from soapbox girls: Bizarrely, the Backstreet Boys have spoken out against going to war. Here's Kevin's take on things: "I just think we're a little bit of an arrogant nation, and maybe this is a bit of a humbling experience... it raises the question in my mind, What has our government done to evoke or provoke this action, that maybe we don't know about?" Who knew the BSB could be more thoughtful than your average TV reporter? (via mimi, who of course has much useful & insightful commentary up on this tragedy)

war isn't a game, says naomi klein. many good articles out there as an antidote to the hawkishness & racism we're being fed. i'll try to blog some of them.

all of chicago has been asked to read the same book @ the same time (to kill a mockingbird). my first reaction was: this is daft! then it changed to: how cool! & when will nyc do the same?

the intro to this article (on you grow girl's main page) says that you can, using this method, produce compost even if you live in an apartment--how exciting! the actual article itself doesn't say this, though, which is a little confusing/worrying.

From an editorial on the Pacifica Crisis in the latest Nation:
Change as in letting thugs take over WBAI? The editorial also asks the Pacifica board to start respecting its employees. Yes, they should, but they are clearly committed to unilaterally ripping the rug out from under the community that makes up 'community radio'. Turns out that the Nation has an interest in the outcome at Pacifica that is not mentioned in this editorial either.
The LA Times is actually covering Pacifica now. Today's edition has an article about Amy Goodman's exile from the WBAI studios [archived here in perpetuity courtesy of marxmail.org]

We're stuck with the misbegotten cretin for another couple of years, but Jesse Helms is not going to run for senate again. Gloria Steinem's reaction was less vitriolic than I would have liked, but Hunter Grey made up for it bigtime.

the tanzanian gov't recently shut down a dozen periodicals because it said their photos of bikini-clad women & titillating articles contributed to the spread of AIDS. (hopefully the "partners.nytimes.com" link will work--if not, just delete "partners" fr. the url & log in w/some fakeass name & e-mail addy...)

Yesterday I happened upon an excellent article in Tricycle about the commodification of Buddhism and the conflict between the Consumerist ethos here in the US and the Dharma. Sadly, the entire article isn't online [commodification of the article itself. Boo!], but there is a message board thread about it.
