Just an FYI to everyone out there on the net
If you receive an email that contains details about anything technical from a friend, there is a 99% that is NOT true and is a hoax. Lately I have received a few of them like:
  • If you are on a call with someone and they ask you to press 90# don't do it! That one actually made me laugh.
  • For every time you forward this email, some poor girl gets 3 cents towards some kind of operation. There is NO way of tracking this on the net. Therefore a hoax
  • If you're on a cable modem, be careful, there is a new virus that can infect your TV through the cable and it can record what you watch. Ok, I admit, I started this one ;c) Once again, it just ain't possible.
For a list of viruses if you are sent a warning, look it up at Symantec's site. They have a list of the most recent viruses along with a few hoaxes. If you do not see the virus your friend sent you there, it does not exist. Trust me, these guys will know about it before your friend does.

My Comet Cursor

Just screwing around on the web, and I foud this page which lets you change your cursor. My Comet Cursor lets you change your "arrow" cursor into something more fun! Turn it into Snoopy, Dilbert, a grand piano or even a bottle of mouth wash! There's a pretty extensive variety, and there's also a HOW-TO if you want to change the look of the cursor on your web page!

BSD on Mac OS X Public Beta

Having attended a brief seminar conducted by an Apple rep I found some interest in the mention of the Mac OS X Public Beta on the infamous Slashdot. I had a hard time understanding all of the article, but I have a feeling that this is the format of OSes to come. Nonetheless, this article is fairly thorough with just a few holes in the info provided. A bit technical for myself, but it addresses several issues that I wouldn't mind spending a bit more time researching.

A New Breadboard Technique

A man named Kevin Ross made a discovery late one night while he was trying to finish a project. He noted that it is possible to create quick circuits using a Tortilla-Board™. This is a nifty trademark of his own, and even though it has no real practical use I found it to be an amusing read.

Hellmouth

Here is an article that discusses the post effects of the "Columbine Tragedy" making points such as: "Odd values -- unthinking school spirit, proms, and jocks -- are exalted, while the best values -- free thinking, non-conformity, and curiosity -- are ridiculed." and "Few of the week's media stories -- in fact, none that I saw -- pointed out that the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, issued biannually, along with the Justice Department's reports indicate that violence among the young is dropping across the country, even as computing, gaming, cable TV and other media use rises." Yet another point discusses "Schools everywhere openly embraced Geek Profiling. One group calling itself the National School Safety Center issued a checklist of "dangerous signs" to watch for in kids: It included mood swings, a fondness for violent TV or video games, cursing depression, antisocial behavior and attitudes. (I don't know about you, but I bat a thousand). The panic was fueled by a ceaseless bombardment of powerful, televised images of the mourning and grief in Colorado, images that stir the emotions and demand some sort of response, even when it isn't clear what the problem is."

The forementioned article makes many points that I agree with, and coming from a popular online community, Slashdot, I'm confident in stating that I'm not the only one. The article continues with a series of postings from teens around the country concerning their personal experiences, and thoughts on the issue. Hellmouth is not actually just an article but rather it was originally planned to be released as a book in which the profits were to be donated to charity, but a lot of people cried foul over the use of their words outside of the Slashdot domain. Thay had to stand back and rethink the decision. They've decided to hold off printing Hellmouth for now, and instead to put it online.

Frustration

Have you ever really wanted to talk to someone just because they always have the perfect thing to say to you to make you feel good, but you just can't seem to catch up with them for some reason or another?

Well, I'm having one of those moments right now, and since I can't talk to her, I figured that I'd type to the world. Not that the world sees my web page, but I can flatter myself can't I? Earlier this semester I felt extremely overwhelmed with everything that I was going through, and now I've got this new level of confidence. I'm happier, and less streesed. I've recently gained control, and now I just need to start making better use of my time. So many things that I really want to do, and so many more things that I need to do have consumed my day. I know it will all get done.

Hmm. . . I feel better now.

Are you a geek?

01100010011011110110111100100001

Did I scare you? This is a festive message I got via email, and since I've nothing better to do I decoded it. I spent about 30 minutes trying to find a binary to ascii converter on the web, and then I broke down, and figured it out by hand.

FBI Invasion

Ever wondered what happens when your IRC chatter draws the attention of the public servants at the FBI? dilinger writes: "I wrote up a description of what happened to me last weekend. The FBI confiscated my computers for checking out yankees.com, after it had been defaced. If this doesn't make you paranoid, nothing will. :)"

Scripting

ZDNet is running an article comparing PHP, ColdFusion, JSP, & ASP. Although they don't show the script sources, it's interesting to note that PHP garnered the highest performance of the bunch. From the article, PHP: 49pps, ASP: 43pps, CF: 29pps, JSP: 13pps" PHP did gather the highest pps, but it's interesting to also note what the article gave top honors. In any case, it's an interesting topic, but remember: use what's best for you. Don't use what you feel you "have" to.

What's your true color?

Here are the results to a personallity quiz that I got from Ryan's page. Fairly accurate (not the TV part), so try it out for fun!

Hey, Matthew, you're an Observer!

You like television. At parties, you lounge around on couches and watch other people flirt and act stupid. But at the same time, you're happy enough to go along with the group. You don't like drawing attention to yourself red platform shoes or flamboyant, sequined outfits are out of the question. A perfect evening for you means a cozy chat with a good friend and a pint of Haagen-Dazs.

Like all mellow folks, you're not too into serious soul mining. You'd rather just relax than freak out about yourself. But at the same time, you recognize that understanding your inner nature can help you further develop your sense of intuition, discover parts of yourself that remain below the surface, and learn how to better communicate with others. And that's cool, right?

At work, you're a team player, but chances are you aren't clamoring for that big promotion. Where to go for lunch is enough of a decision for you. You work best under a routine, and you avoid challenges that require too much improvisation.

So check it out, and e-mail me if you want access to post to my Joke Blog.
