'd take weeks and weeks to get them built right ;-p

It was about 7:30 at night, and I told Ems, "Get ready, we're heading to Home Depot to get a cabinet." A few hours later we were back home with not one, but two tall white pantry cabinets similar to the picture above (15 1/2" deep x 18" wide x 71 3/4" tall). Very nice, and rather reasonable since they came put together and just look great in our kitchen, with one on either side of the window.

Yesterday my parents came over to drop off some furniture. We talked about them picking up a bag of hamburger patties and sesame seed buns at Costco and we planned to do a barbeque. After we put the furniture in storage and they headed to Costco for food, I mowed the front lawn (all nice and green even without being watered), set up Noah's big pool, and got the barbeque grill going. The hamburgers were great, as was the chips and salsa, and it was nice just taking it easy outside. Later that night we had lit the firepit and Noah and his Nana and Papa all got to roast marshmellows. A good time was had by all. Even by Emily, I suspect, even if we all stayed up too late for her. ;-p

Very, very cool IX (Internet eXchange) of independant smaller ISPs and businesses to pass local traffic and keep it off their internet uplinks: Columbus Internet eXchange (CMH-IX). I've love to see such a thing in Modesto, but we're just too backwards, and it's all about money, and this doesn't make money (it saves money by reducing your uplink needs, but if you're at less than 50% on those, it wouldn't seem like a big deal).

New interum goal before my CCIE: CCIP (Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional). I'm still going to do my Written exam, and then follow with the 3 remaining Security exams for this new CCIP.

Those 3 exams also get me the Cisco Security Specialist cert, which I feel is a step down from the CCNP Security Specialist (this new cert only requires CCNA, which is fine, but they should have kept a CCNP-level version as well), but oh well, they're retiring the CCNP-level cert.

Then I have to take the BCSI Beta (Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks), which is a "internetwork" version of the CCNP Routing test (vs. the CCNP is just "network" level, although oddly enough the Routing exam deals with internetworking protocols like BGP).

I want to have all that done in time for the Multicast + QOS exam due out in the Fall (probably near the end of the year, knowing Cisco). I find it interesting that Cisco has a new cert that you can't actually get yet since one of the exams isn't out yet, plus one of the exams is a BETA.

I want to set up a local Internet Exchange in Modesto. I'll blog more details later. Yes, this is yet another pipe dream of mine, but it would be nice to see Modesto get fast local access to all local ISPs with a clue (and regional, like PacBell for DSL users and @Home for AT&T cable... that is when they get the fiber installed).

Meet the Narcs of the internet. I'm thinking the internet community should just blackhole their IP space. Too bad they host with Allegro, including their email. Interesting data on their site is the Top Pirated Movies list. I think "Dude, Where's My Car?" is number one because no one wants to pay to see it, but they think it might be funny.

Ok, Pay It Forward had a chance to be a pretty good movie worth recommending. And I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it and wants to.

But the ending just bites. Oh well.

Hey, but on another note, I guess it may be based on a book. There's a Pay It Forward Foundation if nothing else. Yes, you too can help a thief get away without getting busted. You too can shoot a gun in a hospital and get off early with parol. Ok, I'm a little snarky, but still.

It appears the BBC has a clue and can keep a news website online. Live RealAudio feed.

They just reported that all US planes are being held on the ground.

News so far from the BBC feed: Two planes crashed into the WTC buildings, one into the south building, one into the north building; plane crashes into the Pentagon; and now, live, we watched a third explosion in Manhattan, and now one of the World Trade Center buildings have collapsed.
