This story is just nuts - six kids in Idaho holed up in their house with "27 dogs and ammunition." I know the story's old, but I don't actually read the news and so this sort of thing surprises me now and then. The reporting on it has been pretty horrible, too - "CNN Correspondent Lilian Kim reported that the children have been surviving on lake water and lilypad soup." How mediaeval.

Getting back to normal after a nice parental visit this weekend - we went out for sushi, which was a big hit, walked around Yorkville and laughed at the furs, and this morning went to Future's for three eggs with hash browns, coffee and toast. Mmm-hmm. Apparently my brother went to see Depeche Mode last night at the Air Canada Centre, but the little twerp forgot to call me. What can you do...he's family.
Speaking of family, they brought an extra birthday present. Wherever there's trouble, you'll soon find me:

Just got back from Hart House at U of T, where I go to the gym. Got that post-workout feeling...the sort of feeling where you go to do your laundry and you can't even lift the bottle of detergent. That, my friends, is time well spent. Incinerdentally, about ten days ago we were finishing up a rehearsal for Antigone when Chad ran into the shop, totally out of breath, demanding a fire extinguisher. "Hart House is on fire," he said, and while I believed him, I couldn't convince myself that it was actually real. I must have freaked him out, acting all nonchalant as a cool cucumber, gave him the little orange fire extinguisher in the shop and he ran off. So I sauntered downstairs, unlocked my bike and noticed a huge black announcement of smoke from in front of Hart House, rode over and saw the picnic tables on the patio drowned in ten-foot flames. Incredibly beautiful, it was, but when the fire spread to the ivy on the building facade my heart leapt - I've spent a huge amount of my "spare" time at University in that building, working out, rehearsing various plays, auditioning, performing at the gorgeous theatre, listening to speakers like Robert Lepage and John Ralston Saul and Tomson Highway. Two firetrucks appeared just as the fire was starting to look really dangerous and short work was made of the fire. Patty had Tom's camera and was taking pictures; the police questioned her because, apparently, arsonists have a penchant for photographing their work...which makes sense, I suppose. I really thought the fire was an exceptional thing of beauty.
Today, there were new picnic tables, everything had been cleaned, and only a huge bald spot in the ivy and the faint smell of ashes reminded me of the whole affair.

I've got a job interview (victory dance) with the YWCA Canada, for web and marketing assistance. Sweet, and wish wish wish me luck. But first, off to Future's with celeste to read....and maybe get an iced moccacino (served in a pint glass). Summer has never been so good, somehow, even with no money and no prospects of love. It's bloody hot, I've had a good number of sunburns. Life is good.

No, it's not just a sudden impulse to confuse all and sundry; I have bought happeningfish.org, and soon enough that's where this puppy will live. Like redesign? I do.

Mmm-hmm...after scrubbing floors with my tongue at !ndigo (no, they don't really make us do that...bad for business) on my birthday, I went out with celeste, janice, and tyler to New Generation Sushi on Bloor, our favourite maki makin' machine in the neighbourhood, right next to Future's (where their legendary mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy goes for a scant $2.33). Had some crazy thing called a Dragon Red, with these crazy ornate endpieces with tempura shrimp sticking out, avocado, and salmon that just melted to the touch of a tongue. And of course, one can't forget the green tea ice cream. Check it out - good sushi for few beans.

To anyone who likes cake - tomorrow, the 12th, is my birthday. I'm turning older than I'd like and younger than I should be...if that makes any sense at all.

Opening night - small but very very appreciative audience. Went for 3.50 martinis (tee many martoonis) at the Labyrinth with the cast and crew; wound up drinking all kinds of things called "purple haze" and "silk stockings" while arguments erupted about world war ii and I developed a crush on a girl with a sandpaper voice. Life = not too bad.

oyyyyyyy. Drinks at the Ferret and Firkin after two dress rehearsals of Antigone tonight - opens tomorrow. And the show is heck good at this point - Andrew's script makes great demands, Tom's direction has a clear path, and Janice's design makes it all look fucking beautiful. On the downside, I spent a few minutes onstage in "just died" pose at the end of the play whilst food-coloured corn syrup proceeded to sludge itself, in a highly inevitable way, into my left nostril and make breathing impossible. I can't wait to get an audience in there, syrupy nose or otherwise. Tom may love musicals, but he sure makes gore sexy.

Cue-to-cue tonight...almost got through (thruff) the whole play, then went out for lots and lots of drinks. Oh christ it's 3:am. I have to start painting the set in 7 hours. I love theatre...goodnight and arf.
