Hi Schelly,

Well, let's start with the responses from others. I got ~100 e-mails from
all over the world, including Sydney, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Quebec, London,
and, of course, all over the US.

Rather than contacting the ~100 people involved to ask permission to
reprint, I have enclosed a selection of ~35 of the more touching notes. With
the exception of 1 or 2, I had never met or corresponded with any of these
people on a personal basis before.

Please have a read and let me know which of these notes (if any), you would
like to quote. I will be happy to contact the subset of people to see if
they are willing to allow the use of their words.

Other info to follow shortly...

David

We have said our prayers. We have contacted all who we know work in
Manhattan. Thank God they are all alright. We don't what else to do. We
are all stunned over here.
When you eventually get back to your office, if your office is still there,
please tell us if your siddur has survived.

David, I have read many of your queries to Jewish Gen. but I am most
taken by your last posting regarding yesterday's tragic events in NYC.
You have (unfortunatly) put a human face on this horrific event. I hope
that you do not mind, but I sent a copy of it to many of my friends and
family who do not live in this area. I thought perhaps that they could
get a sense of the tragedy beyond what is being reported on TV. I do
hope that you finally get to your office and find that siddur, I hope
that you will keep us all posted.

Dear David,

I was touched by the story of the loss of your great grandmother's
siddur- so glad that you have a scanned copy at least. My daughter studies
art in lower Manhattan. Yesterday, she collected a few bits of paper that
she found floating in the area. She thought of those who died and how the
mundane scraps of paper with phone messages etc might be precious to some
families at a later date.

I really appreciated the ending of your message, a prayer for peace.
Personally, I'm an atheist, so I won't be praying. However, your message of
peace is greatly appreciated. I hope voices of reason such as yours might
prevail upon your rather belligerent government to show real leadership.
..Yes, punish those who committed this terrible crime, but not by a
military response which just kills other innocent victims.

Take care of yourself, Rose Marie Whalley, Montreal

David,

As I sit here from my home in Louisiana, watching CNN, they are talking
about and showing pictures of your building, One Liberty Plaza. They are
extremely concerned that it's going to collapse. After reading your email
last night about your great grandmothers siddur being locked in your desk, I
can only hope that if the building collapses, the rescue workers and anyone
else that is there cleaning up the ruble will not throw away any furniture
until it's been gone through in case anything is salvageable. My prayers
are with you and everyone else directly affected by this horrible tragedy.

Dear David,

It is wonderful to hear from a survivor of one of the most horrific acts of
terrorism ever carried out in the United States. Thankfully you are alive.

We know that the possible loss of such a valued family treasure will cause
you much sadness and despair. On the positive side you actually got to
hold, read and have possession of this wonderful piece of family history.
If in fact the siddur is lost, you will carry the memories, contained
therein, with you always in your heart.

We have never met, but we take joy and comfort in the fact that you are
alive. God Bless You. We're sure that your great grandmother would be
extremely proud of the fact, that even during, what had to be, the most
traumatic day in your life, you took the time to mourn the lose of her
irreplaceable siddur.

Our prayers are with you.

Dear David,

Your story touched my heart. Thank you for sharing it.

When we recite the Rosh Hashonah prayer "Who shall live and who shall die...by fire, by
drowning..." no one would have ever thought to include the scenario of yesterday's
events. It was inconceivable. We, who often read of terrorist acts in Israel, Northern
Ireland, Africa and elsewhere, thought it couldn't happen here. But it did. Now we are
forever changed .

I've received e-mails from all over the world, including ones from postcard dealers in
Russia, Germany and Argentina. Each expressed sympathy. The one from Germany read, in
part, "We are all really shocked and my mourning couldn't be stronger if this had happened
to my land."

I imagine you have lost friends who worked in the area, and my thoughts are with you. I
say a prayer for peace every day and will continue to do so.

L'shana Tova,
Ellen Goldberg

David,

You are right David, there are no words to describe the horror that has =
happened, our world will never be the same. I will say a prayer for all =
the people who have perished in this sensless act of terrorism and for =
their families and friends. I will also pray for all of us who are left =
and hope that God will be with us.

I am so relieved you are okay and I pray that your friends and family =
will also be okay. =20

If there is anything I can say or do, please let me know.

Take care and be well.

Debbie

David, I live in California and I have been following the stories very =
closely throughout my days of work and caring for my new baby girl - =
grateful, too, that we are well. You are blessed that you came out =
unscathed. =20

I read your email last night, touched, and yet with a heavy heart, by =
the great family treasure that you spoke of locked in your desk at work. =
I saw no reason to respond, until tonight's news about your office =
building. As I said, you are blessed to have survived such an event, =
and I wanted to simply send my thoughts to you in this difficult time. =
Your story will forever be etched in my memory. =20

Thanks for sharing your story, and despite the probable "loss" of your =
beloved family memento, revel in your survival and in the fact that so =
many people now will recall your great-grandmother's memory rising above =
the horrible events of September 11, 2001.

I work across the street from the World Trade Center in One Liberty =
Plaza.
My office windows were blown in by the blast when the southern tower
collapsed. Thank God I was already on my way home.

Thank God I made it home safely today, without a scratch. I will be
bensching gomel in shul on Thursday.

Locked in my desk sits my great-grandmother's siddur, published in =
Vienna in
1878. I had an appointment to meet with a book conservator tomorrow to =
have
it properly preserved. Inside the cover, my GGM, then my GM, listed the
births, marriages, and deaths in our family from the death of my GGGM =
and
GGGF in 1893 through the marriage of Uncle Charlie in1932. The text is
below.

This siddur survived pogroms in Hungary, the journey to America, and 3
generations. I won't know if it survived today's tragedy until I can get
back into my office, and I don't know when that will be. Thank God I =
have a
scan of the writing inside the cover.

Dear Cousins and Friends,

Today I read the following message on the Jewishgen
Forum, which is the newsgroup devoted to Jewish
genealogy research. Usually the messages are confined
to the subject of genealogy but today exceptions were
allowed. However, the following message is all the more
poignant because it touches on both The Tragedy and
a family history.

I work across the street from the World Trade Center in One Liberty
Plaza. My office windows were blown in by the blast when the southern
tower collapsed. Thank God I was already on my way home.

Thank God I made it home safely today, without a scratch. I will be
bensching gomel in shul on Thursday.

Locked in my desk sits my great-grandmother's siddur, published in
Vienna in 1878. I had an appointment to meet with a book conservator
tomorrow to have it properly preserved. Inside the cover, my GGM, then
my GM, listed the births, marriages, and deaths in our family from the
death of my GGGM and GGGF in 1893 through the marriage of Uncle Charlie
in 1932. The text is below.

This siddur survived pogroms in Hungary, the journey to America, and
3 generations. I won't know if it survived today's tragedy until I
can get back into my office, and I don't know when that will be.
Thank God I have a scan of the writing inside the cover.

As I write this, the media is discussing the possibility of the collapse of
One Liberty Plaza [the NY headquarters of Merrill Lynch]. It's only a
beloved book. . . . . but yesterday the name of Mr. David Simon Bendory
was not added to it's list!

I feel privileged to have been able to look at the front pages in your
granmother's siddur - thank you.

Although it is a great loss, have no regrets about losing it - feel only
thankful that you have been able to have it so far. There are so many of us
who have never been able to have anything from the past.

Our hearts go out to all of you in America.

I don't know if I feel like saying Shanah Tovah, but perhaps now is the time
to say it more than ever.

With best wishes

For the first time since the horrendous suicide disaster I am able to speak
instead of whisper to a Jewish friend in America. I was touched by your
story of the siddur and the journey made by your family. How few people
outside the Jewish community would understand the beauty of your history
together with our sorrow.
I join you in a prayer for peace.

Dear David, I wish to add my prayers for the safe return of the Siddur. If
One Liberty Plaza continues to stand, as I pray it will, in time perhaps
people will be able to enter it and gather their personal effects. You were
wise to copy the pages.

I also am glad you got out in time and made it safely home.

Good Yontif!

Dear David,
I was touched and saddenned to hear of the long road the family siddur made
and the end to which it came.

We Jews have always had to rely on our memory of the past from the beginning
of the modern diaspora 1930 years ago through various expulsions and other
travails. You have those and (at least) the photocopies that you made.

Wishes for a Shana Tova - a year of peace and serenity to us all,

Avi Kay

Dear David,

Thank goodness you weren't injured. As I sat here reading your post, they are
announcing that One Liberty Plaza is in jeopardy of coming down. I pray that
it doesn't and that you are able to retrieve your great grandmother's siddur.
After surviving so much, I just can't believe that it will disappear in a
terrorist attack. We're praying that this treasure survives.

David, if the building crumbles, it could still be inside your desk,
protected, and could possibly be found. I must remain optimistic that these
horrific times will bring us a road to peace.

Your story is haunting me and I felt I just had to contact you. As I watch
TV and see One Liberty Plaza I hope and pray that you will be able to
recover the siddur.

My daughter lives in NJ and until I was able to contact her and discover she
was OK life was a little difficult. I have many relatives in the NY
area and as far as I am aware they are all OK.

Happy New Year to you and family.

David,

I posted this message on our JGS of Montreal list -
as I had done with the first one. What a heartwarming
story that is! A miracle of sorts. We all need some
inspiration, in this terrible time. Thank you so much
for sending that!

L'Shana Tova to you and your family and friends.
Merle

I am so happy for you. Your story brought tears to my eyes. It is so

From your mouth to G-D's ears! It is a miracle and perhaps a good omen on
this beginning of the New Year.

You don't know me, but that doesn't matter at a time like this.

Dear David,

I think that all of our hearts leap with joy for you! We have been
following your sad tale since the horrors of last week, and watching
tensely the fate of the One Liberty Plaza Building.

Perhaps in your personal success there is a message of hope and courage
for us all!

L'Shanah tovah!

Dear David,

A truly remarkable story. I am sure that G-d and your GGM had a hand in

Dear David, I followed with great interest your story of your gggrandmothers
siddur and its amazing
travel through world calamities.Itoo believed when I read that when it
seemed to lost forever that it had a survivors soul and would somehow be
miraculously rescued. I am so happy to see your letter today with the
terrific news of its safe return to you.For some reason or another it is a
story of tremendous hope. All the best Rebecca Spalding, Melbourne,

David,

This gave a wonderfully happy start to my day...we hadn't heard that One
Liberty Plaza is still O.K. We have to find rays of hope where we can
these days. So often I think of my g-grandparents, buried just a very few
miles from all that wreckage, and how they thought they were ensuring
freedom for future generations when they left Hungary in 1880 for their new
home....my grandfather was born on E. 3rd St.

Thanks for the good news this morning,

Faith
NH

Dear David Simon Bendory:

Wanted you to know that I just forwarded your wonderful note, in today's
JewishGen digest, to a close friend. Her cousin is one of the NYC firemen
trapped under the wreckage and the entire family continues to hope and pray
for his safe recovery. I'm hoping that she will be encouraged by your and
your siddur's miraculous escapes from last Tuesday's horror.

May you know many more Rosh HaShanahs with your beloved siddur, and may
they be peaceful and joyous for you and for all of us!

Best regards,
Helen Horwitz

Dear David,

For some reason your story touched me and I felt I needed to let you know.

It truly is a miracle that you survived this horrendous tragedy, but how wonderful
that not only was your Siddur recovered but in time for Rosh HaShannah.

From your mouth to G-d's ears: God willing, there are more miracles to come, in the
form of survivors who
emerge from the debris.

Thank you for letting us know.

Wishing you and yours a happy and sweet New Year, which certainly started right with
the Siddur coming home where it belongs!

Tens of people responded to my earlier story of my GGM's siddur, trapped in
the wreckage of the World Trade Center. Several encouraged me to have faith:
after surviving pogroms in Hungary, the journey to America, and 3
generations of my family, the siddur would surely survive this calamity as
well.

Well, it seems that the presence of my siddur saved One Liberty Plaza, which
is not only standing but also structurally sound -- in spite of earlier
reports of its collapse.

As to my siddur, it has been retrieved and is safely in the hands of a
friend who will personally deliver it to me tonight in time for Rosh
HaShannah.

Earlier, I said that I have no words to describe the catastrophe from which
I narrowly escaped. I now have no words to describe the miracle which has
emerged from that same catastrophe.

God willing, there are more miracles to come, in the form of survivors who
emerge from the debris.

David,
I am very happy for your safety and the recovery of the precious Siddur. It
is a wonderful story for this holiday season. It is so symbolic of the Jewish
people, always rising out of the ashes, the invincibility of the word of G-d,
the committment to carrying the word, the committment to remember.
I am sorry you had to endure such a nightmare as you did last Tuesday. I hope
the new year will bring you peace and healing.

You are correct -- it is not the siddur which saved the building, but the
Hand of God. My message was worded quickly in my excitement, and what was
clear in my thoughts was not clear in my writing. I believe that God saved
the siddur, and that He kept my office intact enough to preserve it. I only
realized that this wasn't clear in my telling as I later recounted the story
to my rabbi.

I just heard today -- in an e-mail about 10 minutes ago -- that the windows
of my office, which faced the Twin Towers, were blown in and that everything
was strewn about. But the siddur is in perfect condition, not a spec of dust
or drop of water on it.

The survival of this siddur is the first of 3 miracles that I personally
witnessed in the 3 days beginning last Sunday.

Shanah tovah,
David
