dj: Mjcurrent: yessir globaldj: the movie was total crap. Mjcurrent: oh, this again? globaldj: Tell me WHY you liked it. Mjcurrent: because the narrative structure totally drew me in and I had a lot of fun figuring things out as it went along. Mjcurrent: also, it was funny and well-acted. Mjcurrent: but mostly it was the narrative. Mjcurrent: I'll give you this much: Mjcurrent: that if the character had a normal memory Mjcurrent: and if the movie was toward beginning-to-end in a conventional way Mjcurrent: it would not have been very interesting. Mjcurrent: but of course making it that way would require changing the crux of the film, his memory problem, and thus would change the whole movie. Mjcurrent: and it wouldn't be the same anymore anyway. Mjcurrent: so it's almost a moot question. globaldj: it's not moot, to me. Mjcurrent: why? Mjcurrent: the whole issue of his lack of memory was what the movie was all about! Mjcurrent: you can't just look at it as an assortment of violent acts and pretend you're considering the whole movie. globaldj: I never thought it was that hard to figure out what was going on. It wasn't at all believable to me. I think the movie would have been interesting if it was 12-15 minutes long. Mjcurrent: of course, you've never been one to write a movie off for reasons that, say, make any sense. globaldj: After that it was tedium. globaldj: you are always SO insulting. Mjcurrent: Believability was kind of a side point. globaldj: it pisses me off. Mjcurrent: ok, sorry! Mjcurrent: I was kidding anyway. Mjcurrent: I don't think it had any obligation to be realistic. Mjcurrent: so did you know before the ending that Sammy Jankis didn't exist? globaldj: There have been a SLEW of mediocre movies recently with weak plots, "narrative gimmicks" and mildly interesting ideas "I'm a Ghost" "I'm unbreakable" "I have no memory" in which a white male protagonist runs around acting violent and making some mediocre jokes. Enough is enough! Mjcurrent: see, this belongs on rme.net. Mjcurrent: I thought the plot was strong. globaldj: rme.net is coming soon. Mjcurrent: as for the gimmick, I'm not sure it has that much in common with Sixth Sense. globaldj: i didn't think the plot was strong *at all* it was a B-detective movie plot. Mjcurrent: Sixth Sense was kind of a one-trick pony. globaldj: I HATE that movie . Mjcurrent: I liked it but there wasn't much to it. Mjcurrent: I think there was more to Memento. Mjcurrent: I haven't seen Unbreakable. globaldj: I havent either - no need. Mjcurrent: so maybe I'm just not seeing enough of the kinds of movies you're talking about to get tired of them, and then not like Memento. globaldj: I think that also, in general, the craze around Memento just shows how terrible movies are getting. That people are looking at that as a groundbreaking movie. Mjcurrent: right. Mjcurrent: I think you're right there. Mjcurrent: directors with any studio backing are entirely too timid. Mjcurrent: movies can do so much more and most people just never do it. globaldj: It's got 2-4 interesting ideas, a sexy femme fatale and a fairly pedestrian plot. But bext movie of the year? When I'm around people talking about Memento I get sick and sad that we've sunk to that level. Mjcurrent: and audiences never see those movies. globaldj: There are so many great movies. globaldj: We could watch 3 a week and never finish. Mjcurrent: I still don't understand how you can call it "fairly pedestrian," though. globaldj: I don't see what's NOT fairly pedestrian about it. Mjcurrent: Admit it: the large majority of movies do not have Memento's narrative structure. Mjcurrent: It's just a freaking fact! Mjcurrent: I don't care if you like the structure or not. Mjcurrent: you're perfectly entitled not to like it. globaldj: Sure, but that narrative structure is NO BIG DEAL at all to me. It's a mix between Pulp Fiction & The Matrix globaldj: Nothing more, nothing less. Mjcurrent: but you can't call it pedestrian! Mjcurrent: OK, fine, but don't call it "pedestrian" or "standard B-movie" or whatever. globaldj: Standard B-movie - NO QUESTION Mjcurrent: You're so ridiculous. globaldj: Man kills drug dealer. Mjcurrent: Just admit it: most B-movies aren't structured like Memento. Mjcurrent: Man kills drug dealer is one part of Memento. globaldj: There's a difference between the structure and the plot. globaldj: the plot is B-movie and pedestrian. globaldj: The structure is different. globaldj: "different" Mjcurrent: The structure affects the plot. globaldj: "unusual" "rare" sure. Mjcurrent: How many movies end with the main character taking advantage of his memory deficiency to trick himself into eventually killing his ally? Mjcurrent: I'm just asking. I don't care if you liked that about it or not. Mjcurrent: you can't separate the structure from the plot. globaldj: You CAN separate the two. globaldj: Buy the DVD and watch the scenese backwards. the dude still has no memory. Mjcurrent: well, I think we've pretty much run this into the ground. Mjcurrent: it's just a fundamental difference in how we experienced it. Mjcurrent: I was excited by the structure, and you weren't, and that's all. globaldj: Memento - more than the death of American film, it's the death of American film critics. Mjcurrent: I would like to think that "the death of American film" title can go more to dreck like Pearl Harbor. Mjcurrent: which, to be fair, I haven't seen. Mjcurrent: let's keep in mind who the real enemies are here. globaldj: It's the old Fox or the Wolf debate. globaldj: I know Pearl Harbor is total shit. (the wolf) globaldj: Memento is total shit disguised as indy something something. it's the fox. globaldj: You Can Count on Me - THAT's a beautiful movie! globaldj: Show Me Love / Jails Hospitals & Hip-Hop / The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg / globaldj: and one more, I forgot. Mjcurrent: color of paradise globaldj: didn't see it - BUT it was an Iranian film - The Wind will Carry Us globaldj: Five GREAT movies from last year globaldj: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0150662 globaldj: http://www.currentfilm.com/dvdreviews2/fugitivesedvd.html

dj: But White House spokesman Ari Fleischer was adamant today when asked whether the president would ask Americans to stop using so much energy. "That's a big 'no,'" Fleischer said. "The president believes that it's an American way of life, that it should be the goal of policy-makers to protect the American way of life. The American way of life is a blessed one." The president, he said, considers Americans' heavy use of energy a "reflection of the strength of our economy, of the way of life that the American people have come to enjoy."

dj: Stephen Sommers, the director of The Mummy Returns, tries to make like Spielberg, but he hasn't the chops. What he is, in fact, is a CGI fool. He's quite obviously a lightweight. My instinct is to go farther and call him a pestilence. He doesn't know how to make a movie; all he knows is how to shoot stuff and then cut it together so it shakes and rumbles and the more easily seduced among us go, "Cool!"

dj: Is it true that Gwyneth Paltrow is your role model and that you wrote her a letter?
Yes, she wrote me back and I carry the letter around with me. It's one of my most prized possessions. I couldn't believe she wrote back.
Do you respond to your fan mail?
I try to respond to as many as possible. I try to send a picture. Sometimes I even call if they leave a phone number. It's hard to get to every single one.
Now that you've played Hepburn, is there a person you'd like to play you?
If somebody was going to play me I would want it to be Natalie Portman.
Did you mind when Anna Faris made fun of you in Scary Movie?
I just thought she was hysterical. She made fun of me so well, she completely got all the weird things I do with my hands and my arms and the weird face things I do. I was so excited somebody was making fun because I make fun of me all the time. It just cracked me up so I had to send her flowers to say thank you.

dj: Bobby Valentine was in a restaurant recently when the pain piercing through his lower back was so excruciating that all he could do to find relief was trudge into the bathroom and lie on the floor. Valentine propped his feet up on the toilet seat and prayed for the pain to subside.

This was not a singular experience for Valentine, who has rested his damaged vertebrae on restaurant bathrooms for more than a month. Valentine would usually lock the door so he could endure his misery in private. But, in this instance, Valentine was so debilitated that he forgot to lock it and another person meandered in. The man was shocked to see someone, never mind the manager of the Mets, lying near the toilet paper dispenser.

"I told the guy it wasn't worth an explanation," Valentine said, "and got up and left."

Pratt slams unbeaten discourse

Hyderabad - Propelled by an elegant unbeaten knock of 114 by Garry Pratt, England reached 256 for 4 on the opening day of the third and final under-19 Test against India at Lal Bahadur Stadium here today.

Joing skipper Ian Bell after the openers were dismissed by Amit Mishra for 66, Pratt dominated the the day's proceedings and registered a 102-run partnership for the 3rd wicket.

Pratt toyed with the India bowlers during his unfinished essay of 114 runs of 194 balls in 270-minute stay at the wicket.

He scored runs with a flourish lofting spinner Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan over long-on and punished Mishra with a second 6 over long-off. Pratt, who scored 28 and 66 in the first Test at Mumbai, compiled his 114 with the help of 13 fours scored all around the wicket.

Playing the role of anchor, skipper Bell rotated the strike back to in-form Pratt wherever possible and in the process scored 46 off 132 balls including 6 fours before being traped leg before wicket by Dharmichand at the fag end of the day.

dj: Saturday afternoon, Turk Wendell came into the Mets game in the eighth inning, but realized that he didn't know the signs. So The Turk pretended that he swallowed a bug, bending over on the mound, choking.

Todd Pratt came to the mound. Turk asked for the signs. "I didn't want everyone to know I didn't know them," he told Pratt.
