Well, I haven't been very good about keeping up my weblog, but then, I have had a very intense couple of weeks. My car was pronouced dead, my cat somehow broke her hip (was hit by a car?) and my wife and I managed to contract a virus that leaves you puking for eight hours straight. Today, we went to Watchusset mountain to do some hiking and I was depressingly out of shape. School ending has been incredibly busy and emotional, since this is my last year in Needham. Tech Camp however is going really well. I have a great presentation in store for the tech campers on wednesday. I will be going out of needham with a bang, that's for sure!

So the insurance company is going to give me over four thousand dollars for my car. That's cool because there is no way I could have ever sold it for that. Of course, now I have to buy a car. Or then again, why buy a car when I could buy another computer? I need a good laptop for my new job. I really don't know how my wife puts up with me.

Stratego, now there's a game! I just bought it for my five year old son. He is really into it already. I played two games with him then my wife played two games, and he wants to keep going. I remember playing it when I was a kid. Stategy games are most interesting to me. I think this is because they are often about finding patterns. I love developing a plan and then trying to see it through.

My wife and I went and saw the new version of Hamlet recently. It takes place in modern New York, yet the language has not been modernized. This is close to being a really bad idea, but they managed to pull it off. The acting was really quite good and the language really came alive for me. I have always like Ethan Hawke, ever since I first saw him in Dead Poets Society. What I really liked about this rendition of Hamlet was the was they explored the film medium. They incorporated a lot of video, shots of actors looking at video, and refections of the actors. They also used imagery from lots of time periods and cultures, which made the strange concept of combining a modern setting with Shakespearian language part of the eclecticism of the whole movie. My wife didn't like the shots in the Blockbuster video store, because it seemed too much like blatent advertising to her. I liked the scene though. "To be or not to be..." set against a hanging sign with the blockbuster slogan, "go home happy," just seemed too funny to me. It is these kinds of contrasts that make this weird movie shakespearian. I wonder what Shakespear would have thought of it.

It is truly amazing how a boring day can wear you out. I don't think I did one interesting thing today - except go to J.P. Licks for icecream after dinner. That was yummy. I did meet a woman who went to the school where I teach as a student. She was there before I worked there, and it was fun talking about all the old-fart teachers she had. Most of them are gone. Soon I will be gone too. On to a different school. This is a tough transition in a lot of ways. In other ways it seems so natural. I hope I will be able to get really into my new school and my new job. I hope it won't be so boring as my current one. Don't get me wrong, I like the school I am at and a lot of people are really great, but I have been there for eight years and I feel like I have been through the wars. I have fought my battles, and I have won the ones that were winable, and lost the rest. Now there is nothing left for me to do except drag on. I could have stayed there, and I am sure I could find something to interest me, but really I think leaving will be the best thing.
