All I Wanted to Do Was Get AwayI don't trip too much. I mean, get away all that much. I like the City, I would rather roam these streets than others unfamiliar, yet attactive in some strange way. The more I see other towns, the more I appreciate San Francisco.
This adventure starts in San Diego, way far South of San Francisco, near the border of Mexico. It's a lovely place, always sunny, so I heard, and quite a little place to visit. Not one to love the fog in SF all that much, I talk to a friend about going away for the weekend, and five minutes later, the email alert signifies that our tickets are now confirmed. We're excited, and we are blabbering mindlessly over how much fun it will be. Don't get me wrong, this isn't the set up for something like "It was going to be great. Too bad it sucked." Far from it. Actually I had a lot of fun with my Host with the Most, Mister Will "Bouncy Bouncy" Palarca.
I suppose I can now tell you about everything we did, but I won't. There was much more to this trip than getting out of SF.
I have to admit, as of late, I have been loathe to go hang out with friends because being Miss Independent and Not Really Feelin' Like Digging Doing Someone Else's Shit is tough. I turned down a few trips because it felt like it would be funky, or that I wouldn't want to deal with some of the B.S. that would go on. Let's go here, let's go there, let's leave Char alone to be a snot because she doesn't want to hang out with us. Truth be told, and I have several sources who will testify to this: I can be quite a snot when the moment calls for it. I am the traveling sort who likes to be away from the crowds, wander around with purposiveness, and in general soak up conversation and down time, which I have so little of these days. I went to San Diego with this in mind, but I wound up going deep in the heart of the crowds. Suffice it to say, I entered Snot Mode quickly, and without little hesitation.
I had a lot of time to chop it up with Big Will and we talked about a lot of the stuff that I dig on. Goals. Graduating. Shopping. Shoes. God. Ikea. Sports. Books to read. Writing. All of that fun stuff. It's a trip because I didn't really expect to get deep into it, but when it kicks in, it's a nice groove and you can go for hours. We spent a lot of time in the car hopping from place to place. (Mission Valley? Yuck. Fashion Valley? Rules.) And every now and then up would pop a question, and we would go on from there. It's the kind of thing I guess happens during road trips, but it wasn't stupid shit like most road trips turn out to be.
At any rate, talking about stuff is something that not a lot of my friends do these days. Discussing things, even things out of our grasp and reach. It's stuff we just don't do. I don't know why. Is it bcause we are too afraid of what we will say? Are we too afraid of voicing our opinions because we have so much to lose? I don't know folks, but conversatin' is a lost art form. We're so used to TV, living our "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" quick answer lives that taking the time to break things down and talk about it with other people. People you know, or even don't know. It's frustrating.
Maybe because I'm a chickadee and that I like to talk about stuff, and there are people (menfolks) who don't like to talk about things. Why bother? I suppose kinda atttitude. I can respect that, but sometimes it's those kind of people you really want to get to know most of all because the mind is a vast thing. Beats me.
So here go me and Will choppin' it up, talking about everything, and when you talk about things, it has a strange way of crystallizing things that you never thought would be possible. You should tape yourself. I bet you don't even know half the things you yammer out of your trap. It's amazing to hear yourself, because so many people don't even know what they sound like. But back to choppin' it up. When you talk about things, it's a lot like Big Jesus said, "The Word made Flesh." Bam. There is it. The word you just said, the thoughts you had in yo' nugget are now real. Can you imagine that? I bet you're thinking, wtf, girl. You think too much. The honest answer? Yes I do, but it is these things that keep me alive on some days. Think on it, speak on it and it will be. The power of conversatin'. Can you dig that?
When I left, I felt a certain sadness that our conversations had to end. We had a lot of time to get to reknow each other since it had been some time that we actually sat down and talked. But I am happy to say that I did learn a lot about myself during that trip. Speakin' on the things that I believe to be true and self-evident made me believe them even more. And if there were things that Will would talk about, I would take that into consideration and think on that too, maybe later to speak on it and you see my point.
Take the time to talk to your friends. Your loved ones. Them people in the street. Listen to them and learn. Conversate with others and somehow, you tend to find yourself. Even in a city that is not your own.
