Pictures from the aftermath:

The firefighters across the street at Hook & Ladder Co. 3 are waiting for their fellow firefighters to come home. From my window I can see them sitting outside, and for the past three days they sat outside. But their friends are not coming home. They're brothers are not coming home. In support, we put up a sign in our window displaying our thanks and sorrow for their loss:

I went out to see how it looks, and found another couple images that really expressed how grateful we should be for these men.

Let us hope that we never again see the streets of NYC barren except for an Army Hummer.

I've never prayed before today.

I was early as I walked down Broadway on my way to my 9:30 class. When I first saw the cloud of smoke billowing out of an unknown building, a passerby echoed my sentiments:

"That's a big ass cloud of smoke."

Still unaware of the source of the fire, I continued on my way. Only then was I made aware of what was going on.

"A plane crashed into the World Trade Center."
"Oh shit..."
"You can see the crater in the side of the building..."

One of the most disturbing things I've ever seen was a building ripped apart, blazing with fire. I saw the crater in the side of the building. I was standing on the corner of Mercer St. and 3rd St., one amongst the crowd of more than 50.

I continued on to class: Database Management Systems. I wasn't aware that both towers were hit, I didn't know it was terrorism. Databases seemed important. Fifteen minutes into class, someone ran into the room.

"The tower just collapsed and the Pentagon was just attacked."

Simultaneously everyone jumped out of our seats and ran. Most seemed to not know where they were running to, but databases didn't seem quite as important anymore.

I knew exactly where I was running. Jenny was the only thing on my mind. She lives just a few blocks from ground zero, and did not plan to leave for class until after 10AM. I hurriedly pulled my cell phone out of my pocket, but it was useless. I ran outside only to hear the horrible cries of a thousand mourners.

Parents: Long Island. Brother: Uptown. Oh my God...Jenny. Where is Jenny? Is Jenny oK? raced through my mind. My thoughts were nightmares.

A phone, a phone, my kingdom for a phone. All I wanted to do was find out if she was safe. Payphones had lines that wrapped around corners. Most cellular networks were out of commision. I fell to my knees.

I ran into one of the dorms to check out the latest news. Nothing but smoke, dust, and horror. But at last, I found a glimmer of hope. A sign was posted saying residents of downtown dorms were being evacuated into Coles, the NYU sports complex.

My foot was already bleeding from my uncomfortable shoes, but I ran as fast as I could. As I raced to the gym, I prayed. I've never prayed before today.

The gym was filled with people waiting for their friends and others watching the horrific chain of events unfold on the television. The downtown refugees had not arrived yet, so I sat in painful silence.

When the news announced the collapsing of the second tower, the entire room ran out into the street to watch as a landmark fell to its grave. I could not believe what I was seeing. The skyline will never be the same.

The TV at Coles eventually losts its reception, so I scurried around the campus looking for Jenny. People were grieving in the streets. I wanted to comfort the people who burst into tears after hearing from others about the fate of their loved ones. I wanted to be comforted.

My feet hurt too much to move anymore. I hurried back home to get my rollerblades so that I could more effectively transport myself around the campus. The walk home was awful. Ten blocks of fear.

I saw Nick as I walked up to the door of my building. He told me the news I needed to hear.

"Jenny's safe upstairs."

I ran up to my room as fast as I could. When I burst through the door, Brian was there, pointing me to my room. I walked in and saw her there - scared and waiting for me. My fears had calmed, but the day was far from over.

AOL was the only form of contact I had with the outside world. I was bombared by my loving friends, all concerned for my safety. Thank you Sean and Gerry for contacting my family when my I could not reach them. Thank you Harish and Chris and Tom and Laura and Poonam and Jessica and Dana and Derek and Alice and Hiranya and Sue and Ranjani and Dave and all of the rest of you who cared so much. Thank you all.

Never will I forget the sites of the "second Pearl Harbor." Today was the scariest day of my life. The city that never sleeps finally went to bed.

<12:29 AM>

Just got back from Jimmy Eat World at Bowery Ballroom. The show was good, but the sound was surprisingly off for the venue. Couldn't hear the lead singer for shit. But it's all good. Cuz when I got out of the show, I got a flyer announcing The Juliana Theory are playing CMJ! Shibby.

Today marked the first day of classes for all but me. My scheduled worked itself into a Tuesday/Thursday-only routine, sweet deal. But I'll begin my routine tomorrow morning, oh yes. Computer Systems Organization I, Database Management Systems, Intro to Marketing, and Global Business Environment. Excited? Not quite.

It's the first time in my college career that I haven't been looking forward to the new year. Maybe it's the tough workload. Maybe it was the lack of relaxation from the summer. Maybe it's the fact that I'm getting old. College is half-way over.

My lower back hurts and I think I'm getting hot flashes. I'm so old.

OK I'm back. OK so I didn't really go anywhere. But I am all moved into my new dorm on 14th St., and I'm rearing to go for a new school year. Oy.

Mid-August was pretty hectic as usual, as continually got shat on by IRHC. But after Saturday, that shit be over, and no more bitching about the group shall continue I swear. Let's hope.

So the summer I so dreadfully hated is coming to an end, and as I see all my friends again, I'm ready for a new year. While nervous for school to start, I'm excited at the same time. It will no doubt be tough, but I'm learning to take it a day at a time.

So I went to the Reggie and the Full Effect concert the other day. I got a position in the front row, and after standing through 3 other hours, I was souped. On like the second song the guitarist and bassist are all rocking out right in front of me, and I'm noticing they're a little close. To the point where I'm dodging flying bass guitars on either side of my head. Like I said the bassist was all rocking out and shit, and at one climatic moment in the song he fucking punches me in the eye. Mother shitter that was a bitch. The bastard broke my goddamn glasses too. Damn rockstars.

The excitement didn't end there though. Before the show while waiting on line, some guy was talking with me and one of my friends. He was your run-of-the-mill CBGB-goer, pierced and tattooed at every appendage. Sadly, I made the non-body-manipulator's mistake of asking how much his septum ring hurt:

"Did that hurt?" "Have you ever been punched in the face, really hard?"
"Actually I have." (ironically, this was before the above bassist incident).
"Did you like it?"
"Umm..."
"I mean did you really like it.
"Ummmm..."
"Because that's what it felt like. And I loved it."
"I'm going to go talk to someone else now."

So I figure I'll post some of the latest digital camera pics soon enough. I'll do my best to keep all my loving fans (Mom, Dad, that's you) up to speed on the happenings in my life, as sordid and twisted as they may soon be.

CLASS IS OVER!

Ah it feels good. Still ass tired from studying non-stop, Jenny and I celebrated with a double-feature movie night: America's Sweetheart's (for her) and Planet of the Apes (for me). I was pretty underwhelmed by both, but now it's all good. We only paid for one. Next up: Made and Wet Hot American Summer.

The novelty of prancing around and saying "Hey guess what I have to do tonight...NOTHING!" still hasn't worn off. Yay! We've been taking the relaxing approach to being free. We went running after work and then had some dinner in the park, and for the first time in a while we just sat and watched TV without worrying about homework or midterms. And it feels good.

Holy shitballs it's been a while. So what's been going on? I'm counting down the days till the end of class (August 1st!), then the day I move out of my craphole apartment (I'll explain later). Jenny and I celebrated 6 months a few weeks ago with a mix of class and crass, dinner at Tribeca Grill followed by a viewing of Legally Blonde (contrary to my intial doubts, it was actually quite funny). We felt the combination was an appropriate reflection of our personalities. I never liked steak before I ate at that place. Oh it's good.

This weekend was suprisingly eventful - brother Justin's birthday party yesterday followed by a picnic in the park today.

Tom's engagement party next week, freedom the next. Things are looking a little brighter. How are you?
