peer-pressured bio:

Zannah is a small, robotic San Fransisco-based marketing team which currently resides in the beautiful city of Seattle. She is hopelessly addicted to both Q-Zar, VGL's Tesla Battletech VR, and Dance Dance Revolution (arcade). She can also often be found playing arcade fighting games such as Marvel vs. Capcom or (her favourite) Soul Edge. She reads over 30 comic book titles on a regular basis, and spends far too much money on music, dvds, and other shiny things.

Zannah aspires to be an anime character when she grows up.

have a site suggestion? email it in!

(no ninjas to see here... move along!)

My heart goes out to everyone, because I feel no one was really untouched by the tragedy in New York.

I know many people are suggesting donations to the Red Cross and giving blood as a way to reach out, but I would also suggest that you - please - reach out to your loved ones often and let them know how much you love them. Implication of love is not enough. Tell them.

/usr/bin/girl will now attempt to return to "normal" linkage, though it certainly does not mean we have forgotten. [Feel free to discuss in the forums]

I know several of my immediate friends will love this link. If you are looking for a way to distract yourself, or just get away from the news for a time, check out this Shockwave game called Project 156. This game is similar to a game called Cabeem or Mahki in that you remove blocks that are grouped together to try to clear the board. However, in this version, as you remove the blocks, they also slide to the right, allowing for (in my opinion) high scores. Try it out; a little distraction might be good for you.

(While it tries to encourage you to register, you do not have to do so to play this game!)

If you find yourself curious about other big buildings and structures, you might check out PBS' site called Building Big, which offers a plethora of information and trivia on the world's greatest architectural wonders. It not only discusses buildings (and domes) but also bridges, tunnels, and dams.

While not exactly the robot I would hope to become, one man has become a sort of human cyborg by attaching a lot of portable devices to himself and allowing the world to see through his eyes.

<· · ·> ./talk(5)
First we heard about smells coming from our monitors and television, now they're talking about smells in the movie theatres. Of course, the first thing they tried it out on was a soft drink commercial. Though there are logistical problems (such as how to clear a scent out of a theatre quickly), we may eventually be smelling flowers and baking cakes from our movie screens.

(Disney's California Adventure has a ride that already incorporates a limited amount of smell-technology. As we flew over an "orange grove" (on a screen) we could actually smell oranges in the breeze.)

I didn't get a chance to look at this until right now, but (also from readers in the ./talkboxes) this is a beautiful thread with pictures of support around the world.

<· · ·> ./talk(4)
There are a lot of rumours flying around the 'net right now (Nostradomus' "prophecy", the date of the attacks, etc). A friend of mine debunked some of those on her site this morning.

<· · ·> ./talk(2)
Also, if you're wondering what happened to all those people that were diverted to Canada, Views of Venus discusses a little bit of what's going on there, since it hasn't been covered much in the news. (Thanks to CG in the ./talkbox for this link).

<· · ·> ./talk(3)
For those in Seattle, this week got even worse; on Wednesday afternoon, a small plane carrying 16 UW Husky fans on a football dream vacation, crashed while returning from a trip to the Mayan ruins. There were no survivors. This was heartbreaking news in the wake of an already massive tragedy.

Furthermore, it turns out I actually knew someone on the flight; one of my juniour high school teachers had been aboard. (See a short remembrance of each of the 16 passengers here).

I am so tired of bad news. . . Is there any light at the end of this tunnel?

<· · ·> ./talk(1)
The Seattle Times also ran an article on how trying to go about normal business, laugh a little, or smile a little, can help you through this tragedy.

<· · ·> ./talk(2)
In everything, it's the personal accounts of people that escaped the building that affect me the most. In the story I linked here, there are a few first-hand accounts, including the story of a blind man whose dog wouldn't leave his side (even though the man released him), and a woman who made it out only to get partially buried in falling rubble, but who eventually managed to dig her way out.

Obviously, everyone has heard about the New York tragedy.

I haven't posted much about the events, nor do I really plan to. There's been far more commentary on the 'net covering anything I might have said, and then some. If you're still looking for coverage and things to read, I suggest swinging by Jish.nu or my sister's site, as both of them had excellent coverage of yesterday's events.

I spent most of my day watching the news on television, discussing the events with friends on IRC, and reading the news on the web.

We are waiting to hear word on some friends of the James' family who were in the Pentagon, in the area that it was hit.

I don't think anyone is really untouched by this.

While I feel that linkage is sort of trivial right now, I do also feel like I need something to take my mind off of this, so you may see regular links up a little later today.

If you haven't seen the new generation of Aibo dogs, you need to go right now and check them out. Latte and Macaron are bubbly and cute, and will be almost half the price of the current Aibos, making them even more affordable (in a relative sense) at $850. They're not available until October, but I am already dying for one. (One day, I will have an Aibo! Yes! I will! Especially if they keep coming down in price!)

Attack of the Shark Lobby. Sharks have a PR problem, and Slate has come to the rescue with this spin on actual shark activity. Come on, sharks don't kill people! Swimming kills people!

I was positive I'd linked to this before, because I'd taken this test previously. But when I checked in the archives, I couldn't find it anywhere. My apologies if I have linked it before and just couldn't find it.

It's old, but I didn't see it until this weekend: everything I needed to know, I learned from first person shooters. (I actually don't ever play first person shooters because they make me dizzy. But, I've watched enough of them to know that this is all true! Really!)

I loaded up the news this morning to read about a story from Saturday: Boy fatally shot while shooting targets with father. The story linked here is short, but basically, the father "lost track" of his 10 year old son when he (the father) stopped to reload his gun. While he reloaded, his son was setting up new targets. Upon finishing his reload, the father assumed his son had returned, and began to shoot. He shot his son, who was still over by the targets. The child was shot in the chest and pronounced dead by the time he got to the hospital.

This story fills me with utter horror, not to mention anger. How could the father not have seen his son over by the targets? And, even if he hadn't, obviously the child was not standing next to him. You shouldn't shoot at the targets your child was supposed to be setting up without knowing where your child is, for goodness sake.

I think only the James will get a kick out of this: a British chess grandmaster thinks Bobby Fischer is playing chess anonymously online. (Either that, or the guy was just a little upset that he was "crushed" in his matches versus his anonymous opponent). Still, the idea of the elusive Bobby Fischer playing chess anonymously on the Internet is pretty amusing.

In an effort to provide more ninja goodness, I bring to your attention some Commercial Ninja Services, which includes Ninja Care for Lawns.

Maybe I should offer some ninja services. Hmm...

Also not to be missed: 12 tricks of TV ninjas. Or, how to be stylin' ninja in just 12 moves.

(Not that I know any shirt ninjas. Or anything like that.)

I need some help identifying music from what is supposedly a Coca-Cola commercial. I downloaded this mp3 (2.5 megs) the other day. It is supposedly a karaoke version of a Coke commercial. I like the music, but have never heard a Coke commercial like this. Upon further listening (the backup vocals are still in the song), it appears it might be a Japanese (?) Coke commercial. Does anyone know where I might find out more about this?

<· · ·> ./talk(6)
Speaking of pixelled goodness, someone put together a pixelly video based on a Daft Punk song. (At least, I'm assuming it's a Daft Punk song. I had never heard it before, but that's what the listing says).

I think it's a little late in the year for new sunglasses, but check out Oakley's new Over the Top sunglasses. They look futuristic, but I can't help wondering if people won't wear them simply because it'll flatten out your hair.

You, like me, may be rejoicing in the happiness that is Friday and the beginning of the weekend. If you're looking for ways to make the day go a little faster, drop by Gone to Lunch, a site which has a ton of Flash puzzles and games. They have classics, such as memory, tetris, minesweeper, and battleships, as well as adaptations of the simpsons, pokemon, pacman, and more. I spent a lot of time here blowing up battleships!

One more Flash goodie for you today: Qrime. I spent far too much time just watching the little guys run around before I figured out that there was more to the site than just the first page. Qrime explores the role of violence in society, via neat Flash animations. Not quite as interactive as pixelsurgeon, but this site was just what I needed this morning as I sat, blinking at my monitor and trying to stay awake.

Here are two random pictures I took last night after being prompted for new pictures in IRC. Normally I wouldn't link them here, but we're running an experiment today. Let me know what you think. (The thumbnails don't show the whole picture, by the way; I just had to crop them to make the thumbnails the right size).

Are you looking for some Flash goodness to help you get through the week? Look no further! Pixelsurgeon is a gorgeous pixel-pushing site full of design stuf and a game called Ninjagirl 2 (remember the first one from netbaby?) Fun abounds within, but alas, Netscape users cannot visit the site, for it is IE only. I had to use another computer to visit the site, since my Mac always freezes whenever IE starts. Still, I felt it was definitely worth the time; it's my must see for the week.

Although I'm not an avid Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I do enjoy watching it from time to time. I still can't get the image of that old 80's movie version of it out of my head. I was not aware until this morning that Joss Whedon was responsible for the movie script, too. You can learn this and other fascinating tidbits in this online interview with him. Even if you're not a fan of Joss, he gives a good interview.
