It's very strange, the business of news. I stayed inside our Boston building all day, pulling file, finding facts, and this and that. The tv's are all around, and the smoke poured out. But not really, it was all on tv. It's strange, sickening, scary--that i had to work on piece about all this, not being there, being here and watching it unfold.

And when i finally arrived home last night, i continued to watch. Not with the eye of a journalist--this needs to be clearified, they should have asked that question--but with the eye of spectator. I can't really believe it. And then you wonder, are they coming again, will it hit closer to home next time????

I'm on the 10-month plan. I pouted and moped all summer long because yet another summer was going to go by, and i was not going to do what i've been planning to do for years--drive cross-country. So i'm decided. I'm saving up the next 10 months and plan to take and extended vacation/sabbatical/ or full-out quit next summer. I refuse to have had spent my entire 20's without a summer off.

There's just no time to write the novel, work in the garden, re-do the house, drive cross country and so on if i'm required to come in day after day after day. A girl with other goals can only stand the 9 to 5 routine for so long before it breaks her.....And i don't think that super glue can fix what's about to be broken here.

I thought being a homeowner would be fun. I mean those TV shows with hip couples strapping a hammer to their faded jeans and whipping up this and that in the span of a weekend all seem so easy and harmless. Well, i've found it's neither. Take the paint stripping for example. I'm a sucker for infomercials and this one add i saw, they gooped on the foam, let it sit for a while, and viola, the paint came off like butter. Not only did our paint not come off like butter, but it barely came off at all. There was scraping, and re-scraping, applying stripper and re-applying, and more stripping and so on..... Where is the fun????

And then there's the garden, which, well, let's not talk about. I had these visions of being Martha Stewart in black clothing, and that's just not happening. I read the books, i know the good insects from the bad, shade and sun loving plants, which things should be planted when and how...but alas, I hate bugs, no, i really hate bugs. And after a 10-minute romp through my garden with a shovel i get grossed out, and go back inside. This just isn't working. Maybe i should plant plastic flowers!

And in the irony of all ironies, i usually enter the house after failed gardening attempts and turn on the TV to watch more home and garden shows. Then come up with what i think to be pretty cool gardening ideas, and eventually i attempt the outdoor world again. And it fails, and the cycle keeps repeating itself.
