Kids, Sports, and Associations Its a never ending story we have all been a part of. We want our little Susies and Johnnys to be the stars of their atheletic teams. All too often as parents, coaches, assistants, and association leaders we tend to forget that the game is for the kids. My own area happens to be experiencing this. It is a simple fact that many associations and small boom towns have happen. You grow and there are personality differences. Therefore it becomes an adult affair rather than the childs. So...I did some research as is common for me to do and have found some great websites that can provide some important lessons for Parents, Coaches, and Leaders. First and foremost we must remember it is for the children. I as a parent don't care if my child is a star, because I NEVER WAS athletic and not all kids are. My kids are gifted with athletic talents. However, they choose it and they practice. You know what the old cliche is about practicing. My point is it is my children's choosing to play and force is made. More often kids quit because of various problems that happened on a youth team or with a youth coach. Unfortunately, "Up to 75% of children leave team sports by age 13, and sometimes they leave sports for socially" unacceptable activities. a direct quote from "Christ Johnson click to visit the website. His website gives coaching ideas, training, ideas for dealing with children. It is wonderful!! Now onto another good website I found today. The National Alliance for Youth Sports Code of Ethics (NAYSC) has a website that could be read by all. An example is the following Code of Ethics: I hereby pledge to provide positive support to all youth sports programs in my community, to administer youth sports programs with professionalism and in the best interests of the children involved by following the Youth Sports Administrators’ Code of Ethics: I will run youth sports programs for the children involved, not the adults. I will ensure that I am knowledgeable in the area of youth sports administration. I will do my best to provide a safe playing situation for all participants. I will provide support for coaches, officials and parents to provide a positive and enjoyable experience for all. I will require all coaches and officials to be trained in the responsibilities of being a volunteer within the organization and that they uphold the NYSCA/NYSOA Codes of Ethics. I will implement and enforce the National Standards For Youth Sports. I promise to keep informed about current issues involving youth sports programs. © National Alliance For Youth Sports I see people talking about problems they had and they never received an answer and I wonder what kind of ethics could there be? Do the coaches receive training? I then have to admit that the CAA is truly a group of volunteers and maybe they didn't have to have training and rules of ethics etc. until the growth in recent years. Oftentimes growth can be overpowering. Problems will happen, people will be people. However sometimes courtesy, response, and kindness can put out what could be a large fire. I think we all want to be defensive because we only do the best we can, and after all we are all just volunteers in this world of Youth competive sports. However, maybe by providing this writing, maybe by posting the above url's, we could find some hope. I want my family happy and that is first. However, my children should play with their friends from school, not in another district because we didn't get the response we had hoped for when we dealt with a few problems. Remember problems come with growth, and solving said problems results in continued growth. Not solving problems can result in more problems, and more negativity and we all know in basic math what that results in. A negative plus a negative is always going to be a negative. Welcome! 2000 is over. On a personal level, the year was great!! On a professional level the year was a whirlwind. I work for It Magazine , and WebMasters.net. As their webmaster, and I worked hard to make changes, learn new technology, and learn to program. Trying to do it all doesn't always work I have discovered. I followed technology from all over, including keeping up with standards W3C. I read more technology books, and spent hours at night on the web. Oftentimes, we spend our lives trying to keep up with the crowd. It was over the last year that I discovered something that has always been...I am not part of any crowd, yet a single person with strong creative ability. Therefore, it is my decision to focus on my greatest of abilities and let them speak for themselves this year. The year 2001 I am going to write like I used to, with heart and soul, not just as a means to an end. I am going to share my photography, share what it is I see, share my hobby. I am also a creative web designer and can create Flash images. I realize I am no developer, nor am I a programmer, I can program where I need to and understand the concept behind programming. I am a great Digital Artist. It is these items I am choosing to share here on Digitalmama.net. |
