New: Archives!
hey guys .... eliina -- i hope your trip's going well, and that anna's gotten better at those sudden stops =) i'm just hanging out at home, seeing my family. only one of my friends from high school is within driving distance, and she's an hour away, so it's been a little lonely round here. i'm still gathering up stuff, i'm not really sure what i have. i know i have one big conference room chair we can put in the living room, my parents might let me take some end tables, and i just bought a microwave, before i checked this and found out eliina had one (eek). but it was really cheap. so i'll use that later, i'm sure. have we found a t.v. yet? i just have a v.c.r. and i have a tea press! it makes really good tea. i also found a big wok-ish pan, and a pot with a steamer thingy. yay for estate sales.

i think i might have a router. last summer cleo and i both had computers in our apartment, and we had a cable modem and a little box that let us both hook our computers up to it. the thing sat outside the door of my room at crc for a year, and i think i packed it up with my other junk. so maybe it's sitting in my garage right now. or maybe i threw it out.

Hey, Eliina Biina - For some reason, I got this urge to check this thing today - weirdness. Anyhoo, I think the major issues in the e-mail have been: 1) The deposit thing with Barry is cleared up. All the apps/money is there. Those people are stupid. 2) Linz wants to know if we'd like to get a cable modem for $5/mo the first three months and $11/mo after that. We'd need to buy a router, tho, which costs like $100. 3) First month's rent is due Sept. 1 made out to ABBB Partnership, 860 Hinman, Evanston. It needs to be in a cashiers check or money order, not a personal check. And I think we're splitting it even since we haven't picked rooms yet - that'd be $537.50 each. It's good to hear you're having a good time. I miss you and can't wait to see you in about two weeks! luvya, tara

hey guys,
i'm on the road with my poster sale job, and i've been in north carolina for the past week. everything is going really well, although my sales partner anna and i are getting kind of tired. i opened my mailbox for the first time in about two weeks and saw a couple of apartment related-emails. the computer at the library where i am right now takes a while to load and for me to open an email, and we can't spend much time here right now, so could one of you perhaps copy and paste those emails and post them to this? i hope to be able to check it again some time soon, and perhaps i'll read them before one of you reads this and posts, but i thought i'd ask. the mountains here in western north carolina are beautiful. we're heading to smoky mountain national park as soon as we can find a fucking fax machine. we've been misdirected several times, and office supply stores and such aren't very common around here. see y'all soon! love, eliina

Hmmm ... I don't really remember that part of the apartment to know if we'd have room or not for another couch. But we can always try and sell it/take it back if it just doesn't work - or it would probably fit in your big-ass room, Eliina :-) It's up to you whether you want to deal with getting it to Evanston. Oooh, I'm so excited!

tara, you rock my world! thanks for looking into all of that stuff. i can't edit your message for some reason, so i'm doing my own. i've got kitchen chairs and a kitchen table. i can also bring plates, glasses, mugs, silverware, cooking dishes, a big cookbook, a microwave, an extra fridge, a phone, a coat rack, an armchair for the living room, and a wooden rocking chair if we want it. i just checked with lana, and they'll sell us the couch for $50. i'll send her the check and we can settle things later. i think i can bring another couch too, an aunt of mine might be getting rid of hers. it's smaller than the big sectional we're getting. tara, do you think we could fit the other couch in the area at the top of the stairs where they had the rabbit cages?

hey guys! tracy came down for the fourth, and amanda and i visited tara in boston last weekend... it was so good to see everyone, and we talked about next year a little bit... definitely excited to move in and decorate and be all artistic. amanda and i are down in the basement apartment in d.c. (finally) but it's hard to really make it our own, since we're only here for another month, really.... patrick and i got back together a couple days ago and we're gonna see how that works out. right now i'm really happy, so that's definitely a good thing. work is going ok, i don't like personal finance or anything, so i'm pretty bored right now... but it's not like i have to work there forever, and the people are really nice. i've been hanging out with some of the other interns in the asme program and at my magazine, and some of them are pretty cool. it's hard to really go out cuz most places are 21 and over, but we've found some cool ethnic restaurants and coffee shops and a few independent bookstores to keep us entertained. hope all's well with you....

oh, and amanda ... i know what you mean that coming back home doesn't feel as weird as everyone says it should. i thought it meant i hadn't taken full advantage of my experience and become *immersed in the culture*. but it seems like you were pretty immersed (you had a ghana boy, for gosh sakes!), and you feel the same way. yay for having another insecurity dashed :-)

hellooo, girlies. guess what i realized as i logged on here? as of tonight, we are all back in the same country! yay!!! let's just keep it like that for a while, shall we? well, i guess i can't make any promises, so i won't make you guys either ... but i'll enjoy it while it's there.
i'm just procrastinating starting my int'l ethics paper. i hate that class so much. you'd think i'd be motivated to do the paper by the simple fact that after i'm done with it, i'm done with the class. but alas - it's already evening, and i haven't even read the topic question. i hate papers in general now - probably partly because i've written two in the past two days while being double over in sickness and pain. but i'm better today so there's no excuse for getting started early on this one.
as for apartment things - yay for red tables! and remember, i have bean bag chairs. the big, comfy kind. and there's a cool fair trade shop in evanston where we can certainly fulfill our decorating needs (that aren't already met by our own travels and creativity, of course). they even have soap dishes fairly traded from india.
ok, back to the real stuff. talk to you all later - luvyas, tara

reading week=lots o' work. fun thing: my mom bought us a table and four chairs for the apartment at an antique show/flea market thingy she went to this weekend. they need need a coat of paint and a little tinkering, but i love doing that kind of stuff. the table is currently black but i'm thinking bright red would be fun, eh? back to work, just saying hi. love, eliina

hey girls,
now, don't go into shock er anything... yes, after three and a half months of slow-ass, unreliable internet connections, i'm actually back in a place where i can do more than just get frustrated with how many minutes i pay for just waiting for things to send. what all that rambling meant is i hadn't read this page since i left for ghana. it gave me the same sensation that i get from looking back on journal entries--even though i'm getting the stories late, i'm getting them in the voice they were first spoken in, which means i don't get the cliff's notes version that the passing of time often diminishes stories to. let's see, what can i say... well, i've been back in the states for about a week, and i can't decide which is stranger: being back, or the fact that being back isn't all that weird. maybe things will make more sense when i'm not "home." right now, the only thing about this place that is mine is my family...and they really don't change all that much. ever. what else...well, i've been lucky enough to talk to plenty of voices from the past... and all that has reminded me that most of my fondest memories from college are still those from freshman year. well, i should get going. after this short novelette, you girls will be happy i haven't been a more consistent poster ;) ~amanda

hey girlies.... eliina, i am all for your apartment ideas. i'm really excited about the church rummage sales and stuff they always have in the fall. i bought a really cool little vase today at a flea market.... it looks like hand-blown glass and it's milky-clear with streaks of orange and light blue. $5! i was happy. the day went downhill from there, though, because i'm trying to plan my travel after my program ends. my mom is coming and we're travelling for a week. it's hard enough to plan my OWN stuff, without trying to figure out where she might want to go to. and it's one thing to find a place for ME to crash, but it's much harder to find someplace for two. and she's not a student, so rates for everything are so much more expensive, and it's all just silly the way this is SO hard, but i can't seem to plan this at all, and i have finals and i'm leaving in three days, and i have people to see and stuff to do and it's just impossible right now. yeah, i'm stressing. well, that's about it. everything should be wonderful, i'm just goin' nuts. hope all's well with you guys...love,linz

Okay, so I've been thinking about our apartment for next year, which we should name, and I've got a million fun ideas. Of course, they're all written down in my notebook which is in another room (I'm in the library right now). One of them involves a chicken-wire wall sculpture, which could be contained to my room if no one else likes it, having us pose for a cheesy family-style portrait and hanging it on the wall, making our living room friendly for campers and wandering friends, having a lovely bookshelf in the living room, lots of baking supplies so we can have muffins and strawberry shortcake, a grill so we can grill at the park next to the Evanston Arts Center around the corner and other stuff. But I should be studying now, not thinking about silly fun ideas. Later babes, eliina

lalala, just thought i'd write something here. woohoo! lindsay's online! i'm talking to linz, lalalala. no news here. just watched the simpsons, now i gotta do some reading. life here is ... uneventful. i'm gonna be in boston this summer, but i think you all already know that. in boston not getting paid! yeah! but it's worth it. lalala, the thing about settling back to someplace familiar is that there just isn't much to tell stories about. but that's okay. hope you're all well. back to reading my chinese classic (it has 5 volumes and 80 chapters! can you believe it? i'm not reading the whole thing). hasta las vista, babies ... tara
