PIXELPONY.COM: Derek Odegard "Will work for food."

Pixelpony.com is the personal web site of yours truly, Derek Odegard. The structure and tone of this website has always been dictated by my station in life: first as a student of web design and advanced HTML skills, then as an over-worked partner in a web programming company, then as a freelancer dabbling in photography, writing, and emerging web technologies, and finally, now, as a recent transplant to New York City in search of a job.

I am looking for a position programming useful, interesting web applications. Some particular areas that interest me: content management, distributed computing using XML over HTTP, advanced object-oriented JavaScript programming, and implementation of complex designs using CSS.

I am not only an expert at programming for the web, I also enjoy it thoroughly. I have extensive experience programming on the server-side (ASP, ADO, T-SQL, XML, XSLT, etc.), the client-side (JavaScript, DOM, HTML, CSS, etc.), and even in between (XML-RPC). I have good design instincts for a programmer (in addition to this site, please see meaningless.com), and excellent communication skills.

For more information, please see my resume, or browse my code samples, or get in touch with me at derek@schwa.com.

9/11/2001 I'm fine. Fighter jets overhead.... Hospital in my neighborhood unable to take blood donations because of a lack of equipment. I'm told I need a "donor card" (whatever that is), so I won't be able to donate anyway.... Everyone I know survived, apparently. 9/7/2001 Responded to an ad today that was perfect for me:"Experience [sic] WEB developer with 5+ years experience using the following: ASP, IIS, JavaScript, VBScript, COM, ADO, Search Server, MS SQL Server.... Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with both technical and non-technical people.... CANDIDATE must start immediatly!!! [sic]"So, after sending my resume, I got an immediate response:"Do u live in NY or NJ?"This struck me as a bizarre question to ask in reference to a Manhattan job (who cares where I plan on commuting from?), especially when my address is on the resume I had just emailed to her (as well as on my website, which I also invited her to view). Nonetheless, I responded and let her know that I live in Queens."Is there a number I can reach you..now!"Two minutes later, we are talking on the phone. Her:"Now I need you to be completely honest with me: forget about school, forget about network management, forget about tech support, just tell me how much actual IT experience you have."Me:"I come from an agency background where I have served as the lead technical person on creative teams. I don't have very much experience working with IT."Her:"So, you're not a lead web developer?"Me:"I was the lead application developer-- the main technical person-- on teams of website developers."Her:"Ok, well the ad you responded to was for a Lead Web Developer. We'll keep your resume on file."I must figure out how to handle this situation differently in the future. It's wearying to miss out on a job which perfectly matches my skills because of a strange (but probably solvable) communication problem. 9/6/2001 New design with a "job search" theme to the content. Probably some glitches to work out over the next few days. 8/16/2001 Posting with blogBuddy. Did it work? 8/13/2001 Posting with RadioUserland. Did it work? 7/29/2001 More reading material: Processing XML with Java, Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General (1999). 7/27/2001 Articles I want to read when I find some time: Interface Design; Best Practices in Object-Oriented API Design in Java, Tracing the Synapses of Spirituality, Higher Order Programming in Javascript. 6/13/2001 "Experienced web developer seeking senior-level programming position in New York City...."
