*** For the record I now recognize that I'm crossed out as a feature of html. you know, visited links and such. Whoosh. I thought the illuminati had placed me on their "list" again. Maybe the "Community Memorial Hospital" (which by the way implies that the community is dead) actually did diagnose me correctly, after all the chest pains are still here today and motrin makes them go away. Hooray,
pleurisy! And for the record, I couldn't have died. For one, it hasn't been proven yet whether or not I'm immortal. It's possible you see. And two, it was PLEURISY. You just don't die from that. In other news today's WRCU meeting to assauge our fears did pretty much the opposite. And I love you mp3.com.

*** Who are you and why did you cross me out?

*** Yeah, msn sucks. Really really sucks. I didn't want images of people staring out of windows above the point of impact and people jumping to their death to be my lasting memory after a very long night. But there they are. And for anyone aware that I went to the emergency room at the tail end of the party, it wasn't the ticker, it was just some inflammation of something or other. In any event, the cure hurt more than the problem for a time, but I'm all good. Thus closes another week.

*** Well, it's been a very weird few days.

The short verions: WRCU is facing possible shut-down or severe re-toolling due to a moronic alumni with a lot of money who is so out of touch it defies reality. What gave him the idea? The webpage. Well, at least the version I designed. And my quote is one of his sticking points. Grr. And the quote: "It's dead, Jim. Again. We aren't on a regular schedule, and if and when we're on, it's only on the Internet. Helpful, eh?" Apparently this is depressing an embarrassing for Colgate, becuase our transmitter broke, and they couldn't find the problem to fix it. What a fucking idiot. Basically, the station was in flux. the transmittor would be fixed fior a day, then another tube would pop. While this is a bad thing, it's far from within our control. We had just set up a shoutcast server for the first time, and DJs, being the finicky bitches that they are, would not consistently show up to just broadcast on the internet. Fortunately, our adviser, who also clearly doesn't know what's he's talking about while "defending" us, also expressed disapointment over my quote. He was on sabbatical. He never knew what was going on. He is an idiot. This is becoming less of a short version and more of a rant, so now I stop. I forgot to mention I'm slept for effectively 1.5 hours in the last 39.

My uncle died today. I had just been saying that no more relatives would be dying for awhile, what with all the eldest gone, but I guess not. So, in three months: one uncle and one grandparent. Go back three months before that, one grandparent and one uncle resurfacing from the dead to announce that he will be dead shortly. And go back a year and another grandparent. And I've handled all of them really well, or at least not badly - it's just that everyone else had been mourning those lost in the attacks, so it comes as a surprise for someone to die unrelated to them.

And leadership has problems, as always. It will never cease to amaze me how some people will evade logic on all levels because they feel themselves infallible. And really, everyone needs to reassess their harsh-o-meters, because I tend not to be harsh, dammit.

Oh yeah, and I still watch CNN too much. Since when was it constitutional to arrest material witnesses? And then there's that whole blank check for war thing. Dandy. At least every elected offcial isn't into knee-jerk reactions, because that would be just plain disappointing if they were.

*** Do you know what? I can't really formulate a thought. I just deleted a big honkin' paragraph about how I feel or should feel or might feel, but it just doesn't convey it right. I've talked about it with people, and I'll talk about it with anyone who's interested, but I just can't type it one-sided.

The quick version:

I'm not all that upset, and I can't figure out why.

I have and will most likely always, dislike the media. Although I suppose their skill in rephasing the same information in 15 different ways deserves some sort of credit.

Archbishops are not commentators, and therefore should never, ever be treated as such.

Islam is not evil, but people who are Islamic can be. Just as Christians can do evil, and Jews can be evil, and athiests can be evil. If you want to misinterpret things, you can do anything.

The invocation of Article 5 worries me. It reminds me a little too much of the system of alliances that caused two world wars. And I find Bush's comments a lot less pacifying, and lot more worisome than many others seem to.

And I read the following today and it made me think:

The Seventh Day
The Book of Genesis

by Max Dizdar
Translated by Anne Pennigton

...and I saw the water eating away the earth
The sun drinking the water
The earth belching out fire
I saw beast attacking beast
Man spilling man's blood
I saw evil deeds on all sides
I saw the evil thou didst create
For I had tasted of the fruit of the tree of knowledge
I saw for my eyes were opened
And I cried out
It is not good It is not good It is not
This thy earth
Is only good for the stones...

And as this really is far beyond legal copyright protection (and I suppose the following doesn't even really mitigate it) - here's the bibliographical info:
"Why Bosnia?" edited by Rabia Ali & Lawrence Lifschultz. Panphleteer's Press. Stony Creek, CT. 1993. pg 129.

Do I hate the world and expect nothing good to come from it? No. But I am afraid of what has come from it, and what will come from it.

*** Fate sucks. I mean it really, really sucks. I was just offered a trip to the CMJ music festival. that is a small dream come true. I love college radio, both the atmosphere and the music...but it's also the first home football game. And I can't miss that. I already used up my leeway for my term as director and that's probably a bit beyond it. So, I think I'm going to have to turn it down. But at least I can wait till tomorrow to do it. So, I can pretend for a bit.

*** I'm only really truly happy if I'm busy. It's kind of odd. Well, maybe not odd, but at least infused thoroughly with irony. See, I like this thing - this blog thing. I like postin' I like readin' I like codin' and other things that can have their soft g replaced with an apostrophe. But, the busier I am (and if you remember the happier I am) the less I'm here. As much as the internet is fun, full of humor and intelligince (or at least humorous and intelligent people behind parts of it), it isn't really truly good. I'd trade a few thousand hours at a computer for one half-way decent sunset. And that's just my opening offer. If someone truly was goig to barter with me, I'd probably be willing to give up more. (But you didn't here that from me).

I've just spent five hours reading on a variety of geologic topics, many of which violate my two prefix limit (especially paleobiogeochemistry - yeesh), and even though it wasn't a sunset, it was just good. Knowledge, even particularly useless knowledge just gives one a sense of power. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be lifting any volkswagon beetles anytime soon, but I feel power nonetheless. Each night I just want to run. I don't want to stop moving, thinking, living. For no apparent reason I feel like I'm on borowed time, and to justify the high interest rate I need to use it more efficiently - be it through thought or movement or movement of thought or thoughts about movement etc.

As you may remember, I signed on for a play, and I am pumped. I knew nothing of the play prior to auditioning, just received a lot of encouragement from my friend (and conveintly enough director) Larry, so I went for it. I thought my role was going to superfluous. that I was going to just be mute and do nothing, but no. the character has such immense depth despite not saying anything. I already see the emotion I will have to put into the role and I am both excited and frightened. Larry knows about me being pigeonholed. He knows I often am not taken seriously, and this role is serious. For once, I don't just think, I know I'm up to it. I'm up to the actual part, and I'm up to actually conserving my time to get decent (hell, enough decent, for once good) grades at the same time.

But (and I still can't figure our why) the knowledge beckons again, and I've sat still for too long. If nothing else I need to jump up and down for a bit.

*** Well, I've sealed my fate for this semester. I tried out for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and was cast. I missed being in plays (it had been three years since a non 30 second one). So, I'm Chief Bromden. Now I just need to come off as not a racist. Ah, well. I'm also tired, if you couldn't tell.

*** I dislike accidental hypocrisy. especially when I'm the one doing it. Hey, remember
this? Well, I'm currently living my one sentence criticism. So, it really is funny how things work out. And I really probably don't need to be this cryptic, but you can infer the right stuff without sweating the details. I know that the next few days I'll be discussing the details far more than I want to.
