After writing an article on the tabloids and paedophiles, I followed it up with an attack on tabloid tv. Then, I went on to complain about the lack of popularity of classical music. All this whingeing... it's almost like I resent the people on whom popular culture centres.

What? hand driers? - what have you got against them?

I can't wait to hear that the Queen Mother has died. (Note: not actually true.) Hopefully we'll get a holiday out of it, but I suspect they'll just cancel the football again. Like when Di popped her clogs. We're not all monarchists, you know?
Funny the things that'll revive a comatose weblog, isn't it? ;-)

An end to the Safeway nonsense, and Tesco blot their copy book with a hastily composed sign.

And now, and in technicolor (or colour...) another update - this time we pick apart a simple leaflet from a block paving company... have I nothing better to do?

I hate computers. Computers hate me. End of story.

Arse to Coronation Street is what I say. A bizarre plot about an internet chatroom pervert went from the bizarre to the plain stupid. I know the program is written by budding comedy writers, but did they have to prove that their writing team is incapable of doing psychological drama?
Oh yeah, and safeway wrote me a letter, which was nice.
There's been a bit of an absence of output from yours truly for the past few weeks. The tap is open again, it's just a drip at the moment, but I hope it will develop into a full stream in due course.

Jakob Nielsen does it again. In his latest AlertBox column, "Error Message Guidelines", the summary states:
Established wisdom holds that good error messages are polite, precise, and constructive. The Web brings a few new guidelines: Make error messages clearly visible, reduce the work required to fix the problem, and educate users along the way. I'm sorry, but that's crap. Those guidelines apply to all user interfaces. Maybe the article itself is more sensible, but I've yet to read it. But then, maybe if he wrote more sensible summaries I'd be more inclined to read the tosh he puts out. Don't get me wrong - the guidelines in that summary are very sensible - it's just his making-an-article-out-of-nothing stuff that boils my urine. The guy's got a licence to print money if he's doing consultancy like this.

If the guys from 37 signals actually grace this site with a visit (I sent them a link to the article about Outlook's virus warning), please don't crucify my terrible navigation. I just don't have the time for this stuff (witness the lack of updates). :-(

Today is a good day. I don't know why, but it's started brilliantly. First I wake up 10 minutes before my alarm, feeling like I've overslept by 4 hours (i.e. feeling very rested). The next thing I know, I'm washing the car before leaving for work. It's 7:20am and I'm washing the god-damned car! WTF?!? :-)

Following my trip to webreview.com, I headed off to webdeveloper.com where I found this peach:
JavaScript "Boinger Window" Launches a popup window that continually switches back and forth between two settable sizes. The cycle time and location are settable and may switch back and forth in the timing cycle. Cool! No! That is not cool! It's sick! And the same goes for your cool plasma effect! When will people learn that just because you can doesn't mean you should?

It's a long time since I went domain-name-guessing in a hunt for web design magazines. First stop today, though, served only to remind me not to bother again. Looking at webreview.com, the first thing I read was this:
"Most WebReview.com readers have some, if not all, Adobe and Macromedia Web-related software. How we each use it differs, but the goal is always the same: creating great looking sites." I figure I must be some sort of HTML purist, as there are two things in there that immediately rub me up the wrong way. - Macromedia - makers of Flash and Dreamweaver, god-sends to thousands of graphic design-fixated HTML-illiterates
- The idea that the goal of web design is making sites that look good. Sod usable, rewarding, entertaining sites - they just want ones that look good.
Tossers.

You think Newcastle United had an impressive injury list? Try this for size:
- Painful joints in both hands
- Blisters and tender skin all over the right hand
- Crimson, egg-sized lumps on the inside of each knee and on one of the vertebrae in the middle of the back
- Bruised hips and ribs
- Weakened forearms & RSI-type feelings in wrists
- Aching shoulders
- Strained left hamstring
- A stonking headache
Is karting really worth all of this punishment? It is when you get a trophy for it. :) Report to follow. BTW, the reason for lack of updates is, yet again, hardware upgrades. Things should be resolved by this coming weekend.
