Don't make us ugly

I know I'm preaching to the converted, but fellow Americans.... don't make us ugly. Don't act out against people because of the color of their skin or they way they are dressed. If you want to do something, donate money, help people in your community... don't be violent, and don't be ignorant. The same reason that we were attacked because "All Americans are evil," is the reason we shouldn't be divided because of petty hatred.

September 11, 2001, or.... The day I became patriotic.

The last time I blogged was a few months ago... it's not often that something goes on in my life that I feel the need to write about, as you can tell. My life is mostly taken up with routine and maybe a few cute cat related anecdotes... but yesterday was different.

Let me explain that I am a former New Yorker, and one thing I can tell you is that you don't fuck with New York. And now I know that you don't fuck with the US either.

I'm still absorbing all of the information. Yesterday was a day of horror. Today is a day of stories. Stories about the innocent that became heroes. Stories about losing our innocence. Welcome to the new century. I can't say it any better than this editorial from a reporter from the Miami Herald:

We'll go forward from this moment
by Leonard Pitts Jr

It's my job to have something to say.

They pay me to provide words that help make sense of
that which troubles the American soul. But in this
moment of airless shock when hot tears sting
disbelieving eyes, the only thing I can find to say,
the only words that seem to fit, must be addressed to
the unknown author of this suffering.

You monster. You beast. You unspeakable bastard.

What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's
attack on our World Trade Center, our Pentagon, us?
What was it you hoped we would learn? Whatever it was,
please know that you failed.

Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned
your cause.

Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our
resolve.

Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us
together.

Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and
quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social,
political and class division, but a family
nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of
expending tremendous emotional energy on pop cultural
minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball team's
misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too,
spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and
material goods, and maybe because of that, we walk
through life with a certain sense of blithe
entitlement. We are fundamentally decent, though --
peace-loving and compassionate. We struggle to know
the right thing and to do it. And we are, the
overwhelming majority of us, people of faith,
believers in a just and loving God.

Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all
of this makes us weak. You're mistaken. We are not
weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot be
measured by arsenals.

IN PAIN

Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning and we are
in shock. We're still grappling with the unreality of
the awful thing you did, still working to make
ourselves understand that this isn't a special effect
from some Hollywood blockbuster, isn't the plot
development from a Tom Clancy novel. Both in terms of
the awful scope of their ambition and the probable
final death toll, your attacks are likely to go down
as the worst acts of terrorism in the history of the
United States and, probably, the history of the world.
You've bloodied us as we have never been bloodied
before.

But there's a gulf of difference between making us
bloody and making us fall. This is the lesson Japan
was taught to its bitter sorrow the last time anyone
hit us this hard, the last time anyone brought us such
abrupt and monumental pain. When roused, we are
righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When
provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear any
suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the
pursuit of justice.

I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know
my people, as you, I think, do not. What I know
reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread
of the future.

In the days to come, there will be recrimination and
accusation, fingers pointing to determine whose
failure allowed this to happen and what can be done to
prevent it from happening again. There will be
heightened security, misguided talk of revoking basic
freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered,
chastened, sad. But determined, too. Unimaginably
determined.

THE STEEL IN US

You see, the steel in us is not always readily
apparent. That aspect of our character is seldom
understood by people who don't know us well. On this
day, the family's bickering is put on hold.

As Americans we will weep, as Americans we will mourn,
and as Americans, we will rise in defense of all that
we cherish.

So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It
occurs to me that maybe you just wanted us to know the
depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider
the message received. And take this message in
exchange: You don't know my people. You don't know
what we're capable of. You don't know what you just
started.

But you're about to learn.

Ugh, I suck!

This will be short because I'm having trouble posting from my mac at work... Don't know what the problem is.

OK, That Worked

I just changed my template to one that was designed by
LJC. I am hopelessly devoted to her blog. I wish I were more like her in all her craftiness and bloggy glory.

Someday I'll have to tell you about my kitten whose nose fell off... really!

It's a Sunshine Day

We had our big walk-a-thon fundraiser for the animal shelter yesterday. The weather was beautiful and we had a good turnout. There's nothing better than seeing a couple hundred dogs mingling and wagging their tails.

Zooey is doing really well. She's found all the sunny spots that are good for sleeping. She loves bounding up the 3 tier cat tree. She's learning to play well with others. My cats have a routine where they'll take turns attacking the flying feather. She's adapted well and knows when she can take her turn. She really likes it when we cook! Last night we made seitan kebabs on the grill and a cucumber/dill salad. She stuck her head right in my food!

Dingle Dingle Dingle Dingle

I had to take off Zooey's collar this morning because she spent all night last night running around the house with Ubi. Her bell was ringing all night long! She was really happy when we came home from work. I played with her and the feather toy for a while, until Rocco decided he wanted to play. I filled up the bird feeder out front, so now she is really happy since there are birds and squirrels to watch.

Zooey comes to visit

I'm watching Jennifer's kitty while she is in the U.K. Zooey has been having a good time so far. She likes it when we make french fries! She also loves to sit on the sofa on the sun porch and look out the window.

Whew! Where the hell have I been??

Okay, so I managed to blow off most of the month of February and the better part of March. Now that Spring has sprung, I'm feeling frisky and renewed. My birthday (March 17, St. Patrick's Day) has passed with little to report other than a great bowl of Shoyu Ramen for lunch and Cheese Fondue for dinner.

I was thinking maybe I would turn this blog into a cat diary, kind of likewww.blackiecam.com. Although what do my cats have to record about their day to day activity?
Hugo: Got up and ate, went back to lay down on my heating pad.
Charlie: Moved to a sunnier window.
Ubi: I wonder if we're having spaghetti for dinner tonight?
Rocco: la la la la (he's cute, but dumb.)

Also, I've decided that internet menus are way better than internet porn. If I find out we're going out to a different restaurant for lunch or dinner, I'll get online to try to find their menu. I end up salivating over it and reading portions aloud. Totally better than porn!

The promise of free fonts

Why is it that when I go in search of mac fonts, these so called "free font" sites just lead me from one to the other in an endless loop featuring no fonts to download! Start here if this seems like fun to you!

Switched My Host, Looked for New Credit Cards

I recently switched my host for this site to a much cheaper one and when researching cheapie hosts, I used findwebspace.com. They have great reviews, plus feedback from people who use the host. Very thorough! I ended up going with Next Generation Hosting and haven't
